- I bought this book so that I would have a resource for visiting friends. It has helped me plan numerous excursions as it lists the contact info and very often the hours and rates of most popular activities around town. The photography in this book is outstanding as well as the brief historical sections and the restaurant info.
The only thing missing, in my opinion, is better information about where not to walk after dark and other pertinent details. For example, the author mentions that such and such street in the east village is so quaint and should not be missed, but I know that I would not want to be walking there after dark. The book is primarily a "pretty" guide, so if that's the type of guide you're looking for, then it's perfect.
- This is an excellent book. It has everything anyone traveling to New York or even living in New York needs to know.
This book contains maps of everything, including subways. It also takes you from the Villages to the Upper East and West Sides, from Lower Manhattan to Harlem and Central Park. I could never find a better book of New York if I tried. This is a must read for anyone traveling to New York, or just interested of learning about the Big Apple.
- This book is great. I love the walking tours outlined. It gives you a map, tells you how far each tour would be, how long it should take you, and what to stop and see. This pictures and background info on various sites is great and the history is great. I also love the way it's broken down be neighborhood. Many wonderful maps.

- In "Voices After Midnight" Chad,Luke, their older sister Heidi, parents and family dog Al take a vaction from California to New York City. When they arrive there Chad and Luke are hearing voices late into the night-after midnight. This house is a least one hundred years old, are they hearing voices from the past? Heidi is acting stranger by the second, is it becuase of her mom's friends daughter Jocelyn? Or something else? Now everytime Chad and Luke open doors slowly they go back to the past-to 1888, or 1929 or just a couple weeks ago. Soon they start to see the Dunlaps people that lived there over one hundred years ago. Chad is starting to think his brother is right, mabey they do have a gift or better yet a mission. Can Chad and Luke change the past to save the Dunlaps from the bizzard of 1888? When they go to a New Year's Eve party at a very rich family's manor they find their sister-Heidi waltzing with non other than Tyler Dunlap. Then they find out that she is also living in his old bedroom. Tyler can't seem to take his eyes off of her-but he's also asking questions she can't answer. Heidi makes the owners of the house daughter VERY angery at Tyler for waltzing with someone other than her. Luke and Chad are very suprised that Heidi of all people has the gift to travle in time. They're soon to find out that if you're wearing clothes from the past you're visible. Tyler has a younger sister the same age as Chad -Emily, and Chad has a little crush himself. Can Chad,Luke, and Heidi save Emily, and Tyler from freezing in the blizzard of 1888?
- I think that is a good book to read because it is about adventure and science fiction.
It keeps you interested because you don't know what is going to happen until the end. I would recommend that people read this book because if they like science fiction they will like this book.
- This book is about to Brothers. They move to NY and their family rents a town house in New york. Once there he hears voices- late at night, after midnight in this stange house thats at least one hundred years old. As they explore the house, the begin to slip in and out of their own time, back to the winter of 1888...............
I would recoment this book this book for young kids at the ages of 11-14 i think it is a good book because it is adventurous and exciting to read
- Voices after Midnight was the first Richard Peck book I read and out of the ones I have read so far it is the best. I read this first as a kid then again as an adult and I never stopped liking it. The different characters weave in and out of time till they get to the right time and accomplish what they need to do. Also if you like this book I think you might also like Time for Andrew by Mary Downing Hahn.
- This book was one of the worst books I ever read! But the thing I don't like about it is that it's a girl book thing. What this book is about is there are two brothers (Chad, Luke) and an older sister (Heidi). They and their family decide to have a vacation in NY. When they get to NY, they rent a 100 year old townhouse. Chad and Luke hear voices when it is time to go to bed. Soon the two brothers find out that they are hearing sounds of people that are dead. Then one day they find some old clothes, put them on and they can go or see into the past. Then they save these two people named Tyler and Emily who died in 1888 because of a blizzard. Then the kids help Tyler and Emily survive the blizzard from the past. All the stuff about dance, balls, and weddings is sooo girl!

1 comments about Manhattan: A Pictorial Souvenir.
- This book contains great artistic pictures from the greatest city of the world. I used this book in my first trip to NY and it gives a good image of the city main touristic places. Pictures are, as I said, very good, but some do not have good quality. Pictures are sometimes too artistic. However, it is the perfect book for tourist and people who admire great buildings and big cities. Do not consider this book a complete tour guide, because it's not. If you're a tourist, this book helps you decide what places to visit, but it does not contain a classified list of restaurants, etc. If you buy this book, you'll be happy to see beautiful images of the places you've seen on TV. I hope you enjoy this book.

4 comments about Longstreet Highroad Guide to the New York Adirondacks (Longstreet Highroad Series).
- It is obvious that Phil Brown, despite his workmanlike description of nearly every square inch of New York's Adirondack Park, has a passion for the region unmatched by any other expert. His descriptions of trails, waterways and other attractions of the Adirondacks expose his intimate relationship with America's most beautiful environment. This book is all you need to guide your exploration. It is an instant classic.
- Even though I spent my summers as a kid in the Adirondacks this book was a tremendous help in planning a trip back to there after being gone for 20 years. I couldn't believe the things we did that I had never seen within 20 miles over our old summer home! In addition to the help in planning a trip we brought it with us everwhere we went and it helped us get some great ideas on things to do once we got to our initial destinations. Wish they had one for the mountains in VA.
- We make frequent trips to the Adirondacks for family vacations; on the last three, we've had this book in hand and have had a variety of disappointing experiences. Here are some of our complaints:
1) the organization of this book is really confusing. Although the book includes lots of maps, there isn't a great overview of the entire Adirondack region. For example, information on attractions, trails, etc in the Lake Placid area is scattered over several discrete sections. This makes it difficult to plan a day out if you know where you're going to be basing yourself. This book also does a poor job of cross-referencing between the maps and the text.
2) Trail information is to be taken with a grain of salt. One set of directions was so confusing that we ended up giving up, and once we were unable to locate a trailhead at all. The directions given in the guide tend to look very precise (indicating, for example, tenths of a mile), but in the field are not very useful. The descriptions of trails are also not especially useful. The Heart Lake loop at Adirondack Loj, for example, is described as "easy", implying a walk that is friendly for kids, etc. In terms of length (1 mile) this is accurate, but in terms of terrain (lots of root knots in the trail, low lying areas that stay muddy for many days after the rail, some steep inclines/declines) it's not "easy". Although we haven't tried any of the longer trails listed in this book, based on our experience I would be very very wary of using this guide alone to plan an all-day hike anywhere in the Adirondacks.
3) Fees. Although the guide indicates where fees are collected, it does not indicate what specific prices are. The Adirondacks are expensive -- the parking fee at Adirondack Loj (advertised as a good starting point for several walks) is $8 or $9, High Falls Gorge costs almost $10 per adult and $7 per child, etc. -- and the book doesn't do a good job of indicating this to people unfamiliar with the area.
I guess this book is useful as an overview or for someone trying to identify what they might like to see in the Adirondacks. As far as a practical field guide to the area, however, this is only marginally useful. Interested travelers would be advised to do some homework -- especially on trails, even the so-called easy family hikes -- outside of this guide.
- Thankfully my husband and I live in the Adirondacks and have been somewhat familiar with the areas we have hiked. Out of 5 of the places we have hiked from the book, 3 have had wrong directions. The directions for Lyon Mountain say to go 9.3 miles Northwest when it is actually Northeast which brought us in a totally different direction. The campsite to go through at Lake Meachem to get to DeBar Mountain is wrong. The list goes on. It is a confusing book since many maps show mountains to hike, but don't tell how to get to them and some tell how to get to them but don't show them on a map. I will agree that it has given us a lot of ideas on where to hike around us that we didn't know existed. But, I wonder if the author actually hiked to these places.

5 comments about New York: The Photo Atlas.
- After using the internet for aerial views, I had dreamt that such a book would come out. When I saw this book, I had to have it. Beautifully detailed aerial images of ALL NEW YORK CITY! The outer boroughs are included. See your house, or use the book to research the route of mass transit lines. I use the book primarily for that, as I am a train buff. But, if you just want to get a bettrer idea of your neighborhood and your city, you must get this book. Thick, glossy pages, and made wonderfully. Kudos to whover allowed this book to be released, especially in these times we live in.
- The first thing I did was to look up my daughters house in Astoria. It was there. And I've always wondered what the streets between the Port Authority Bus Terminal and the tunnel to New Jersey looked like. And in crossing from Staten Island to New Jersey on the Outerbridge Crossing it looks like there are a couple of sunken ships just to the north of the bridge. You only get a moment to look before the railing blocks the view. They're pictured here too, page 306.
This spectacular book consists of aerial photographs of the entire city of New York. Photographed in color from a height of 5,500 feet, during the summer of 2003, on perhaps the clearest day in history; the photographs are both beautiful and current. Combined with the photographs are standard maps that serve as a reference to the photographs. Finally there's an index of streets that will take you to either the maps or photographs.
It's clear that the people putting this together had a pretty good idea about how to do such a book, and it shows.
- The book is complete and unique, in that it depicts all of Manhattan as well as the other boroughs. Still, it was a bit of a disappointment, especially after reading the other reviews. The book could have been much more user-friendly with two changes.
* The aerial photographs are laid out according to latitude and longitude. For Manhattan, this means all plates feel "crooked" and disorienting in comparison to the usual layout on street maps. It also means that you need to flip more between pages to see certain sections of town in their entirety.
* The book has two separate sections: photos and street maps. The maps would have been more helpful if they had been displayed on the opposite page of their corresponding aerial photos. That way they could serve as a legend to the photos.
The book is so large and heavy, I suspect the shipping costs would mean it is hardly worth returning, which is my main reason for keeping it. But if you want to look at New York from up above, there are a number of existing books that are far more fun, even if they are not quite as complete as this one.
- I was full of excitement when this book came out and immediately ordered one. The major focus of the book is on Manhattan and important places like Statue of Liberty and airports where they're shown at a larger scale than residential neighborhoods.
1. Not so important areas are shown at about 1/5 the scale in comparison to the scale shown for Manhattan.
2. Another disappointing fact is that these images are almost seamlessly patch together with computers. Because of this, the different perspective views of two images patched next to each other made me dizzy and uneasy looking at it closely.
3. Larger scale print outs of any one area are available for purchase, but they cost more than the book itself.
4. Overall, although somewhat disappointing it is nonetheless a great book to have and keep as a photo record of New York from above.
- i live in Manhattan, and i wanted a coffe table book for my new apt. i thought this book would be a great photography book showing manhattan in its entirety ... this book accomplishes the goal, but just doesnt work. it is extremely difficult to find a location in this book (for example, the block you live on now), b/c the aerial shots are just too high up. i was especially disappointed that i wasnt able to identify streets or smaller buildings. yes, it shows all of Manhattan BUT it doesnt do this in a way that is fun to look at OR user-friendly.
i would 100% recommend that someone look at this in a book store before buying.
