3 comments about Jazz Guide New York City.
- As a jazz fan, drummer and bandleader who's listened around Manhattan for 28 years and played around Manhattan for 16 years, I'm very impressed with this book. It's extremely well researched, the production quality is high, and the quality of the writing is so good that it makes an interesting read apart from its functionality as a guidebook. My only reservation is that it leaves out a couple of obvious jazz clubs and includes some non-jazz clubs. But that aside, I'm astonished at how much the author knows about his subject, and how much I was able to learn that I didn't already know. Very highly recommended.
- If you're planning to check out some jazz in NYC, my advice is simple: get this book. Dollar knows his stuff, and the book is so smartly written that it's worth a read even if you don't know the difference betweeen Bill Evans and Gil Evans. And if you're into cutting-edge jazz, you'll find some destinations here that will send you to postbop heaven.
- A great resource for the conoisseur as well as the jazz illiterate (like me!). This book is a terrific guide to some fabulous joints, and is fun to read, too. Well done!

2 comments about Hagstrom New York City 5 Borough Atlas (Hagstrom New York City Five Borough Atlas).
- This comment is not only to say how well priced this easy to read map is- it is also to praise Amazon for their wonderful and fast customer service; the map arrived slightly damaged; customer service immediately sent a new one, without even waiting for the damaged one to be returned, for which we did not have to pay postage (which is only fair here!)
" They" ( customer service) continue to be top notch in all aspects, which makes me a devoted Amazon customer.
- This atlas replaced my 1989 atlas. The new atlas has maps which are clearer, and the book contains more information than the old edition. Both of these rate a plus. But the pages are printed on much thinner paper than the old edition. The book is spiral bound and the pages tear easily. Thinner paper means the book will wear out quickly, which is disappointing.

5 comments about Savvy in the City: New York City: A "See Jane Go" Guide to City Living.
- Although I loved this guide and read through it a couple of times, many of the places mentioned were actually closed. On a recent trip to the city, 4 out of the 5 places we tried to find to eat were non existant. I wish they would come out with a new edition, and if they do, I would purchase it.
Just make sure you call ahead if you plan on going anywhere mentioned in this book, to make sure it still exists and hasn't relocated.
- The book is great for the most part. I loved that it had maps in the first few pages and it had some reccomendations I had not seen in other New York books. However, it did not mention as to whether it was cheap, middle of the road or expensive.
- This book will make you declare which Sex and the City character YOU want to be! Forget man hunting in Manhattan ... take on New York on your OWN TERMS! Single and Free without baggage (except a carry-on NOT a kid) is the way to travel in and out of the Bright Lights of the Big City that only is New York. Take a bite out of the Big Apple today! If you can make it there you can make it anywhere - it's up to you New York New York!
- This book, designed for the large-living single woman, is full of light, sisterly descriptions of some of the most indulgent spots in New York. They are lots of fun to read and provoke wild imaginings of frozen hot chocolate and long massages and all the many (expensive) pleasures of this wonderful city. The listings are also useful if you live in the city or are planning a visit--some of the places mentioned are truly great, often underappreciated spots. Each section contains "Not to Miss", a list of the runners-up, also great. And after some listings the authors write "Psst..." and give an insider tip.
The problems are as follows: this book is very clearly written for women in a specific, Sex and the Cityesque niche. Though people outside this niche can certainly benefit from the suggestions, they will find the language (which doesn't go a page without mentioning weight management or how to get your boyfriend to propose) perhaps less amusing. It's also poorly edited, with some spelling and grammatical issues and not-always-excellent writing. Some reviews are too short and say nothing useful (one review for Me Kong, a restaurant, reads, "Innovative yet simple Vietnamese in disappointing portions but at satisfying prices. Probably not chic enough for the terrain, but enjoyable all the same"). There is also the problem, as another reader mentioned, of the organization. The scatterbrained quality makes this book useful only as an idea bank for when fancy strikes, and not as a resource for looking up things you actually need. I worry that this book is not exhaustive, either--where, for instance, is H&H, widely-accepted home of the best bagel in New York? It seems that by reading New York magazine you could get, for a lower cost (or free online), the same sort of reviews as are in this book.
But if you can deal with these things and still want a cute, witty, stylish guide to New York, this book is a good option. Most of all it's fun to read and will provide you with hours of dreamy pleasure. And it would make a great gift!
- dated and these authors never did an update....things change and they just move on to the next city...good reason it is now out of print...savvy in this case means ripping you off

3 comments about Best Hikes With Dogs: New York City & Beyond.
- This delightful work is the latest in a series of books titled "Best Hikes with Dogs." Other areas previously covered include: Oregon, Colorado, New Jersey, Arizona, North Carolina, Las Vegas, and many more. The author has chosen 55 trails in the New York City, Long Island and Hudson Valley region suitable for canine expeditions. I was pleased to find that two of the hikes were in my town of Yorktown. I was really surprised to see the John Hand Park as one of them. Most Yorktowners have never heard of it or Blinn Road where the trail begins.
The author is careful to select trails that are not too strenuous. For instance, her Hudson Highlands hike keeps to the valley between Mt. Taurus (Bull Hill) and Breakneck Ridge. Undoubtedly, the thousand-foot peaks along the Hudson River would be no problem for Lady, the dog who led me to the summit of Colorado's Mt. Princeton at 14,197 feet. For more difficult routes in this area, I agree with the author's recommendation of the "New York Walk Book."
Each trail is well described along with the history of the area. Directions to the trailheads and parking areas are clear. Maps and altitude cross sections are provided for each hike. The book is filled with photos of the scenery, people, and, of course, happy dogs.
- I bought this book because a) I love hiking and being outdoors and b) I have two lively dogs that I want to take on day trips with me. This book is part of a series which I had heard great things about from fellow dog owners.
The author gives alot of detail about each trail. They are carefully mapped out and she lists hiking must-have's for humans and dogs alike. The trails are rated by difficulty levels and most of the hikes seem easy to moderate. The photos included are beautiful and really inspire you to get out into nature with your dog! We have already walked a trail that was listed for one of our local parks. I plan on doing many more, in different places, throughout the summer. I think this book is great for all those interested in hiking and bringing your canine companion along for exercise and an enjoyable day away from the city.

Tammy McCarley owns Blue Sky Dogs, a dog travel and adventure company based in New York City. She, her dog Sienna and her husband have hiked the 55 trails described in this excellent guide book. The trails are in the five boroughs, on Long Island, and in the lower Hudson Valley. All of the trail heads are within three hours driving distance from Manhattan, and many are reachable by public transportation.
McCarley's book contains a quick reference guide to the 55 hikes, checklists for humans and dogs, a very comprehensive Appendix on removing ticks and tick borne diseases. Undoubtedly reflecting her experiences with her travel company, McCarley places heavy emphasis on dog health and safety. The first aid kit contains over twenty items, including a muzzle or a towel that can be used as a muzzle. Particularly impressive: she lists the emergency 24 hour veterinary hospital closest to the trailhead.
She has taken great care to choose routes that offer water and shade over the entire route. She lists no hikes in Nassau County because none of its parks permit dogs on trails. Most of the parks in the book have specific rules for dogs, which she spells out at the start of each trail.
The text is filled with black and white drawings and photographs that enhance the excellent trail descriptions. Head notes for each hike give distance, estimated time, difficulty, high point, elevation gain, facilities, maps, regulations, websites, emergency vet services, and how to get there. There is a neat profile schematic showing the rise and fall of elevation, and quite good thumbnail maps of each hike.
As a long time hiker in the region, I know that many of the organized hiking leaders do not welcome dogs. McCarley, of course, is in the business of providing such leadership. Whether you go with McCarley, or go alone with your dog, McCarley's book is a splendid guide.

3 comments about The Big Onion Guide to New York City: Ten Historic Tours.
- Whether you are a native New Yorker or a tourist visiting New York City for the first time, you need to pick up a copy of The Big Onion Guide To New York City.
Big Onion has established itself as the leading walking tour company in New York City for over 10 years. And for good reason. Their guides are American history graduate students who know and love the city. Big Onion's first guide book is loaded with interesting facts and stories about the city's history. Their easy-to-follow self-guided tours will delight tourists exploring the city's streets and enlighten even native New Yorkers who think they know everything about their hometown. I'm constantly using this book as a reference book to look up facts about New York history. In my opinion, two of the best tours are the Lower East Side, with its tales of immigrant life, and Central Park, which the book calls New York's "greatest public space." There is even a driving tour (which I haven't tried yet) for those who want to explore New York's "outer boroughs." The book is concise, well-written and always informative. It's a must-have for anyone interested in New York City history.
- We just came back from NYC and went on one of the walking tours in this book--guided by the author Eric Wakin (Ethnic Eating Tour of Chinatown and Little Italy). Mr Wakin took us into Chinatown and discussed how the area is a living, breathing, working neighborhood, filled with shops, pushcarts, and restaurants that cater to the neighborhood's residents. We then walked into Little Italy and noticed how the neighborhoo is nothing but restaurants designed to attract tourists. Quite a contrast. Mr Wakin discussed how the neighborhoods have changed over the centuries as the older, more established immigrants move out and new immigrants (often of a different ethnic background) come in. The author was knowledgeable about his facts and history and the the different food tidbits were a real treat!
- Here's everything you ever wanted to know about Manhattan in a breezy presentation of facts and intimate history about the Big Apple.

- I purchased this for my great niece who just moved to New York. I've
bought Mr. Frank's book in past editions, probably 3. He comes out with
a new book every year. When some girl friends and I went to N.Y. I bought
the '84 edition, eventually the '87 and "89 editions. They were our Bible
and everything we tried from the book lived up to Mr. Frank's recommendations. So I thought my great niece should have a copy also.
She said the day it arrived she stayed up until 3 a.m. reading it.
