  1. Stunning photography and excellent writing. If only I had the money to visit all these places. I hope they write about other cities.

  2. This book revives a romantic vision of New York that has been forgotten. It offers intimate insight into wonderful corners of space in New York. The writing is clever and descriptive and the full-page bleed photographs are dramatic and stunning.

  3. The photographs are breath-taking, the writing a pleasure in itself, a perfect coffee table book, a very well put together guide that provides a lot of intresting places to try out in NYC

  4. Armed with my copy of this book and The RoMANtic's Guide, my wife and I were off to New York for a special romantic weekend. I couldn't have done it without these two books. My wife was amazed at the places we saw, slept and ate.

  5. This was by far the worst quality purchase of the thousands of dollars in purchases i've made through amazon in the last few months. Once I removed the shipping plastic around the book and turned the first page, the binding on the package immediately cracked releasing the papers from the book. Plus theres only like 50 pages in this book total with various headings. The content is ridiculously elementary in the suggestions contained. A google search would have resulted in better reccomendations then were contained in this book. I can not emphasize enough what a wasted purchase this is.

  1. The book is so well laid out and easy to follow. It made finding a garage near our appointment location super simple. The format also let us pick and choose which garage to use based on cost and safety. Additional features like extra charge for SUV and the full range of rates helped us also make a choice based on finances instead of guessing like in the past.

  2. This book is a fantastic resource for anyone that drives in New York City. If you're sick of overpaying for parking and tired of wasting time circling the block looking for a space, you will be thrilled with this guide to all of the parking garages in New York City. Find the best deals and the most convenient spots near your destination and learn how to avoid getting ripped off.

  3. I've had to park twice in Manhattan in the last month and saved 10 dollars both times by using Park It. It also helps knowing where you are going to park so you can drive straight there.

  1. When my family moved to the Hudson Valley, we had heard about its agricultural resurgence but it was difficult to find out where to go and who was growing and producing what. Jan Greenberg's book has been a wonderful source for the freshest, just-picked fruits and vegetables. We now buy most of our meat and poultry locally as well. We know that we are eating food that not only tastes good but is grown and raised in a way that makes us feel good about eating it. We also like being able to tell our children the stories about the farmers who raise the food that we are eating. All in all, this is a great resource.

  2. We bought this book before heading up to the Hudson Valley and it proved to be invaluable. When we weren't visiting sites like the Roosevelt Museum and Vanderbilt Mansions, we stopped at many of the farms mentioned in the book. All of the farmers knew Jan Greenberg and treated us like old friends. We returned to New York with a hamper full of food which we enjoyed for days afterwards. A book like this is certainly different from your standard guidebooks and gave us a special dimension to our visit to the Hudson Valley.

  1. This second in a series of "Adirondack Ghosts" provides much more of the same type of fascinating and frightening material as the first book. Told much in the same style as the first with folklore and modern day ghost experiences mixed, the author continues to delight the reader.

Once again we have tales of poltergeists, but the main emphasis seems to be on the actual witnessing of ghosts. The beautiful area of Lake George contains the history of the Sagamore Resort, where a cook experienced a ghost speaking to him just before it passed through his body. He immediately resigned. A young boy who collected golf balls was killed by a car. His ghost is frequently seen on the greens to this day. A manor house called the "Tratelja" has stories of a woman who appears in full-bodied apparition and speaks to houseguests. In Glens Falls at St. Mary's Church, a man finds the doors locked and upon peering through the window, witnesses activeley worshiping churchgoers - all have been dead, including the priest.

Some of the stories are eerie and others are terribly sad. Regardless, this is a nice companion piece to the first "Adirondack Ghosts" book and continues the history of ghosts in the Adirondacks, a much needed and appreciated subject for this beautiful and historic area.

  1. This is treat for anyone interested in photography, especially in the period leading up to Winogrand, Friedlander, etc. Most of the photographs in this book, I've never seen before. Included are interesting 35mm work by Diane Arbus, some untypical Avedon, great Robert Frank's that I haven't seen published anywhere else, early Winogrand. However the really nice thing about this book is in being able to see the work of those lesser known, but nonetheless great, photographers such as Leon Levinstein, Louis Fauer, Alexi Brodovitch, and many more. Also includes a thorough and informative essay as well as individual profiles on the artists involved.

  2. I agree that this is a great collection of photographs, many either never or seldom published before, and supported by interesting and original text. It is amazing how little biographical information exists on so many photographers. I bought the book because it encompassed so many of my photographic heroes and introduced me to some photographers I was not familiar with. But the reason I decided to actually write a review here was to correct the previous reviewer who mentions that Gary Winogrand's work is included in the book. It's not. But it sure is nice to see more on the Photo League. What a great group. And it's nice to see their influence so fully recognized. Thank you Ms. Livingston!
