  1. This book is awesome! The reviews are on the money and will save you a lot of time and aggrivation when trying to plan a night out. This should be required reading for those who can't make up their mind. It's a must have for any New Yorker or travller to the city!

  2. one of the great things about new york is the great variety of places to go and socialize. "shecky's" takes you to all of them, and categorizes (and characterizes them) perfectly. i don't know how my friends and i found our way around new york without shecky's help. now that we've "been there, done that and got the t-shirt," shecky's reviews are right on the money.

  3. This "Zagats" for bars is a great way to find a new place to hang, instead of going to the same old haunt. It makes you want to try different "scenes" and get out there and enjoy New York City at its crazy, lively, best. Most of the reviews were right on the mark.

  1. I used this book (an older edition) on my first trip to New York City and I found it very succinct and helpful. If you don't want lengthy descriptions and lots of historical background, this the book for you. It gets to the point about some of the "must sees" and "shouldn't miss", as well as warning you about some cultural differences. The Essential series is also great because it's thin and lightweight, yet some color pictures so that you can recognize some of the sites you're searching the skyline for.

  1. This CD is so cool! It's so much better than a boring travel book with static pictures. You can see 360 degree views of all the top NY destinations - you just have to see it for yourself. I live in NY and still find this CD fascinating. I also bought it for friends in California who have never been to NY and they love it too!

  2. I bought the "virtual Tokyo" CD first, then I ordered this one. It's pretty cool. Just like being there! I like being able to see all the sights from the comfort and safety of my own home. It's cool to pan up and down and zoom in. Much better than the very amatuer pictures I took when I was there!

Anyway, I would recommend this CD if you're planning to visit the big apple, or just wish you were.

    Dave

  1. I recently relocated to New York City with only this book in hand. It has been invaluable in helping me find my way around as well as finding fun things to do.

  2. The Big Apple definition in the book is wrong again. Other guide books have it right, but LET'S GO just doesn't care about accuracy.

  3. I have been to NYC on two vacations. I bought this book before my second vacation and had a much better time thanks to Let's Go. I highly recommend this book! It has very useful and easy to read maps, great info on places to stay, eat, and what to do, plus great bits of history about each part of the city. I wouldn't go to NYC without it!

  1. For my first visit to NYC I wanted a guidebook with a lot of information, easy to use etc. My partner has traveled a lot and wanted something that showed him new places to see. Both of us, of course, were interested in saving $$$.

New York for less saved us a lot - from the hotel (35% off at a lovely place indeed) to the best museums and attractions (even the Empire State Building) to some excellent restaurants (some of which my cosmopolitan, smirking partner recognized).

Because there is a credit-card style discount card, I was not embarrassed to get the discounts as am I sometimes with paper coupons and cut-outs. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to save big in the Big Apple (haha). J. Maria LaValle

  1. I love this guide book. I couldn't find my old Streetwise NYC map so I went looking for a new one. This is a cool little book that opens into two sections. The front half is made up of a general view map of Manhattan with the subway. This map opens into 2 awesome fold-out detailed maps with all street names, major points of interest, hotels, shopping...etc. All this in a much smaller format than Streetwise. The back half of the book is a slick guide book. Although it is very abbreviated, I found that it wasn't lacking anything. Many of my favorite spots are mentioned, as well as some that I look forward to checking out.

To top off the neat presentation, the book has a slide out pen and an area to take notes, addresses and numbers...and on the top of the spine is an actual compass the flips out so you can orient yourself with the map. I find that nothing says 'native new yorker' more than whipping out a compass on Park Ave.

I love this book. It's size makes it a discreet reference (except for the compass) that fits in your pocket. It has all the tourist info. So for the price, buy this one and spend the rest on a specific guide for this city (like shopping or dining). Leave the bulky, endless guide books at home.

  2. My son received this from his grandparents when he was going to NYC for the first time. What a great little gem this guide is! It's small, has a pen, a pop-out map, a city guide and a compass on the binding. The pen is lighted as well. Inside are guides to "buying it"...restaurants, parks, you name it. The map is easy to pop out and better yet, goes back together wonderfully. Fits into a backpack or pocket perfectly. Kudos to whomever came up with the design idea!
