  1. If you are planning a climbing trip to Oregon this Rock Climbing Guide is a must. The routes of Smith Rock are worth the price alone. This guide is for beginning and intermediate climbers (5.0 to 5.10a). The route descriptions, pictures, and diagrams are awesome. Climb some of the states most beautiful locations. This book is a great guide and instrutor.

  2. This book is perfect for climbers who only need descriptions of routes 5.10a and under. (The author includes highly rated 5.10b/c routes, as well.) It gets discouraging looking at books where I have to flag the few pages that refer to climbs I can do. This book is reasonably priced and full of great pictures, information, and climbs I can do. What more could I want in a guide?

  1. I have used extensively this book for traveling at the south oregon coast. The directions to the trail heads are very clear, the maps are well done and the hike descriptions are first rate. Sullivan is a wonderful writer. His other hiking books are also very well done. I recommend any book that he has written. His hiking books are the best that I have ever seen.

  3. Hi -- This is the author, William Sullivan. I've completely updated this 100 Hikes guide to Oregon's Coast, with a dozen new or radically changed hikes, new photos, new maps, and up-to-date info. The new "100 Hikes/Travel Guide: Oregon Coast & Coast Range, 2nd Edition" is available in April, 2002 (ISBN #096778302X). I'm giving slide shows about the new book throughout Oregon -- for dates and times, please check my Web site at www.oregonhiking.com.

  1. Romance of Waterfalls is a unique book on the magnificent waterfalls within day-trip range of Portland, Oregon. The 252 page work combines the best of a hiking book, coffee table book, nature book, art book, and a work of poetry and literature. For each of its 100 featured waterfalls, it provides a photograph-like pencil drawing, complete directions, time and distance, map, description, nearby attractions, hazards, accessibility to the physically challenged, view and kissing spots, picnic areas, restrooms, historical trivia, and a poem. Introductory and reference sections offer advice on weather, children, pets, and safety, and information on local wildlife and plants, the Chinook language, and phone numbers for reservations, information, and emergencies. It contains 165 illustrations and 111 poems, all original works by the authors. This one of a kind book can be enjoyed year around by all families, couples, and individuals, it should be in the library of every resident and visitor to the Pacific Northwest.

  1. This was one of the worst purchases I have ever made. If I had looked at it in a bookstore, I never would have bought it. It is nothing more than a list, with a few scarce details of each campground. Granted, it lists every campground. But there is no way to distinguish betwen the very good and the very terrible, the details are so minimal. I am not always a fan of the review systems other books use, but at least most of them tell you why they like or dislike a location, and you can weigh those opinions in your decision of where to camp. This book tells you virtually nothing. I have looked up campgrounds I know very well. Not only do I not recognize them based on the descriptions, I can not find any reasons that I would choose them over any other campground. Save your money! Buy something else, ANYTHING else.

  2. Don't buy this if you are looking for a tour book. This is a campground guide. The guide includes 471 Free Campgrounds. If you want to know where to see the sights...Don't buy this. But if you want to know where you can park your R.V. or put up a tent...then this is the book for you. Simple maps, easy to read.

  1. This is a useful little guidebook, rating segments of the Timberline Trail and showing an elevation profile for each segment. Nice for those of us who prefer to select our trail segments with more downs than ups when possible! Each segment has a concise summary of what you can expect to find in terms of scenery and river crossings (not to be taken lightly on Mt Hood; these aren't little babbling mountain brooks, they're raging torrents that can roll hundred pound boulders with ease). For those who are doing car shuttles, each trail is also described for clockwise and for counterclockwise hiking (relative to the entire circle of the mountain). This also creates the only disadvantage to the book, that is, it's twice as long as it needs to be due to repeating the same information in reverse sequence. Backpackers would do well to photocopy only the relevant portion and leave the book at home. The authors also suggest the preferred direction for each trail segment, which is useful. This book is worth the price.
