  1. This book makes a wonderful gift for the person with everything. A real treasure for all those who own stocks or those who want to visit NY.

  2. with all the mega mergers going on this may be the last photographic history of the old Wall Street.

  3. This book is a pleasure to read and to keep around for others to enjoy. I keep it on my desk at work so that my visitors can enjoy the incredible photography. The book also gives a unique insight in to the history of the many firms on Wall Street and how consolidation has led to our current list of players. Many find it interesting to see how certain firms came to be what they are today.

One example of an interesting foreshadow is that the author has included a picture of the Banker's Trust building reflecting off of a Deutsche Bank conference room table. The two frims merged several years after the photo was taken.

Since buying this book I now enjoy walking around lower Manhattan. While before I was caught up in the rat race, I know see the beauty of the arcitecture and can better appreciate the history of Wall Street. This book is full of insightful anecdotes which lead to interesting stories for me to share.

This book is a must for anyone who works in the finacial world for its insight and to keep around for others to enjoy.

I was happily surprised when I saw one of the authors books on Nantucket while on vacation there. I bought the book and was again happily surprised at its combination of photography and narration. I would rate Nantucket Island five stars as well.

  4. This is a holiday gift to open more than once. Beautiful! Useful! Fuses text and illustrations in a way that enriches both!

  5. i saw this book at a financial advisor's office and immediately came home and purchased it. it is a fabulous melding of text and photography, beautifully rendered. if you have visited this part of new york, you will enjoy the memories....if you have not been there yet, look at this before you go and it will greatly enrich your experience.

  1. Finally a guide for the traveler (who happens to be gay) which provides just the perfect amount of culture, local insight, history, places to eat, sleep, shop and things to do to round out a wonderful day in NYC. This was like a perfect meal - not too much or little, not to heavy or light, perfect spice...hit the spot.

Loved that it was organized by neighborhood. As I read it, I was reminded of great places I've been...and introduced to a good many to visit. So glad it was not the usual laundry list travel book. The history sections (and I am not a history buff) were a surprising, wonderfully written addition. Please do Chicago next!

  1. You won't learn anything from this book you can'f figure out for yourself by driving by the streams they review. Its a very thin book, and addresses each river quite superficially - its more like a brochure than a comprehensive guide to NY fly fishing waters.

  2. The guide had some good suggestions for my short trip in NY. I only had a a few days to explore a limited number of streams in the capital region and the book gave some useful advise. I am looking forward to my next NY fly fishing trip and plan to consult this guide.

  3. I agree with the previous review, this is a mediocre book. In fact I personally took two of the photos on the cover, as well as most of large trout photos contained in the book, all were caught in New York, but the author gave the photo credits to the owner of a NY tackle shop. So, I really do not trust the written text as being accurate. That said, NY has some of the best fly fishing in the country and I've learned not to give fly shop owners copies of my fishing photos.

  4. I have fished in New York for the past 30 years and have referenced this book numerous times for new places to wet a line. I find it's brief descriptions and accurate accounts of New York's fly waters simple and easy to reference. The author does a wonderful job of covering the state. He has included a few real gems that would be easily overlooked if you didn't read into his subtle suggestions. You find yourself referencing this guide repeatedly once you pick it up. It's a keeper!

  1. I was so excited to get this book when they showed the story on 60 Minutes. The photographs were all taken with a Yashica T4 point and shoot camera, (the point and shoot of choice for most pro photographers)! The pictures are all in black and white too. The pictures are the pulse of New York City from the viewpoint of a New York Cabbie. I love this concept. I love that this man has used a wonderful point and shoot camera (now discontinued...shame on you, Yashica!), and how he photographs the city while driving. He also photographs the passengers (great idea!!). The text is fantastic. It lets you really understand where he is coming from when he took the pictures. What makes this book winderful is this combination of text and photography, and that it is a new struggling artist who makes his living by driving a cab in New York City, a very rough job indeed.

  2. I have never been to the Big Apple, though for as long as I remember, I have always wanted to go there. David Bradford (a taxi-cab driver) captured NYC from his cab window so well that it really "took me there". I got a feel of NYC while I flipped through the pages of his book. His idea to do this is not only inspirational, but brilliant as well. This book makes a perfect coffee table book- highly recommended to anyone who loves New York!

  3. a book of photographs (and some prose) done by a NY taxi cab driver. all the photos were shot with a point and shoot camera, while he was driving his cab.

a great example of how a body of work is equal to more than the sum of the parts. in other words, the individual images are not necessarily masterpieces, but when you put them all together, the body of work could definitely be exhibited in a gallery. goes to show you that to be a successful artist, a concise body of work is more important then successful individual images alone.

also, this book is a great example of taking one's circumstances and surroundings and creating something artistic from them. there's room for creativity everywhere, especially for photographic creativity.

and in it, the author transcends what might be an ordinary job into something extraordinary. like a bumble-bee buzzing throughout the city, Braford in his cab with camera in hand shows us that in the wake of the events of 9/11/2001 (in fact, the World Trade Center buildings are in many of his shots), NYC is a city full of vitality, life, and soul.

as a published photographer myself, and someone who has not yet spent much time in New York, i really appreciate this book. it's one man's view of the city, yes. but he has such a great vantage point as part of the livelyhood of it.

  4. As you can see from the other reviews, David Bradford is a one of a kind, true artist who deserves all the respect he gets. I had the pleasure of boarding his cab back in 1997 which led me to make a short film on him for my NYU film school project. David has access to some of the most incredible scenes of New York as he drives through the city year round and at all hours with his camera. His photographs catch the subtle changes in light, weather, and emotion of the city. And he sees it from the street level behind the steering wheel. I am honored to be his friend and this book to me is as exciting as the work Andreas Feininger did of New York city during the 30's and 40's.

  5. Excellent book, I saw this guy on a news program and had to have the book. He is one with the city for sure.

  1. If you paddle whitewater in the northeastern United States, or intend to, this should be the first guide you purchase. Bruce has updated and extended Ray Gabler's venerable "New England White Water River Guide", greatly improving on that classic. You can supplement it with volumes of the AMC's state-by-state "river guide" series, which have information on many less interesting rivers, but there's enough here for a lifetime of delightful paddles.

  2. Bruce Lessels did a nice job of augmenting Gabler's original work. This book will replace my dog-eared copy of Gabler's book in a place on honor on the backseat of my car. The extended depth and recent scouting updates on the river included within are great. My only complaint is that the pictures included in the book are not contained on the same pages of the river being reviewed. All-in-all a worthwhile purchase.

  1. Mere verbal accounts simply do not hold the impact of photographs in visualizing the changes that time wroughts upon the creations of men. "Lost Waterfront: The Decline And Rebirth Of Manhattan's Western Shore" is an 80-page catalog of full-color photographs taken by Shelley Seccombe between 1972 and 1982 that showcase what a decade has seen transpire among the buildings and shorelines of Manhattan's Hudson River shoreline. The transformation from a booming commercial trade, to its decline, to the reclamation of a devastated area as an impressive and valued public space as a waterfront esplanade with four miles of renovated piers and grassy upland areas is a visual tour-de-force that not only serves as a memorial to what has been accomplished, but also as a template that other similarly blighted areas of other cities can accomplish. "Lost Waterfront" is highly recommended and ultimately inspirational reading.
