1 comments about New York's 50 Best Places to Renew Body, Mind, and Spirit: A City and Company Guide (City and Company).
  1. This is the book I have been looking for. Who'd have thought there could be such wonderful opportunities for renewal in NYC? This book really addresses the needs of city dwellers. If you have just a few minutes, a day or a week, you can benefit from the opportunities to turn the stress down that this book offers. And even better you will experience some unique and fascinating sites. It is concise but informative giving all the information needed to go to each place.

3 comments about The Rough Guides' New York City Directions 2 (Rough Guide Directions).
  1. This guide would be fine if you're a Brit or Aussie. But if you're an American and haven't been on the moon for most your life, you'll find lots of advice you don't really need. For example, most Americans pretty much know what constitues an America breakfast or what are restaurants are like in general. Plus, the guide doesn't list many actual restaurants or hotels and there are no maps (which may be because my version was an e-book). Still, the insights are very interesting to read and you'll have a good feel for the City if you've completed the book before you arrive.

  2. I rated this one star because it was not what I wanted. I wanted to purchase the Rough Guide to New York City but ordered The Rough Guides' to New York City DIRECTIONS by mistake. I was fooled because they both have the exact same picture of the front cover and a similar name and the two books did not appear on the same search results page. They are different in size but that is not apparent when ordering on-line. The thumbnail picture of the directions appears to be that of the guide. The directions book is a lot of maps. The knew guide was excellent because I had a copy from the library. Having both is probably a good if you are going to do much walking.

  3. The picture shown is the full Rough Guide, however, this listing is for Rough Guide Directions. I have both books and both are very good. The Directions version is simply a smaller version of the full Rough Guide. Both books contain very good maps and listings. The Directions version omits a lot of the historical items that are in the full Rough Guide. The nice thing about Directions is that it is small enough to carry in a back pocket or purse. The Rough Guide is much larger and heavier.

2 comments about Manhattanville: Old Heart of West Harlem (NY) (Images of America).
  1. Mr. Washington has managed to summarize the rich, diverse history of a small yet fascinating section of the northern half of Manhattan which has consistently been ignored by virtually all writers on urban culture. His prose is terse and informative, and his photographs are truly stunning to anyone familiar with this neighborhood. This concise book is a precious piece of primary historical research which provides evidence on every page of the thought and effort that went into its creation. Whether you live in this neighborhood (as I have for twenty years) or are simply interested in the social and economic evolution of urban areas, this volume will provide you with a living, breathing history of an incredibly diverse slice of a continually evolving city. I urge you to read this fascinating tale of a truly unique part of our city and country.

  2. Today, this neighborhood is mostly ignored. Who knew it had such a complex history? This book has great photographs. I live nearby. The web site morningside-heights.net has some pictures of this neighborhood.

2 comments about Field Guide to the Piedmont: The Natural Habitats of AmericaÕs Most Lived-in Region, From New York City to Montgomery, Alabama (Chapel Hill Books).
  1. Field Guide to the Piedmont is a magnificent, vividly described journey through the Piedmont, a unique ecosystem which stretches from the Hudson River Palisades to the Georgia plateau. The theme of succession dominates and illuminates the book, while Godfrey's literary descriptions of the landscapes reads like a Southern, landlocked Melville. I have used this book as my guide to understanding the ecology of where I live - a fundmental gift, and thank you, Michael Godfrey. I write about this at RaleighNaturalist.com. I highly recommend this book.

  2. I'm just about a third of the way though the book. It is very informative, but also enjoyable and accessible to one not very knowledgeable about the topic. Browsing though Amazon and the local bookstore a few times in years past, I have looked for broad-based books such as this to help me understand the area I live in. This book does that better than any I've come across.

3 comments about Jazz Guide New York City.
  1. As a jazz fan, drummer and bandleader who's listened around Manhattan for 28 years and played around Manhattan for 16 years, I'm very impressed with this book. It's extremely well researched, the production quality is high, and the quality of the writing is so good that it makes an interesting read apart from its functionality as a guidebook. My only reservation is that it leaves out a couple of obvious jazz clubs and includes some non-jazz clubs. But that aside, I'm astonished at how much the author knows about his subject, and how much I was able to learn that I didn't already know. Very highly recommended.

  2. If you're planning to check out some jazz in NYC, my advice is simple: get this book. Dollar knows his stuff, and the book is so smartly written that it's worth a read even if you don't know the difference betweeen Bill Evans and Gil Evans. And if you're into cutting-edge jazz, you'll find some destinations here that will send you to postbop heaven.

  3. A great resource for the conoisseur as well as the jazz illiterate (like me!). This book is a terrific guide to some fabulous joints, and is fun to read, too. Well done!

  1. A must for anyone trying to get the most out of New York. A real owner's manual for the city. You no longer need to ask your friends for all those tips; they are all available in this book.

  2. This handy paperback has everything from where to get your sewing machine repaired to how to buy flowers wholesale to the best dog walker services to the phone number for your neighborhood council. When I need to get something done here in NYC, this is the book I open. It's becoming a bit dated but is still the source for concise information that you need in your daily life. Can't believe this is out of print!

  3. I bought this book 6 years ago when I moved from LA to NYC. It was a valuable guide, and I stil;l reference it from time to time for information about the city.
