  1. having grown up in sheepshead bay, I couldnt say no to this book. Pictures and history are quite interesting, but they arranged somewhat haphazardly and the history is not in chronologic order. A good book if you are from the area

  2. The book has some good photos, but the printing is poor quality and the layout and design are sloppy and confusing.
Whole sections of the text are lifted directly from Vincent Seyfried's "The Long Island Railroad: A Comprehensive History." And the source of some of Brian Merlis' photos must be questioned.

  1. Wonderful tips about things to do, places to go and how to move about in NYC easily. Lynn is one of the most enthusiastic, intrepid travelers that I know and she delights in passing on information that she has gleaned, sometimes not in the best circumstances, to others. Where to next, Lynn?

  1. hmm, it seems most people are reviewing the Rough Guide New York City GUIDEBOOK, and not the map which is a separate item.

    ok...... here's my review.

The Rough Guide New York City Map is absolutely the best map you can have of Manhattan. It features a clean modern layout of Manhattan all the way up to 147th Street. Printed on tearproof, waterproof, flexible plastic material, the map is jam packed with culinary, shopping, and cultural landmarks along with subway stations, ferries, houses of worship, and even vantage spots where one can get the best views of various NYC landmarks. Even though packed with information, the map is surprisingly easy to read thanks to its clean modern layout and san-serif fonts. The map even includes the restricted area near Chatham Square closed by the police after September 11, and remains closed today. In the back there is a special time chart indicating what time various shops and restaurants open, and close. There is also a mini map indicating all the major highways into the five boroughs, and small arrows indicating traffic direction. rkchin. more map reviews at http://www.nychinatown.org/bookstore/index6.html

  1. This is a cool little guide for a weekend in the Big Apple. Designed for travelers with two days to burn, it shows you the highlights through walking tours. A small map is included, providing a quick overview of New York's layout. The city is broken down into districts (ie. SoHo & Greenwich Village, Chinatown and East Village) with a selection of restaurants, stores, and attractions for each one. All in all, a good deal. One note of caution however: this guide is the same size as a credit card, but the covers are magnets. So don't put this near any of your credit cards or computer disks. It could do a number on your Visa!

  2. It certainly is a cute little book, very portable. The maps are nice and I can just imagine myself walking down the street and whipping out the book to find a cozy little bar in Chelsea.

However, the book it is very out of date. Here is an example excerpt "WHERE TO START DAY 2: World Trade Center. The twin towers practically define the lower Manhattan skyline....."

If it still has info about the WTC, then perhaps the other info is also not quite up-to-date?
