  1. We have been using Marilyn Wood's Wonderful Weekends Copyright 1984, 1987 and enjoyed it very, very much. Right from the first trip, we knew we had a winner. The paperback is dog earred, paperclipped, underlined in red and there are pencil and ink notes in all the margins. It is a truly wonderful book but needed updating.

We purchased the "All New Fourth Edition!" of Wonderful Weekends thinking it would have the best of the previous edition, plus new places to explore minus the places that are no longer there.

Not so! Several of the areas that we looked up included restaurants that have not been there in 2 or 3 years. One of the B&B's has had new owners for years and the listing shows the old owners' story and names.

We will stick with our original 1984-l987 version and use the new one for backup with each trip. Hopefully, there will be some New information in this Fourth Edition.

This was a lesson to me that when I look for updates for books of this type, it would be a good idea to find out the date of the update before making a purchase.

  1. Even if you don't live in New York, where Greenmarkets are THE place to buy the freshest and most delicious produce, you will use this book often. I frequently look up how to store different vegetables, and the photos help to figure out such things as which green is which. The recipes are simple, based as they are on being made from the best and freshest produce.

This book will inspire you toward a healthy use of vegetables.

  2. As someone who practically lives in the Union Square greenmarket, I greatly appreciate this very useful book. Perfect for both novice and gourmet chief alike (who frequently shop it the greenmarkets), it has excellent information about the selection, storing and preparation of the cornucopia of fruits and vegetables available in the greenmarkets. There are other useful sections about baked goods, cheese, flowers & houseplants, fish & seafood, honey & other bee products, milk & other dairy products, as well as poultry, meat & game. What I found very useful was the harvest calendar, located in the front of the book. Thanks to this book, I was able to prepare vegetables that I had never used before. The recipes are quite good too. This is a book that I often use, and it is one that should find a home on every kitchen shelf.

  3. I had picked this book up at a fundraiser for community gardens years ago and had forgotten about it--that is, until I finally got a spot in my local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) collective. I found my copy and was reminded as to just what a great guide to NYC Greenmarket produce this is. It's well-illustrated and has a guide to many of the items that you'll find, and how to use them.

  1. This, along with Eyewitness Travel, was absolutely the best NYC tour book I found. Lots and lots of glossy color photos, plus great information about one of the greatest cities on Earth. Plenty of handy maps, including subway info. Nice historical tidbits as well. I still enjoy flipping through this book and remembering a fun trip.

  1. There are about 32 pictures total each of which seem like they were photos pasted onto the pages. That's one of the reasons I bought the book. The photos and the way they were printed are beautiful.

On the other hand, the accompanying text ranges from awful to average. Some of it has barely a connection to the photo and many have little to do with people. Some gems include cheezy puns such as this text which accompanies a picture of the bronze bull statue near Wall Street: "in the aftermath of the attacks ... in Septmber 11, it was hard to be bullish." And this text which accompanies a picture of lower Manhattan from the tip to the Brooklyn Bridge: "Here we are looking chiefly at Manhattan". And they are mistaken to say Manhattan is 23 sq miles in size; it is 33 sq miles. There is also an excessive use of commas.

I understand only a limited number of pictures can be included in the book but since Hoberman is an accomplished aerial photographer, I have to ask where are aerial pictures of buildings in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens? Where is the Holland Tunnel? These are places I associate with ordinary New Yorkers (and their commuting neighbors).

  2. This lovely tribute to the city of New York, dedicated to the innocents who were so cruelly murdered in the September 11 attacks on the US, is a moving, heartfelt ode to the greatest of American cities. The photography and production values of this book are incredible beyond the ability of mere words to describe. The text is moving without being cloying or sappy, and adds to the photography without overpowering it. This book also includes several photographs of the Twin Towers that were not included in the Hobermans' hardcover edition, "New York", a massive 160+ page book that is well worth purchasing. I highly recommend "New York: A Tribute to the City and its People" for those who want to remember the Big Apple the way it was. And will be again...

  1. This is the perfect guide book for people who want to see the city in depth. A friend of mine told me I have the place gene, and THE COMPANION GUIDE books fill that need better than any other guide books. What are some of the most stunning office building interiors in NYC? Where is Peter Stuyvestant buried? Why is NYC the best possible place for the U.N., the headquarters of the world?
It is so well written that you can read it for the sheer pleasure of the prose, but each chapter is organized as a walk, and I am chomping at the bit to head out on them all. Great book!

  1. Take a narrowed focus on Brooklyn, New York alone, put it in a tall but narrow pocket-sized take-along tote, add historic photos from the Brooklyn Historical Society along with maps and directions, and you have created a walking tour guide unique in its approach and scope, with The Historic Walking Tours: Big Onion Guide To Brooklyn. Several pages of fuzzy printing mid-book don't but temporarily mar the success of a wonderful little guide probing many historic neighborhoods and buildings.

  2. As a fellow tour guide, I know Big Onion does good work, and this is no exception. As a rival tour guide (New York Like a Native), I'll also suggest that this book, like any guidebook, is no substitute for a live guided tour. There are a couple of errors (but not at an unacceptable level). More importantly, any tour enshrined in a book is already out of date--for example, a tour of Fort Greene & Clinton Hill should address the looming Nets arena complex. And any book has space limits; this omits numerous streets, buildings, institutions, and bars/restaurants/stores I'd want to mention.
