  1. When I travel, I buy two kinds of guidebooks: one that offers a lot of history and details about places to visit and another one that fits in my pocket and offers the most detailed maps. I study the first book prior to my trip or in my hotel and use the latter one to navigate places, because I hate blatantly giving myself away as a tourist as I unfold a huge map in the middle of the street. "Not For Tourists Guide to NYC" was just perfect because it had all of the streets illustrated by neighborhoods and included street numbers as well. For each neighborhood, there are three maps: one that offers a list of places to eat or entertain, one that shows essential services like police station or the post office, and finally one that shows the area with subway stops and parking spots. In addition to its small size, the cover was entirely black and chic, which made me feel comfortable pulling it out on the streets or even on the subway. It was my first extended visit to NYC last weekend and my friend and I gave directions to five or six tourists/New Yorkers in three days! Everyone who asked for directions was very impressed with my NFT Guide, as were my friends who live in the city. I plan to relocate to NYC later this year and am confident that my NFT Guide will help me get acquainted to the city as quickly as possible. If you are like me and want accurate directions while blending in with the natives, I highly recommend that you bring a copy of the NFT Guide with you. Since this book mainly consists of highly detailed maps only, I recommend that you also buy another guidebook that offers you background history and/or information on sightseeing, if you want to know info such as museum hours of operation, history of certain buildings, anecdotes, etc. I just hope that NFT brings more guidebooks on other cities in the USA and beyond!

  1. Any southerner living in New York City will appreciate this lively, well-written restaurant guide that can soothe all your cravings. Soul food, bbq, Louisiana cooking, and any other country foodstuffs you can think of are right here in NYC (believe it or not!), and these southern-born boys have taste-tested all of them for us and come up with some real winners. If you find your stomach churning for grits and sweet potato pie the way I do, this book should be at your side always.

  1. This is the map to get - small enough to not make you look like a big dork if you need to do a quick "map check" while out on the streets and very easy to carry around, but with plenty of detail, and very easy to immediately read with important buildings marked. It's also laminated for durability.
This little map really increased our enjoyment of New York, and I can recommend it with confidence. Even has a handy subway map!

  2. I had never been to Manhattan before and would need a good map. The New York City Slicker by Hagstrom was recommended by a friend who had been several times and found it useful. It was great. I was able to navigate the streets with ease.

I would also recommend the NY sightseeing bus tours that allow you to HOP On, HOP off for a two day period. It helped bring the map alive

  1. This is an excellent reference manuel when traveling within the tri-state area. My husband referred to this book daily as a courier. I need one to send with my boss when he has business meetings in NY, NJ and CT and know that he will be able to find his way there and back again. He doesn't like Mapquest's little maps. He wants his directions easy to follow, clear as a bell and indexed in the back of the book. This book is really the best source book for our area.

  2. I hunted for a high quality of map of the New York City region, and this was the best I could find. Most maps are Manhattan only, and I needed detailed coverage of the wider area to consider some commuting/apartment-hunting issues. Other maps are made from dreadfully old drawings -- when you see those sharp new images in travel guides etc, they are dramatically more readable and clearly drawn than the ancient looking draftings in most of the map books I looked at. Other maps don't offer enough perspective--all close-up detail, but no "big picture" pages to give you a sense for how they hook up. Finally, most books have a lousy format--hard to hold open, or poor binding, etc.

This book at least covers the 5-boroughs, but totally excludes the nearby NJ areas, Westchester or Nassau. It also doesn't offer enough big picture regional info-- the subway map is Manhattan-only, the regional highway map doesn't offer a close-up of how to get in/out of Manhattan, there are no "medium-scale" maps that show how the huge chunks of ultra-detailed Queens all link together. The drafting is old but pretty readable. They chose odd landmarks to put in and exclude. The book is sturdy enough, but the giant spiral binding ruins the middle section of every page! There is surely a more elegant way to lay out the map around the spiral. Good luck finding Little Italy intersections or downtown Brooklyn addresses or many other key locations. What terrible corner-cutting with that one. Where is the Thomas Brothers guide for NYC...?
