1. I ran a bed and breakfast outside the city for ten years, and this was the best guide to Chattanooga. My guests earmarked it and took it on their travels. It was easy to read, well referenced and had tons of helpful information. It would get a five star rating but it is out of date. We need a new one desparately! Chattanooga has a new Southside, a great farmers market and it is sad that they are not listed.

1. Compiled, edited and Annotated by Mary J. Straw Cook, Immortal Summer: A Victorian Woman's Travels In The Southwest is a collection of letters and black-and-white photographs by Amelia Hollenback, a Victorian woman who had the opportunity to see 1897 America with her own eyes. With extensive contextual annotation, Immortal Summer is a vivid, superbly organized and presented primary source which takes in what American life, land and people were really like more than a century ago. One curious note: Author and historian Mary Cook lives in Santa Fe in the very house that Amelia Hollenback commissioned John Gaw Meem to build in 1932!



2. I have not yet read this book, I have only just ordered it, but I am so excited to read it because currently I am the coordinator of the Hollenback Community Garden in Brooklyn New York. Our garden is on the former site of the Hollenback Mansion where Amelia grew up, which burned down in 1979.

1. This fascinating little book is part of the Images of America series, and is a pictorial peek into the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at Starved Rock State Park, and at other locations along the Illinois and Michigan Canal, in north-central Illinois, in the 1930s. Each chapter has a small introduction, followed by a selection of wonderful old pictures, which give you a peek into another time.

   The first chapter is a very nice collection of fourteen vintage pictures (1905-1955) showing Starved Rock as it looked in the past. The next three chapters contain pictures from CCC companies 614, 2601 and 1609. The fifth chapter has thirteen wonderful pictures showing the I&M Canal in operation. Chapter six shows the CCC's work in creating the I&M Canal Parkway, while chapter seven shows people using the CCC's buildings and works, and chapter eight shows pictures of CCC building and works still in use today.

   Overall I found this to be a nice little book. The fact that it is merely a collection of pictures might limit its interest to people who are already familiar with Starved Rock and the I&M Canal. But, if you are interest in them, then you will enjoy seeing this book.

1. this book was extremely useful in planning our trip to puerto vallarta and the area around there. it had info on when and where to go, what the individual surf spots were like, recommendations on accommodation and more. so far, this is the most detailed surfing guide for northern mexico i have found on the market.



2. awesome guidebook for surfing northern mexico. it detailed roughly 12 surf spots around mazatlan where we were. however it also described spots around puerto vallarta, san blas, sayulita, etc. Advice is given for each spot such as the type of break, when it works best, level of localism, directions, tides, etc. all in all it's a great buy for any surfer planning a trip to mex.

1. The author covers interesting places in most of the Western states, with the noteable exception of Utah. After spending the past 2 weeks in Utah, exploring caves, petroglyphs, and cliff dwellings of the Anazazi and Fremont Indians, I referred to the book to see if any of the places I visited were mentioned. I was surprised to see that the entire state of Utah was ignored.



2. I loved this book. I was excited to read the different explanations about these strange things found in nature. It is even more interesting after you have seen some of these places for yourself. I think that the photos in the book added a lot to my understanding. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in natural mysteries!
