1. The word selection and wit of Jay Jacobs mark him as potentially the most literate of the food critics of the last quarter of the 20th century. Jacobs was able to obtain the signature recipes of the best dishes of the greatest NYC chefs. I will never sell my copy since the great repository of formulas could be lost should its owners not attend to the disposition of this work.

1. Time Out publishes a superior dining guide that includes enough quirky categories to satiate the adventurous. Whenever we get together in a large group, we always consult our Time Out NY guide. For such small blurbs, the writing really captures the spirit of restaurant, the best flavors, and the occasional downfall. Guide includes a section on Dive Bars and encompasses Brooklyn and Queens. Time Out's writing is geared toward 20somethings to 40somethings, though its picks certainly encompass all ages. Personally, I find Time Out more reliable than Zagat ratings. Possibly because personal opinions seem more readily available.
   
   Incidentally, the London Time Out guide was one of the first things my husband's sister pulled out when she was looking for a restaurant to take us out to in London.

1. Among my four New York City travel guides, this is my favorite. The information is well organized and is presented clearly and concisely in a warm conversational style.

   New York City for Families is brimming with practical tips to make your visit to NYC easier, safer, and a lot more fun. Throughout the book you are shown "how to" make sure you enjoy the uniqueness of NYC. Larry Lain colorfully describes many special things and places for you to enjoy about NYC, such as trying Chinatown's luscious lichee nut ice cream, visiting famous NYC presidential places, or buying Broadway tickets at big discounts.

   Although there are perspectives tremendously helpful to families with young children, there's also considerable pragmatic info that will be invaluable to persons of any age. Though I've been in NYC dozens of times, I was surprised at Lain's many streetwise insights I didn't know.

   From beginning to end, it's loaded with great tips for saving you money. His advice on accommodations is wonderful and can save you many times the cost of the book.

   One of the special strengths of New York City for Families is the inclusion of extensive information on all five boroughs, not just Manhattan: "If you insist, like most tourists, to remain in Manhattan, you're going to miss a lot of cool stuff."

   Lain's strategic approach for thinking through all the aspects of your trip and skillful advance planning is unique and by far the best of any travel guide.

   Just as in Lain's other top-notch travel guides, New York City for Families is continuously updated through the author's web site (listed several places in his book). I checked out the web site. It has a lot of goodies-including extremely detailed info on the latest situations in greater New York City along with updated recommendations.

1. With its useful maps and anecdotal entries, this pocket-sized guide is the perfect companion for a day or a lifetime spent in the New York metropolitan area. It lists location, atmosphere, menu items, tap and bottled beer brands of all the important and some not so important watering holes in NYC and beyond. I never leave home without it. I am constantly making notes and additions to it though as it is slowly become dated. I only pray there is a revised edition on the way.
