  1. Each time I read this book I get a warm feeling when I think of all the immigrants who love and depend on Lady Liberty every day. I am so glad she is "back" on her pedestal at the end of the book.

  2. Liberty's Journey is a moving adventure about the Statue coming to life and seeing all of the states and people she stands for. This book reminds me of the true patroitism, commitment, freedom, and generosity of our democratic America. We take it all for granted. Children can get a real glimpse of who and what our statue stands for through this beautiful story and the brilliant way it was written. The outstanding artwork shows the true Liberty, (all she needed was a personality that relates to the children as well as adults). I think that families, libraries, and schools alike would benefit by adding this work of art to their bookshelves. Liberty's Journey represents the heart of America!

  3. Newsbee, the voice of Book Buzz, an NIE project at The Washington Missourian, has chosen "Liberty's Journey" as a book pick for July. When Liberty takes a walk through bustling cities, into states with amber waves of grain, across vast deserts, she loves what she sees, but Liberty is sadly missed in New York Harbor, so it's back to work for the grand ol' girl who joyfully returns to the isle of Manhattan.
The wonders of America come to life on the pages of this wonderful picture book Book Buzz is proud to suggest.

  4. This book earns a place in our "Hall of Fame." It has been read for 3 years now and memorized time and again. It inspired my [...]to memorize the New Colossus. She was Lady Liberty for Halloween for two years now. The story was very well written in a flowing, poetic, and rhythmical context. It is a great introduction to our nation's beauties, people and spirit. It is also amusing. We have a ticker tape parade every time we read this book! Thank you, Ms. Dipucchio, for giving this treasure to the world.

  1. I found this entire series of books to be disappointing. The writing was average but what really bothered me most is how the stories lacked the sweet innocence of the original series. On doing some research I discovered that parts of the books were based on Rose's diaries. Unfortunately, she was not a happy soul and these books suffer from her same pessimism. The listed author for this book (MacBride) died before the last few books were published. The books were still published under his name and HarperCollins claimed that he wrote the manuscript before dying yet one of the last books in this series contains several chapters (almost verbatim) from a story that Rose wrote herself for an adult audience. The story is totally out of character with the series. Rose and her friend sneak out for several nights to meet a traveling salesman. He eventually makes a pass at her...

This series is okay as light reading for adolescents but if you are looking for a piece of americana, and/or a wholesome book for your child or self this is not the best choice. It grossly fails to live up to the original series of books. The Caroline series is a better choice.

  2. I love THE LAURA INGALLS YEARS and the ROSE YEARS. In the later ROSE books, Rose is a little more fiesty and romantical...it builds up as the series goes along, so this is more for pre-teens and teens later on. Otherwise it is very wholesome and fun; Rose is interesting, and has many ideas about the world! I have all the LAURA YEARS books except THE FIRST FOUR YEARS and all the ROSE books except ON THE BANKS OF THE BAYOU (my fave) and BACHELOR GIRL (haven't read that yet).
    ...

  3. In the Land of the Big Red Apple is a GREAT book! Rose begins to adjust to her new home in Missouri at Rocky Ridge Farm. She gets a new donkey named Spookendyke for her ninth birthday, a huge ice storm hits, she gets to celebrate her first real Christmas in the Ozarks, and her parents bulid a new house.

  4. In the Land of the Big Red Apple is adventurous and suspenseful. Rose and her Mama and Papa moved to Missouri and left her Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Mary, Aunt Carry, and Aunt Grace in De Smet because of a drought. Rose's best friend was Alva. Alva hated town girls. Rose's Papa had a hired hand. His name was Abe. Abe lived in a rented shack with his little brother Swiny. Abe and Swiny's mother and father had died. They met Abe when Papa caught Swiny stealing some of Mama's eggs. The next morning Abe came by to apologize. Then they harvested the last harvest. Then Mama and Rose baked and cooked for Thanksgiving. They invited the Coolys over for supper. The last thing Mama put on their plates was three kernels of corn to remind them of the Pilgrims. Then they said grace. After they ate Rose told Paul and George about a cave, but she wasn't allowed to go in it. Paul said, "They wouldn't know if we do so let's go." They went inside the cave and got really muddy. They got in big trouble when they got back. It was time to go back to school. Rose saw Blanche, her school friend. Rose's Papa came and picked Rose up from school. Papa said, "Why Rose you're lips are blue and you're shivering." When Rose got home he said, "Go sit by the fire." Soon it was Rose's birthday! Mama kept looking out the window but wouldn't let Rose. When it was time for chores her Mama wouldn't let her do her chores. When Papa came inside he said, "Go outside and have a look." There was a donkey outside with a new saddle! A little while after Rose's birthday was a terrible ice storm! It was hard getting around. You had to put cloth on your shoes. Their orchard barely made it. Abe was sparking with Effie, Alva's older sitter. Then Abe asked Effie if she would marry him. Will Effie marry Abe? I recommend this book, because it shows you what it was like when Rose was a little girl compared to now.

  5. Written by the adopted grandson of Laura Ingalls Wilder this book chronicles a year in the life of young Rose Wilder. After their long pilgrimage east from the prairie, the family has survived their first year in the Ozarks, on lthier new place which they name Rocky Ridge Farm. In this 3rd book in the RR series Rose is almost nine, coping with conflicting loyalties to girlfriends (country versus town girls) and feeling the faint stirrings of jealousy. Throughout extremes of weather the Wilders offer a solid foundation of faith and charity toward their less fortunate neighbors. Continuing the girlhood mishaps of Laura's own life in the Little House books Rose amuses and entertains readers while learning valuable lessons about life, for human interaction is similar
regardless of geographic environment. Tenderly cared for by her devoted parents, nurtured in faith, hope and compassion she will surely blossom as gloriously as the young apple orchard they cherish.

  1. I am very glad I bought this book, but for the lessons I learned unintentionally.

You see, I bought it hoping to learn more about the (relatively) new and beautiful mosque and cultural center in Manhattan's upper east side. Living in the Seattle area, I knew it would be a while before I got to see that mosque myself (and I was fortunate to finally get there last November).

The book was apparently published before that mosque was completed, because there was little I can recall in the book about it.

But I was truly pleased to read how Muslims in New York have created their own spaces and mosques in places that were not originally meant to be so holy.

Imagine living in a place where the means to worship as you want are so restricted... I thought about being an early Christian in Rome, or a Jew in Europe throughout much of Christian history, or even an adherent of Shinto in North America (where there is only one shrine... luckily near my home).

This book taught me more than I thought I wanted to know, and I am very grateful. I recommend reading it, as well as a visit to the new mosque on 93rd Street. Both are testaments to the power of faith.

  2. The New York Masjid lends an astounding glimpse into the lens of the diverse and fast growing Muslim populous of this eclectic metropolis known as New York City.

The photographer takes the reader on an pictorial reminder into the varying degrees of the Masjid structures that are scattered throughout the five boroughs, which not only serves to shatter the preconceived idea of the Masjids always being these architectural wonders often found in majority Muslim countries (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Senegal, etc), but also displays the dedication of these Muslims to erect a house devoted to the worship of Allah. The masjids of New York rather are mostly converted warehouses, family homes, garages, lofts, apartments, and even backyards, as this book beautifully illustrates.

If you are seeking a look into the ever growing perspective of "Islamic New York", then scroll to the top of the page, and purchase this book immediately

    Peace brothers and sisters!

  1. This fascinating exploration of the interrelationship between the city of New York as an urban center and its portrayal throughout the history of moviemaking is filled with perceptive insight and thoughtful analysis. Highly recommended.

  2. This is a beautifully written book on the portrayal of New York City in the movies. The author is extremely knowledgeable about the architecture of NYC (in fact, he is a New York architect), about the geography and history of NYC, and about film, both in its historical and technical aspects. The writing is imaginative, lyrical, thoughtful, and intelligent--this is a labor of love that took 15 years to complete. If you have any interest at all in New York City or in film, do yourself a favor and buy this book. It made me want to go out and rent at least 60 of the films discussed in it, and it reminded me of many great films set in NYC that I've enjoyed in the past and will want to see again to note some of the characters, themes, landmarks, or stage sets that Sanders describes.

  3. If there was ever a book that really needed to be written, and was then executed nearly flawlessly, this is it. Documenting the multi-threaded releationship of New York City and Hollywood (the movie biz began in NYC, and the studios' financial offices remained there; much of the writing/directing/acting talent came to Hollywood from NYC; Hollywood's backlot NYC was the setting of thousands of films; the ideas of the Hollywood versions eventually changed the real thing; etc.), this is a heckuva fun and interesting read.

Among its most fascinating parts are information on the techniques used to create believable NYC settings by the studios (e.g., the most detail I've ever seen on Hitchcock's enormous Rear Window set), examples of the vast amount of architectural and local-color detail contained in the studio's art department photographic files (more than in some of NYC's museums!), and its general architectural analysis of NYC's major iconic structures: skyscrapers, rowhouses, tenements, train stations, nightclubs, etc.

But of even greater interest are the detailed treatments of how NYC was SHOWN in films (both well-known classics and obscure titles) of different genres and eras, and how the IDEA of NYC affected the world audience, and eventually changed the city itself as new generations flocked to their city of dreams... A flip through the photographs alone is a total pleasure.

This is a great book for film buffs, fans of NYC, architecture students, and those interested in 20th century social history. (I'm all of those things, and I LOVED it!)

  4. If you have an interest in films, architecture or New York City then the purchase of this film is a no-brainer. The book is packed with photographs of movies and film sets that feature the buildings of New York. Another reviewer mentioned the Alfred Hitchcock set shot from the film Rope. I would add the shots from Fountainhead and Week-end at the Waldorf as being special and stunning.

James Sanders said that he spent 15 years writing and researching this book and it shows. His points are well written and quite informative.

I would strongly suggest the hardcover edition for its slightly larger size and the quality of the Knopf binding.

First editions can be purchased used at a very attractive price. Like I said, no-brainer.

  5. How New York is seen (figuratively and literally) by the rest of the world has been influenced more by Hollywood than anything else. James Sanders brilliant "Celluloid Skyline: New York and the Movies" explores the relationship among Gotham, Hollywood, and the rest of the planet. There's a lot here, and a lot of material that has never been presented before.

Each section offers specific insights into the cinematic image of New York: its icons, its myths, its realities. What is also intriguing is how Hollywood's directors manipulated actual city locations to make it look "more like New York". One of my favorite essays has to do with the "domestic" look of New York: its mansions, row houses, and tenements. Also fascinating is the section called "Nighttown"--Hollywood loves the dangerous flavor of New York's streetlife.

This is a marvelous book with a marvelous look. Take one of the other reviewers' advice, however, and get the hardcover. The size makes a big difference.

  1. If you're the type of person who would rather spend money on outstanding food rather than plays and shopping, this book is for you. This tome will take you to the best food in the world.

The coolest part is that you will be walking through "non-tourista" sections of New York that most long time New Yorkers don't know exist!

You can't go wrong with this book. We've used it the last three visits to New York and are still amazed at what we continue to discover!
