1 comments about Wild in the City: A Guide to Portland's Natural Areas.
- I live in Portland and like many people don't get out as often as I should. I typically spend my time in and around the city. Wild in the City allows me to take advantage of what the Rose City offers, whether it tame or wild. There are some great ideas for day trips and a ton of interesting facts that keep me reading, even if I don't have the time to experience them all. On the stuff that I've done in the book it's all accurate. There's a ton of great information in this book and anyone who lives in Portland, or is interested in what Portland has to offer, should read this book. Do yourself one better. Buy it. You'll be glad you did once you're looking for something to do on a weekend when you didn't plan on something.

2 comments about Ghosts of the Pioneers: A Family Search for the Independent Oregon Colony of 1844.
- This is a wonderful intermixing of a contemporary family and a historical account of a journey west following the trail of the early settlers as they traced the path of the 1840 wagon trail to Oregon. It fully recognizes the tragedies and challenges of the early settlers while sharing the humorous adventurous of the struggling efforts of the author's own family. A very good read!
- This book manages to smoothly move along several tracks. The historical track captures vividly the amazing
risks taken by families during that brief period of western expansion before the golden spike changed it
forever. The contemporary journey with Braden's family is full of hilarious observations of various things and people found along what's left of the Oregon Trail. The stops in what pass for "campgrounds" and the characters
encountered there made me put down the book to laugh. The third track, which was perhaps the most compelling, was the author's attempt at chasing down and describing some aspect of the American character that still permeates modern living, an ongoing search for deeper resonances than appear on the surface. I was struck by how he managed to conjure up intimations of this in me. Little shadows of epihanies hiding between
the words in this casually told but utterly engrossing tale.

3 comments about 100 Hikes/Travel Guide: Oregon Coast & Coast Range.
- I have used extensively this book for traveling at the south oregon coast. The directions to the trail heads are very clear, the maps are well done and the hike descriptions are first rate. Sullivan is a wonderful writer. His other hiking books are also very well done. I recommend any book that he has written. His hiking books are the best that I have ever seen.

- Hi -- This is the author, William Sullivan. I've completely updated this 100 Hikes guide to Oregon's Coast, with a dozen new or radically changed hikes, new photos, new maps, and up-to-date info. The new "100 Hikes/Travel Guide: Oregon Coast & Coast Range, 2nd Edition" is available in April, 2002 (ISBN #096778302X). I'm giving slide shows about the new book throughout Oregon -- for dates and times, please check my Web site at www.oregonhiking.com.

1 comments about Day Hikes from Oregon Campgrounds.
- A must have if you live in or close enough (like me) to Oregon to camp there, and you insist that your campground has a hiking trail, like I do! I found a wealth of information on where to camp and hike in my neighboring state, and even though I haven't had time to go camping yet, I have used this to find hiking trails to explore. Many nice, enticing photos throughout the book, and decriptions of the wildlife and scenery at the campgrounds and hikes, all nessesary information about the campgrounds and hikes are given, such as how many tent sites are available (I was surprised to see one campground had only one tent site!) and how long the hiking trails are. If you need a guide for Oregon on camping and/or hiking, I think this is the book you've been looking for.

3 comments about Insiders' Guide to Portland, Oregon: Including the Metro Area and Vancouver, Washington (Insiders' Guides).
- Whether you live in Portland or are visiting for an extended time or have just moved, this is an excellent guide to the Rose City. Everything from shopping, restaurants, recreation, sites of interest, etc. You name it, this book covers it. Want to find a new place to go out to dinner? Look here. Want to figure out where to take a visiting friend from out of town? Look here. This is an excellent guide to all aspects of living, working, and playing in Portland. The one shortcoming this book has is that it has very limited coverage of the surrounding metro area. If it's not in Portland, it's probably not in this book.
- I recently visited Portland for the Fourth of July weekend and this book along with {Best Places Portland} were my constant companion. Extensive information regarding EVERYTHING from Shopping, Restaurants, Lodging to detailed information on each neighborhood.
If you are looking to visit Portland and need a Visitor Guide, Grab your highlighter! and get a map. I carried this one with me constantly. The only flaw I could find in this one is that it didn't seperate the restaurants by Meal Type ie; Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Respectfully Reviewed
- In a nice pleasant format this guide delivers what it promises, describes what's to be seen, where to go, what to expect, and helps you get around in Portland. Should be a memorable trip. Can't wait.

2 comments about Paddling Oregon.
- Paddling Oregon -along with Soggy Sneakers- are the two definative guide books about Oregon boating.
Paddling Oregon has a well-organized desciption of multiple runs of 92 different rivers. Included in each overview is information about the character, location, gradient, class and skill level and a list of appropriate craft for the run. Information about potential shuttle sources is also included. Paddling Oregon is a comfortable format and easy-to-read narrative which provides great details and provides a good feel for the river. The one criticism I have is the book fails to provide useful maps for use on the river.
- I found that this book lacked organization by geographical region of Oregon. It has a good sized map of Oregon in the front with the various trips represented as a dot with a number in it. There are no city or county indications on the map. If you wanted to look for trips in Bend, you'd be guessing what trips are there. There are regional maps in the back, but I don't think there is an index into them. You just have to hunt around. I was thinking of kayaking in Bend on the stretch of the Deschutes from Wiki Up reservoir to Bend, the first easy section, which stops at the falls about 8 miles downstream. It shows the stretch on one map as easy but no mention is made of how to get there or what to expect.
It has a rather large index to its credit.

2 comments about Pacific Northwest: A Photographic Tour (Highsmith, Carol M., Photographic Tour.).
- Like wow! When my parents were looking at this book and hoping to get an idea of the Pacific Northwest, I didn't know what all the oohs and ahs were all about. But after taking a gander at the many gorgeous pictures depicting the natural, cultural and historic wonders of this diverse region -- safely under the blanket with a flashlight -- I can see why they liked it so much. Containing almost none of the preciousness one often sees in coffee table books, nor the high flown gas one sometimes finds in other works devoted to American regions, nor the sappiness of the normal trade book intended for use by armchair travelers, Mr. Landphair and Ms. Highsmith's work really makes you want to visit the Northwest and soak up the sights. The captions are eloquent without being overly long, and the photos are artistic without being 'artsy.' The printing itself is a work of art. I would unreservedly recommend this to anyone either of my own age group or older. Awesome! Move over Playstation 2!
- I bought this book because I live in the Pacific Northwest and I wanted a memento of my area in case I ever move away. There are excellent large photos of areas I have seen with my own eyes, such as Portland Oregon with Mt Hood in the background, the Japanese Gardens in Portland, Oregon beaches, Multnomah Falls and Vista House's view, both along the Columbia River Gorge, an inside picture of Timberline Lodge, Stonehenge, which is a 10 minute drive from my home, the Riverfront park in Spokane and the HUGE Radio Flyer wagon slide that is there, Mt Saint Helens, to name a few. Also there are pictures of places I haven't seen yet that I would like to see, in California, and Vancouver BC and Oregon's Crater Lake that is on the cover as well as in the book. Includes some history and historical photos in the beginning of the book. If you don't live in this area this book may inspire you to visit.
