- I found this very helpful in picking a hotel in New York. It seems thorough and well-organized. Some funny reviews, too.
- As a veteran traveler I have always thought I pretty much knew a lot about various hotels in NYC. After getting a copy of this book I realize I did not know as much as I did. It is very helpful to anyone visiting New York City. Charles Suisman and his staff have meticulously rated 250 hotels from 5 star to near flop houses. A grand hotel like Four Seasons gets a rave. A bad hotel is spanked liked a naughty child. It isnt just a dry review of these establishments. He also interjects a lot humor. He awarded the Basil Fawlty Award for Inhospitality to the manager of the Hampshire Hotel and Suites. It is well researched. While the rates are the year 2000 it isn't difficult to figure out what they currently would be. It has 2 kinds of indexes...by type of hotel/inn and alphabetically with the rating so as to save you time. Before you check in to another New York hotel read this book. You won't regret it!!!

1 comments about Shecky's Apartment Rental Guide: New York City 2005.
- I recently bought a used copy to guide my search for no-fee apartments in Manhattan. I was a little wary since it was published in 2005, but I found it to be a rather accurate compilation, which was easier than trolling no-fee websites. The guide is 214 pages and is broken into three parts.
1. 2-3 page overview (basic deomographics, atmosphere, good restaurants, etc). of neighborhoods in Manhattan and some neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn.
2. Basics of getting an apartment. How a broker works. Why you might need a guarantor, etc.
3. The actual listings (75 pages) of no-fee buildings categorized by neighborhood.
I ended up going out with some brokers to look at places, some of which are listed as no-fee in this guide. Essentially, the brokers would try to get you to pay a hefty broker's fee for an apartment you could get without the fee. I was also moving with a dog and was disappointed that the guide only had a few listings for pet-friendly buildings.
Overall, a good guide to no-fee buildings that may be particularly useful for out-of-towners looking to move to NYC.

- Definitely this is a good book to start reading about this marvelous city. With lots of attractions, restaurant and affordable hotels listed by neighborhood you will never get lost. A very close approach is not easily found in many books, well this is the exception.
