  1. One of my favorite books of all time was the NY Bargain Hunter, a little yellow book crammed with dense type and arcane symbols that told where to get just about anything in the city. It was full of obsessively-gathered advice and compulsive detail. Manhattan User's Guide, a wonderful newsletter, is a more high-toned modern day descendant of the old Bargain Hunter, and this book is a phenomenally useful best-of compendium. If Suisman and Molesworth lack the maniacal thoroughness of their forebear, they make up for it with elegant design and impeccable, miraculously consistent taste. There are a surprising number of restaurant tips, mostly middle tier "nice" places with a few forays above and below.

  2. I needed contractors for work in my apartment and the selection in this Guide were excellent. The work was done on time and very professional.I will use it again for various services.

  3. This is a fabulous guide for all kinds of products and services in New York City. The authors have found the answers to lots of hard-to-find things in New York. Makes living in the city easier!

  4. I just found this book and think it's the best I've ever seen on living in New York. It's really well written and covers an incredible range of topics -- a great resource. It's a book no New Yorker should be without.

  1. The title of Sanctuary refers to a place of worship and also a state of mind: Thomas Roma places these in visual perspective, locating sacred parts of the community within the Brooklyn area and charting the efforts of generations to leave their mark. His excellent black and white photos pack in contrasting images of different religious faiths and sanctuaries.

  1. "Knopf City Guide: New York" is a thorough and winningly-portable guidebook.

The seven authors provide excellent advice on where to stay, eat, shop, and visit. All this is beautifully coordinated with a hodgepodge of maps, photos, and charts.

Though the pictures are generally small, they couldn't be brighter or sharper. Whether it's the opulent lobby of the Marriott Financial Center or the extraordinary biscuits and muffins at Sarabeth's, the photos are a joy to survey.

Just as colorful and helpful are the multitude of maps. You certainly won't have any problems finding your way around the city using their sterling graphics and location indicators.

Like all the Knopf City Guides, "New York" is a grand little guidebook.

  2. In a mad search for a good book about NYC, I came across the Knopf version. It's silver cover caught my eye at first, but when I opened the book and saw the pictures, maps, restaurant summaries, etc. I was sold. This book not only helped me find my way around the city, but also helped me to figure out what I wanted to do on a day trip. One of the best things about this book compared to others is that it includes many pictures of the sites you are likely to visit. Most other books that I saw only included a description, I like to know what I am looking for.

Overall, I gave this book 5 stars. It really captures what I need to know about New York.

  1. I love the roughguide series. They mini guide is small, but don't let that fool you, it has a lot of helpful information, and my wife and I thoroughly used it on our trip. My brother-in-law, who lives in New York even found some good restaurants in it that he did not previously know about.

  1. At 4" x 6.5" and 144 pages this is not cheap information. The real key to the book however, are the lines: "If you are looking for peepshows, topless bars, escort services or massage parlors you won't find them here. In our opinion these businesses not only cater exclusively to men and typically exploit women, but - most important - aren't very sexy." I guess "erotic" is in the definition of the definer.

A good portion of the information could be obtained from either the yellow pages or the internet. Most of the information revolves in one manner or another around the fetish/swing scene. My take on that is that anyone involved in either scene would already know where to look - maybe not. The best information is the list of internet addresses and sites in the back. This is certainly a bit more than most of the "romance weekend" kind of books but leaving out 50% of what one could define as "erotic" leaves a bit to be desired. Beyond the judgement of the authors of what is and isn't for "women".

  1. I met Bernd at a German bar on the Lower East Side last October and crossed paths with him again on New Year's Eve. Until then, I knew Bernd only as the man who borrowed my cheap digital camera to shoot some shots for his scrapbook. The shots were OK, nothing special, so I was absolutely blown away when I saw what he did professionally. He gave me a copy of this book on New Year's Eve, and I have since sent copies to a dozen friends around the country and overseas. Technically, the photographs are superb -- uncanny in their use of natural lighting, deep shadows and perspective. But what makes these black-and-whites of New York and New Yorkers so memorable is that the sum is greater than the parts. Bernd's camera leads us past New York's magnificence and its squalor, but deposits us home again with wondrous, renewed pride in our city's ability time-and-again to spawn change and diversity, and to make the most of adversity. I think it is fitting that it took an outsider, a kindly German photographer with a penchant for wild Beethoven-like hair, to present New York the way it is.
