  1. This is not a book for the casual reader -- the text on underwater archaeology can be somewhat dense and technical, and the listings of shipwrecks are encyclopedic, not narrative. However, if you are a wreck diver, shipwreck enthusiast or archaeologist, this is a useful reference volume. Marx's knowledge of the subject matter is obvious, though put to more enjoyable use in his books on the underwater excavation of Port Royal.

  2. Mr. Marx has written a wonderful book, which should be of value to anyone interested in sunken treasure. It is a labor of love, by a man who has lived an exciting life searching successfully for both treasure and historic material.

The book begins with a wonderful and very detailed history of the Spanish treasure fleets - and their impact on Europe, based on extensive research by the author. This is a most impressive and detailed scholarly effort, and alone justifies a read by anyone interested in the conquest of the New World and the effects of this newfound wealth on Old Europe.

The book then discusses modern salvage techniques and provides the would-be treasure hunter with helpful advice on how to conduct a search. I believe that anyone considering actually conducting an operation would be well advised to read this material and follow Mr. Marx's excellent advice.

The rest of the book consists of an index of known shipwrecks off the coasts and islands of the Americas, by location, and a brief history of each.

Many brave souls are asleep in the deep, and Marx has created a wonderful testament to them.

  1. I have this book, but it was published in 1990. In other words, I do not have the revised and updated version.

However, if this one is anything like the copy I have, it is wonderful. The full color pictures are lovely and are used to enhance the text.

Although this book doesn't tell the history of these states, it visits historic places within each state. Much of the history of these four states (NM, AZ, NV, UT) is told through the landscape and historic buildings of each state.

I have enjoyed every place that I have visited and my visits have only been enhanced by using this book as a resource in my travels.

  1. This is a children's book...but it is more than that! This beautifully written and illustrated book has universal appeal, with messages for any age. When I read it, I thought at once of my grand children and how much I wanted this book to share with them. In addition, I felt I really wanted to share it with friends who, like me, appreciate true beauty in nature, the written word, and in fine art. As a former teacher, I recognize that "Look About You" is a special book that has the qualities we continually seek in a "good" book. You will want to own this book and savor visiting the "wild places" with someone you care about!

  2. As an artist, I first purchased this book for myself because of the beautiful illustrations by artist Mary Fuscaldo. When I read the text by Erin Anderson, I realized what a treasure it would be for the young (and not so young) people who love the out of doors and the special places we all know and keep in our hearts.

  3. Artfully written by Erin Anderson, Look About You: A Magical Childhood In Michigan's Wild Places is a very special picture book meant to be read by parents to their children, and which commemorates and celebrates the joy of seeing Michigan's wilderness through a child's eyes. Soft color illustrations by Mary Fuscaldo enhance Anderson's narrative text. Filled from cover to cover with joy and reverence, Look About You provides a unique and highly enjoyable experience young readers, young listeners, and their parents.

  1. As a Canadian I can vouch for the fact that Sue Coleman has captured the essence of Fisrt Nation's deep spiritual roots, their artistic beauty and the true beauty of their mythology! This book is a rare combination of visual and expressive art!

  2. Having been to the Northwest US, Alaska and British Columbia several times, I truly appreciated the understanding of the artist's work in relation to the various wild creatures which the First Nation people have used in their totem poles and lore. I saw the book in Canada this summer and admired the work and the content very much. Very well done.
