  1. This book served as the number 1 resource I found when relocating to New York City. It provided me extremely useful and practical information relating to schools, apartment finding, weekend retreats and dog runs for my dog.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is moving to New York from any other city and needs some starting point, regardless of whether or not you are married or single.

  2. I have been in NYC for 1year.I am from Japan. This book covers all information that I need as a newcomer to NYC.I was especially interested in the subject"for foreign newcomer".It is about New York Culture, etiquette and how to get a job.Now I am sharing this book with all my friends who are in the same situation as being a foreigner in NYC. I believe that this book is the most practical guide book about the Big Apple.

  3. I just moved to NYC from Utah, and needed one source of information from everything to finding a school for my 9 year old daughter to where the appropriate apartment for my family was. Welcome to New York was the only book I bought, and continue to use it on a regular basis as a source for all my New York needs.

    -Cliff

  4. Only two chapters of the book are very helpful. The sections on the neighborhoods provides a good overview but overall the book is outdated and not reliable as a resource.

  1. I wracked my brain to pick out a gift for my young co-workers this year. I didn't want to give a something that would gather dust. I was so pleased when I settled on the Nightlife Guide. I got great feedback, and didn't have to spend--or wrap--a lot!

  1. Get this if you already live in NYC or intend to visit, you will not be disappointed. I loved the detailed info on the architecture of the Woolworth building and the history behind the folks in buried in Trinity Cemetary. I enjoyed the facts of who used to live in what buildings in the Village. When covering the 5-Points Section, what is now the Federal &State Courts area & Chinatown, was absolutlely fun trying to hunt down these old sites still visible for myself. All the info on the history of some of the street names was curious such as Mott, Pell, Bayard & Baxter streets were named after the butchers in the area when that area was a stinking mess. The lore surrounding Wahington Square Park, especially the "Hanging Tree" was fascinating. I'm still trying to figure out which tree it is! All the semi-hidden small cemetaries mentioned in Manhattan is worth a look; knowing that these still exist especially when the real estate here is so astronimical in price. I hope people make good use of this guide when showing off the City to visitors & I'm sure tourists will get a kick out of an insiders tour of NYC.

  1. This book is an indispensible guide to daily eating in Manhattan. Every restaurant in the book that I have tried has been at least good, and some of the places that I have found have been truly excellent. Where this book truly shines is in picking out the real jewels among the thousands of small, nondescript restaurants in the city. Viv's Guide also includes very accurate pricing information, which is certainly a welcome change from the the seemingly random amounts given in Zagats.

Additionally, Viv's Guide is pocket-size, meaning that you can carry it around with you at all times and be able to stun your friends with your intimate knowledge of NYC restaurants. Another handy feature is that people who purchase the book can access the book's full content online at the author's website.

If you are a New Yorker who eats out frequently, particularly on any kind of budget, then I highly recommend this book.

  2. I heard about this book through a posting on Chowhound.com and decided to give it a try. Must say, I'm intriguied. There are a lot of listings in this book that I haven't seen covered elsewhere. In my own neighborhood (UES), it pretty much hits the nail on the head. All my favorites are in here, even the ones I thought only I knew about! (Why, oh why, must they let the cat out of the bag about Pyramida... oh well. I guess it deserves the success...)

  3. I like it. I did find one error (a dish they recommended was not on the restaurant's menu), but otherwise it's been very handy to have around. I find myself reaching for it instead of my zagats, and that says something.

  4. There are a ton of eating guides about New York. And this one gets lost in the crowd. The descriptions of the restaurants are brief and vague. What I thought was going to be a guide to the affordable culinary gems, was merely a list of cheap restaurants with little effort spent on separating "cheap and good" from "just cheap".

  1. Never have I been more drawn into a series of photographs. I can practically feel the temperature, hear my surroundings as I peer into what is almost real. These pictures are works of art. New York rarely looks this beautiful, yet Lieberman has either found every instance, or created them just for us. Breathtaking. Truly.
