2 comments about Strangers and Sojourners: A History of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula (Great Lakes Books).
- I purchased this book after a vacation to the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula where I toured one of the copper mines mentioned in the book.
To enjoy this book it helps if one has a curiosity about the region's history it's industry and the melting pot of people that made up it's workforce. Although a dry history at times, I believe this book to be one of if not the best on the topic. An important contribution to Michigan History. It is my hope that upon reading it people will recognize this book as the labor of love it truly is.
- I agree with another Amazon reviewer that the reading can be a tad 'dry' at times, quite uncustomary for the author.
However, it still has that "Thurner style" fast, pleasing pace that precludes excess verbiage and allows for the covering of a rather-broad topic in a single, readable volume. Furthermore, the author is a native to the area, which doesn't hurt his case.
For 'complete' coverage of the Copper Country, look no further than Mr. Thurner's three such books.

1 comments about Exploring Ancient Native America.
- After fining an arrowhead in Colorado I was curious as to its provinence. In this book I learned that what we call arrowheads are projectile points, and too heavy for a bow, even though they seem small. And it may well be over 1,000 years old. This is a wonderful tour through Native American sites and the past.

- I didn't realize I had ordered such a small version of this book. It just makes no sense to look at such lovely pictures on such a small scale.

2 comments about Washington, D.C.: A Pictorial Souvenir.
- I have visited Washington, D.C. several times, by myself and with my family. This book has the best photographic coverage of Washington in one cover that I have seen. The captions for the photographs are accurate and helpful. If you go on the Washington by Dark bus tours, this book is better than the photos most of us take for the monuments. You can save your film for pictures of your friends or family at the sites during the day. Additionally, the preface history of Washington is interesting and concise. I heartily recommend this photo essay to any Washington, D.C. visitor.
-
Nice book of this type depicting Washington DC. This one is better than most because the pictures are large and there's some unique perspectives. The only downside is there are so many books of this type it's hard to tell them apart. I've seen other works by this pair and they always do a nice job displaying their subject.

2 comments about Lighthouses of North America.
- aNYONE INTERESTED IN AN EXCELLENT OVERVIEW OF U.S. LIGHTHOUSES WOULD BE VERY HAPPY WITH THIS BOOK. A VERY THOROUGH COVERAGE OF MOST STATES AND EXCELLENT PHOTOS TO ACCOMPANY THEM. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.
- In addition to basic information about each lighthouse (such as when it was built, the location, and the type of equipment it uses) this delightful book presents brief but tantalizing stories about many of the structures. The color photos are also lovely.
Of course a book of this scope cannot present much information about each lighthouse, but the information it does present makes me want to search out more history associated with each one--and visit it!
The lighthouses are aranged by state and province, and even include some from Caribbean islands, which makes it easy for a traveler to add them to a planned trip. Information about the ones I have visited seems accurate, so I will trust this book when planning future trips.
Overall, this book is useful for the traveler and enjoyable for the browser.

3 comments about Travels in a Stone Canoe: The Return to the Wisdomkeepers.
- A wonderful account of two men, a writer and a photographer, who become enveloped in a new consciousness; or more accurately an old one. I was up until the wee hours every night until I finished it. And each morning I found myself more aware of the Creator's presence in every stone, tree and being - an awareness and an awakeining that they are all following God's instructions. Thus, I was gently brought to the question: am I following the Creator's instruction? The "Origional Instructions" Harvey and Steve have passed on to me in this volume have helped me answer that question.
- These tweo white men are chosen to take a journy in life. This is not a come on along along and pack you bags. This is an inner and spiritual journey for these two men as much as it is a journey for the elders of different nations to accept and trust these men to some of the their most private thoughts and lives. a book well written and appericated that it shows The People as the caretakers that they are to the world.
- This book is a must read for anyone who has read any of the works by Harvey Arden and/or Steve Wall! Extremely well-written and the chapters are in the first person of both authors. It is, I think, their best work that I have read so far. This is an honest, unpretentious, examination by the authors of their own journey connecting with the elders and the insights they offer. You will not be able to put it down; I read it in one afternoon without a break. I intend to re-read; it is that good.

1 comments about A Night On the Ground A Day in the Open.
- This set of articles, originally written for magazines and catlalogues, is one of the most eloquent collections of mountain writing I've yet come upon. The book is divided up into chapters such as 'Climbing with Style', which features articles about "the whole art of natural protection" written at the the start of the clean climbing revolution, and 'Further Aborad' which includes the authors account of a climb on Ama Dablam.
One of the features I most enoyed about the book was the introductions to various historical figures such as Smoke Blanchard and Royal Robbins. And the memoir style accounts of what it was like for a small band of climbers to live in the mountains away from civilization getting their kicks out of the "simple joys" and living in bare subsistence, long before climbing turned into the popular sport which it might be called today.
Doug Robinson is well qualified to write what he does, and his style is nice and clear without being base. Most of it is written in an autobiographical style, dealing with developments on the climbing and skiing scene for wenty odd years. If you are partial to a bit of Dharma Bums then get this book. Also anyone interested in the history of the Sierra Nevada.
