  1. In moving to New York City from the western U.S., my biggest challenge is trying to figure out where something is. Having traded my Volvo station wagon for a rolling shopping cart and a walking program, it's critical that I have a clear idea of where I'm going before I start out.

I have at least a half-dozen maps of the city, bought for various applications; but the one that actually ends up in my bag every time is the City Slicker. Many other maps are in pocket-size books or in cute popups, which appeal to me because of their portability. But the print is invariably too small for my 50-something eyes, even with my glasses.

Adding to my "newcomer disorientation" is the mind-boggling numbering system for addresses on the avenues: on Madison Avenue, the 200 "block" stretches for 6 blocks; those same blocks on Fifth Avenue bear designations in the 300s and 400s, and on Sixth, they are in the 900s and 1000s!

Time to pull out the City Slicker, which is large enough to actually read and tells me not only where a particular address can be found, but shows major businesses so that I can see on what side of the street that establishment is located. It also includes highly readable bus and subway routes and station locations for the area (as well as an overall subway map of Manhattan), and a list of helpful phone numbers (from AAA, Travelers Aid, and the crime victim's hotline, to the major transportation agencies, to the museums and entertainment venues).

Last but not least, there is an index listing auto services, clubs, hotels, medical centers, movie theaters, museums and galleries, nightlife, places of special interest, places of worship, public places, radio and tv, restaurants, schools, stores, theatres, and transportation facilities, all keyed to the map.

For a newcomer to the city (either as a resident or a visitor) this map is indispensable!

  1. Contains fantastic photos. A little to 'Photoshopped' for my taste but great. The only problem I had with the book is that it contains no actual panoramic images. Many are wide angle but nothing that fits the definiton of panoramic.

  2. I bought it as a pictorial souvenir of my first trip to the great city in 2000. The photography is stunning and the pictures travel the length of Manhatten as you progress through the book.
Now the book is a testament to everything that is and was great about the city, so much has changed since september 2001. Somehow pictures breathtakingly capture the joy and sadness of humanity far more than words ever can.
I really treasure the book now.

  3. The pictures in this book are really beautiful. However, the spine of the book was not intact when I got it. The pages started to fall out after a week.

  1. I recently bought a used copy to guide my search for no-fee apartments in Manhattan. I was a little wary since it was published in 2005, but I found it to be a rather accurate compilation, which was easier than trolling no-fee websites. The guide is 214 pages and is broken into three parts.
    1. 2-3 page overview (basic deomographics, atmosphere, good restaurants, etc). of neighborhoods in Manhattan and some neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn.
    2. Basics of getting an apartment. How a broker works. Why you might need a guarantor, etc.
    3. The actual listings (75 pages) of no-fee buildings categorized by neighborhood.

I ended up going out with some brokers to look at places, some of which are listed as no-fee in this guide. Essentially, the brokers would try to get you to pay a hefty broker's fee for an apartment you could get without the fee. I was also moving with a dog and was disappointed that the guide only had a few listings for pet-friendly buildings.
Overall, a good guide to no-fee buildings that may be particularly useful for out-of-towners looking to move to NYC.
