1 comments about Before the Roads Were Paved Living with the Navajos at Canyon de Chelly (1950-1952).
  1. A rare glimpse of life among the Navajo Indians of fifty two years ago as seen by a young government wife who is also an anthropologist.

It is a delightful account of the Navajos she met, the school children she taught, the medicine men and the traders she encountered. And of the events she and her husband, a government range ecologist and cowboy participated in. Rodeos, voter registrations, cattle brandings and Navajo ceremonies and rides up Canyon de Chelly on horseback or in a government jeep.

Often she and her husband were the only white people present at these ocassions.

The book also has a favoraable review by Tony Hillerman on the publisher's website...

1 comments about Seattle (Citylife Pictorial Guide).
  1. The layout of photography and text I feel was impecible. The striking pictures presented an alluring appeal. I have travelled to Seattle and I felt it was quite complete. It not only covers the City of Seattle but also the area around Seattle such as Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier Parks which are really a treat to see.

2 comments about Adirondack High: Images of America's First Wilderness.
  1. I didn't read much of the test, but the pctures were spectacular. They are on a par with some other photographers.
Again, I bought this for Special Collections at our local college. They are very pleased to have it.

  2. I am disappointed by this book. I am left with the impression that the photographer simply didn't spend enough time in the woods. Some of the photos are quite stunning, but the majority of them are not. The lengthy captions only add to this impression. They often try to excuse lackluster images by lamenting the difficulty of the hike, the fact that his equipment malfunctioned, and how the weather didn't cooperate. Those are things anybody who's taken a hike with a camera has experienced. As a professional, his job is to spend the long hours to get perfect shots, discard the imperfect ones, and then not moan about how difficult the whole process was. It is also disappointing, to someone who knows the Adirondacks well, that the photographer limited his outings to the most accessible and popular summits. The views from these summits are wonderful to experience first hand, but as published photographs they border on cliché.

2 comments about Michelin 2006 Road Atlas: USA-Canada-Mexico (Michelin Road Atlas).
  1. Living in the UK I have travelled tens of thousands of miles across Europe during the past 30 years or more, always using Michelin road atlases. When it came to a two month, 6000 mile plus driving vacation in the USA covering 9 states, I was delighted to discover that one was available for there. True to form the Michelin atlas didn't let me down.I also had a Rand McNally road atlas which I rarely used. Michelin knocks spots off Rand McNally. The maps are more clearly set out, easier to read and flow from page to page. When you are crossing a state line, which I did many times, you do not have to jump to another part of the atlas to find maps of the new state. The atlas can also be used in conjunction with the Michelin Guides to the USA which again are unbeatable with perhaps the exception of those by Dorning Kingsley.

  2. This little map book has put me back on track several times, a good quick reference in a compact book.

1 comments about Covered Wagon Days: From the Private Journals of Albert Jerome Dickson.
  1. Albert Jerome Dickson was a fourteen-year old youth when taking these notes of his 1864 journey westward to Montana. In later years his son Arthur compiled all his father's notes, journals and papers into this narrative. Young Albert was enthusiastic, sharp-eyed and keen in his observations.
Not only do we read of day to day travel on the trail, but also Indian uprisings and intimidations of the early 1860's; road agents, thieves and murderers and how vigilante groups confronted this behavior; life in early Montana mining communities; the reality of making ends meet while homesteading; establishment of territorial laws; character analysis of such men as Jim Bridger, J. M. Bozeman, military figures, the notorious Jack Slade and many others.
    An enjoyable and historical timepiece.

2 comments about The Deer of North America.
  1. What a thrill to see this book back in print. It's first edition was one of the Outdoor Life series and has given us the tools to understand one of North America's most majestic creatures. The life cycle, aging, growth patterns, habitat and environmental needs of the whitetail are explained in detail with the writer's storyteller style mixed in. This book can be understood and enjoyed by young and old, hunters and ranchers, nature lovers and anyone interested in learning more about one of the most unique animals on earth.

  2. There is nothing you want or need to know about deer that is not covered in this book. Rue has every detail about every variety of deer found in North America. He combines solid biological research with his own personal observations to provide an interesting, informative and entertaining work. This book belongs in the library of any serious hunter.
