1 comments about American Map Manhattan Spotlight on Midtown City Slicker.
- In moving to New York City from the western U.S., my biggest challenge is trying to figure out where something is. Having traded my Volvo station wagon for a rolling shopping cart and a walking program, it's critical that I have a clear idea of where I'm going before I start out.
I have at least a half-dozen maps of the city, bought for various applications; but the one that actually ends up in my bag every time is the City Slicker. Many other maps are in pocket-size books or in cute popups, which appeal to me because of their portability. But the print is invariably too small for my 50-something eyes, even with my glasses.
Adding to my "newcomer disorientation" is the mind-boggling numbering system for addresses on the avenues: on Madison Avenue, the 200 "block" stretches for 6 blocks; those same blocks on Fifth Avenue bear designations in the 300s and 400s, and on Sixth, they are in the 900s and 1000s!
Time to pull out the City Slicker, which is large enough to actually read and tells me not only where a particular address can be found, but shows major businesses so that I can see on what side of the street that establishment is located. It also includes highly readable bus and subway routes and station locations for the area (as well as an overall subway map of Manhattan), and a list of helpful phone numbers (from AAA, Travelers Aid, and the crime victim's hotline, to the major transportation agencies, to the museums and entertainment venues).
Last but not least, there is an index listing auto services, clubs, hotels, medical centers, movie theaters, museums and galleries, nightlife, places of special interest, places of worship, public places, radio and tv, restaurants, schools, stores, theatres, and transportation facilities, all keyed to the map.
For a newcomer to the city (either as a resident or a visitor) this map is indispensable!

1 comments about Frommer's 2000 New York City from $80 a Day (Frommer's New York from $80 a Day, 2000).
- This is THE book to take to New York. It is accurate, readable, amusing, and fits in your purse. The reviews of where to eat and where to stay may not let you do NYC on $80.00, but they certainly help prioritize where to put your dollar down, and what to expect back. The division of the book into individual areas of the city is most helpful, and the frequent small maps in the book are so much easier than dragging out the big map (which is included). I've made two trips to the city with my teenage daughters, and this book was my Bible and my security blanket. Great research, well organized, and fun to read.

1 comments about The New York Times Guide to Restaurants in New York City 2001 (New York Times Guide to Restaurants in New York City, 2001).
- This is an excellent guide to the best NY restaurants and to some of the more interesting neighborhood restaurants. I wish there were a bit more information about the size and setting, smoking areas and so on. But by far the greatest drawback of this book is its execrable binding. After only limited use, my copy began to disintegrate, not exactly what one desires in a reference book that one hopes to carry around. This is inexcusable. Back to the Michelin Guides for me! I have a 39 Michelin France Guide that is still hanging together. Planned obsolescence!!!

1 comments about New York from A to Z: Traveler's Look-Up Source for the Big Apple (Capital Travels).
- I had never been to New York, when I went for a visit last week. What would I have done without this book! Paul Wasserman provides clear, short descriptions of all New York sites, restaurants, hotels, theatres, etc. The book gives great advice and ideas without strangling you to remain in a narrow line of destinations. The book gives you the freedom to enjoy the city in whatever manner suits you the best, but it serves as an anchor to put your mind at ease. It is the perfect travel guide for all visitors to New York City.
