  1. I got this book for Christmas and it makes you wanna book a flight to the big apple right away !!

There's another 360° about London that is also very good.

  2. I bought this book as a gift to a Chilean family I will be staying with this summer. I chose it because, other than captions, there is very little writing and because the pictures are gorgeous and varied. I liked it because it gave a good taste of New York -- yes, there is a picture of the Crystler Building, the statue of liberty, but there are also pictures of Dylan's Candy Bar, the Tiffany's on Fifth Avenue, etc.

  1. The ultimate source. Excellent.
For anyone who wants/needs to know
what happened: when, where and who
in The Village. Crtammed full of facts
    and great stories, well-researched.
    Highly recommended.

  2. Originally, Greenwich Village was settled by the rich and merchant class of lower Manhattan as an escape from the recurring ravages of yellow fever and cholera. For this reason Greenwich Village was, essentially, never really mapped out; never really settled in accordance to any public plan. Perhaps this haphazard beginning is what gave the area its combined refined yet anarchic flavor that exists until this day.

And this was also the reason for the area becoming attractive to free-thinkers, tourists, bohemians and artists. Complete with maps, illustrations and walking tours of the Village, Terry Miller's "Greenwich Village and How It Got that Way" reveals the extraordinary history and the historic people who made the place their homes. Artists Jackson Pollack and Edward Hopper, poets Edna St. Vincent Millay and Walt Whitman, playwright Eugene O'Neill, and novelist Willa Cather, are just a few of the famous names who lived and created work here, as they created something uniquely American.

"Greenwich Village and How It Got That Way" is a great book for people who will visit the village, and is great for New Yorkers, themselves, to learn about this neighborhood that they thought they knew so well.

Rocco Dormarunno, author of The Five Points

  1. This is a thoroughly enjoyable guide book. It was invaluable in helping us plan and enjoy our week in the Hudson Valley. It is so well written and the descriptions of restaurants, attractions and inns are so personal that it inspired us throughout our trip. We enjoyed our tour of the Hudson infinitely more because of the heartfelt enthusiasm that came through from the book's writer.

  2. Bought this first for Saratoga Springs where my daughter attends college. Best that I have found browsing booksellers. Not the greatest travel book but the best available. Best feature is that it is comprehensive for small towns and locations all the way up the Hudson. Quite valuable in looking for stores or eating places in Newburgh, Nanuet, and small towns off the NY Thruway. Indeed, I lost the first copy of the book I bought and purchased a replacement from Amazon.

  1. Time Out publishes a superior dining guide that includes enough quirky categories to satiate the adventurous. Whenever we get together in a large group, we always consult our Time Out NY guide. For such small blurbs, the writing really captures the spirit of restaurant, the best flavors, and the occasional downfall. Guide includes a section on Dive Bars and encompasses Brooklyn and Queens. Time Out's writing is geared toward 20somethings to 40somethings, though its picks certainly encompass all ages. Personally, I find Time Out more reliable than Zagat ratings. Possibly because personal opinions seem more readily available.

Incidentally, the London Time Out guide was one of the first things my husband's sister pulled out when she was looking for a restaurant to take us out to in London.

  1. When I moved to NYC in '93, a friend got me an older edition of this and it was worn to pieces 5 years later when I moved away. I get this for all friends who move there. I'm sure there are other books that serve the same purpose but I'm a big fan of the Lets Go series for all my travels (save for Peru where it is inferior to the Lonely Planet guide).
