5 comments about Fodor's Flashmaps New York City, 7th edition: The Ultimate Map Guide (Flashmaps).
- I bought this book a little over a year ago and have used it for several business trips. It is small and easy to carry, doesn't look touristy, and gives me a lot of confidence getting around Manhattan. The best $ I ever spent. You know how some people just seem to "know" New York even though they don't live there? Well, that's me now.
- Certainly veteran New Yorkers will snicker that they don't need "Fodor's Flashmaps New York" to get around town. And they may very well be right. However, as a New Yorker with many international friends I field countless queries about what to do in New York City when you get here. Let's be honest...the Big Apple is gigantic. And no matter how well versed you are about New York City...things change so quickly in this town that it is smart to have this tidy little book around just in case you happen to suffer from brainlock.
And then of course sometimes friends ask for help for things for the kids or for their young teens. Moreover, some queries are specifically for daylight hours, nightlife, weekend activities or happenings in boroughs outside of Manhattan. This text can help. Additionally, Fodor's includes essential telephone numbers for hotels, places of worship, ballparks, schools and universities, airports, transportation, museums, art galleries, parks, shopping, dining, theaters, movies, libraries, consulates, hospitals and hip nightlife activities. Fodor's even provides zip codes but no e-mail addresses. This book is a great tool. It's small and can easily slip into the inside of your sports coat or if you have a normal size purse, just pop it in and you're set. Or better yet...carry it around in your back pocket (it fits). There are 61 maps and thousands of listings. It will help you walk around, take buses, ride the subways or take railways into the suburbs. In my opinion it clearly is worth the investment for metropolitans or for anyone who wants to visit New York City. One thing is for sure...it will save you plenty of time, and as everyone knows...time is an important commodity. Bert Ruiz
- I dont know how the conversation started, but I was at the Union Square store of a major competitor of Amazon, lets just call it FarmStructures & Nobel Booksellers, and the security guard told me that he had relied on this book as a native New Yorker for years. So I bought it.
And now *I* have relied on it for years. Whether you are looking for where the D train crosses the 7 or where exactly Cornelia Street is anyway, this book is excellent. Museums, movie theaters, road maps and highways are all here. The shopping and restaurants sections are good for out-of-towners looking for the classics, less useful for New Yorkers looking for the next new thing, obviously. Its small, convenient, and well-drafted (the maps themselves are different colors so you can readily find what youre looking for as you flip through yellow is street /subway; pink is daytime attractions; black/blue for nighttime attractions). All in all, anybody living in or visiting New York frequently would find this useful. If you are a one-time tourist, though, youre probably better off going with something more comprehensive like Lonely Planet. Enjoy!
- I highly recommend that when you visit NYC you carry a copy of Flashmaps with you. It's a convenient subway and bus map, shows you all the neighborhoods, museums, post offices, etc. But the thing I use the most is the cross street lookup, which I relied on not just while new in NYC but also as a long-time resident.
I discovered the NYC Flashmaps many years ago when I asked a limo driver exactly where a business address was. He pulled out his Flashmaps, turned to the cross street page and told me the exact cross street in well... a flash. He told me no professional driver and no New Yorker should be without it. I bought my first copy that day and have been telling residents and vistors alike for years.
- Totally portable, accurate and inexpensive. I would not venture out in Manhattan without this booklet in my bag.

1 comments about New York, New York: The City in Art and Literature.
- Not quite an anthology, not nearly a history, and yet, in its own way, a very satisfactory sampler of New York culture and history. Introduced by the indefatigable Brooke Astor, "New York, New York; The City in Art abd Literature" gives you little tastes of the different eras, neighborhoods, and peoples that have populated this monumental city. Don't look for any depth or probing information here; this is strictly for the coffee table. Still, the quality of the prints and the printing is superior, and the literary selections are a little off the beaten path--which makes the book more interesting than one would think.

2 comments about Queer New York City 2002/2003: The Annual Guide to Gay & Lesbian NYC.
- Aldous Huxley wrote, "For every great traveler who has any taste of his own, the only useful guidebook will be the one which he himself has written." That said, the editor has created a tremendously useful and compact volume that is much like what I would have written, were I able to visit all these places.
Readers will find this guide good entertainment while traveling to New York (it's very readable, unlike others), as well as good for carrying as a reference while exploring the city (it fits easily into a pocket, backpack, or purse). This book was written with the audience in mind. It includes directions, websites, phone number, hours of operation, and includes points of interest that may be near a particular entry. While the overall organization of the book is by type of entertainment or activity, the index is arranged alphabetically as well as by neighborhood (a very helpful feature). Queer New York City is full of practical advice - the kind you would provide a visiting friend. It has a sprinkling of humor without being obnoxious, is clearly written to give the reader a good idea of what to expect from a particular establishment, and is never too wordy. If you're visiting New York City for the first time and are looking for places to go, if you're a regular visitor and want to expand your horizons and find places you didn't know existed, or if you're a native and want to give visitors a practical, well-organized guide to the queer side of NYC (the one you would write, if you had time), this book is for you. I hope they'll do this for more cities!
- Oh, so chatty and friendly, everything this guide mentions, profiles, or reviews is simply F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S. To read this book is to think that every gay spot in New York is just shy of heaven. Even the biggest dive receives rave reviews. While giving high marks to everything and supposedly being "the authoritative guide to gay & lesbian NYC," it fails to know about new hot spots (particularly in the burgeoning Hell's Kitchen neighborhood). Good for addresses of places only.

4 comments about The Subway Pictures.
- These astonishing digital photographs are witty without being condescending, intimate without being impertinent, and unsentimental without being cold. As Billy Collins writes in his introduction, "These images speak of a boldness associated with reports from the front...." Peter Peter is a Czech and his pictures belong to the photography of discovery brought to New York by such Europeans as Andreas Feininger, Andre Kertesz, Rudy Burckhardt and Robert Frank.
- Nice pics about "true underground people".
If you want to know the "feeling" of NY's subway, this is the book...
- While visiting New York City, I, too, noticed the beauty of people I saw in the subway. What I didn't have was a courage to take pictures because I was afraid that people may not feel comfortable being taken pictures by a stranger like myself. This book is something I wish I could have done, something my dream came ture. Just take a look around while riding subway. You'll be amazed at how beautiful people are.
- It's a great book. A must buy for anyone interested in candid photography. Every picture tells a story and the contrast at times is amazing.

1 comments about Night+Day New York (Pulse Guides Cool Cities Series).
- My girlfriend and I recently picked this up to help with our trip to New York and I have to say it was fantastic. Not your typical guide of typical outdated touristy things to do. It was extremely well written, obviously a lot of care and research was done to put it together. It uncovered some hidden gems and seemed to be really on the cutting edge with what was hip and happening in the city.
I'd totally pick it up if you're looking for some good insight into what New York can really be like. We're also going to look at picking up some other in this series for some other trips that we have planned.
