1 comments about The New York Book of Shops, 2nd Edition (City and Company).
- This is the new edition of this book. I loved the first so much I had to have the newest one because I didn't want to miss any new shops that had opened since publication of the last edition. I only get to New York once or twice a year so I want to make the most of my time when I am there. The book lists great shops that sell anything from food to jewelry by regions of the city. You can also find out the nearest dry cleaner or shoe repair service in case of an emergency. The author mentions great sites to have a cocktail and take in a breathtaking view of the city. There are sections on the shopping possibilities in the East Village, Soho, Nolita (North of Little Italy), the Village and Meatpacking District, the Lower East Side, the Upper West Side, the Upper East Side, Tribeca, and Brooklyn, in Williamsburg and South Brooklyn. The shops are indexed both alphabetically and by type, so the guide is very easy to use.

5 comments about The Montauk Project: Experiments in Time (Montauk).
- Two weeks before purchasing this book, I first read about the Montauk Project and the other conspiracy theories surrounding it. However, I did not brush them off. On the contrary, I was fascinated by the idea that something like this could have possibly happen. For two weeks, almost daily I read more about Camp Hero and what supposedly went on there. I saw pictures of the base, both before and after. Interestingly enough, I began to believe in what I was reading.
It was at this time that I purchased this book. Shortly afterwards, I was convinced that any secret projects conducted by the US military at Montauk Point were completey fabricated within the minds of Preston Nichols and his constituants. Nichols, who introduces his book as one that could be read by sci-fi fans and scientists alike, definitely throws around his scientific terms throughout the book. But for someone who has spent the majority of his life working in a field that deals with subject matters most people can't even grasp, Nichols writings are surprisingly at a fifth grade level. What's worse is that Nichols spends an unexcusable amount of time going on and on about his investigations into the Montauk Projects rather than his recollections of the project, which are supposedly so vivid that they warrant this book ever being published. This book is unquestionably boring. This comes from someone who was very very interested in the topic and who was starting to believe that the proported truths in this book were real.
They almost had me...
- If you dare to have a open mind to the possibility of time travel, mind control and worm hole travel; this book offers a wealth of intimate and candid first hand accounts of secretive experiments that go beyond the common man's comfort level of what reality is. The powers that have been revealed in this book and demonstrated by covert experiments, have ignited in me, an unquenchable thurst for answers. A truly fantastic journey for the open mind.
- Unlike anything I read, like a book version of Orson Wells War of the World radio program,it is fiction presented so convincingly it will leaving you wondering "Was that fiction or non-fiction?"
- This book enthralled me. I simply could not put it down. What it lacks in literary style it more than makes up for in powerful content. In essence, the authors claim that not only is time travel possible, but a secretive arm of the US government has been researching time travel for over 60 years. What's more, Preston Nichols was an active participant in this research. What is different about this book is that the author explains brilliantly how the dynamics of time travel is facilitated by quantum physics which allows movement into different dimensions. You'll have to read the book.
- I picked this book up several years ago and enjoyed it quite well. I have always liked the whole Montauk Project story and its ties to so many other theories.
This book serves as a good intro to the whole Montauk legend. It is not referenced in the slightest so the reader must take everything at face value and a really should do with more than a grain of salt.
The story itself is facinating. Time travel, ties to WWII, future gold horses and the age old favorite of nazis (these guys are always great villians).
This book is actually the first in a series but the following books by Nichols and his co-author are all enjoyable but somehow lack the page turning fun this volume presents.
My deepest regret was that there is no way to source any of this info and/or learn more about what they touch upon. If even a bit of this is true, the Montauk legend is worth learning about.
I enjoyed this book and I think you will too.

5 comments about City Walks with Kids: New York: 50 Adventures on Foot (City Walks).
- This is a great resource for locals or tourists visiting NY. It's also the perfect hostess gift for savvy parents. A real winner!
- Our family recently returned from a visit to Manhattan. We used 5 or 6 texts as well as this boxed set of walking tours. The set consists of 50 3-3/4 by 5-1/2 inch heavy stock cards and a folding master card that shows all the walks in the context of a five bouroughs map.
There are 3 walks in Central Park, 6 Midtown, none north of the park and 20 south of the Flatiron Building. Four walks cover The Bronx, one is in Queens and 4 in Brooklyn. Each walk card shows a moderately useful map on one side, which does not show all streets but does list subway and bus information as well as web and phone information; on the other side the text points out historic buildings, book stores and museums.
It was very convenient to grab a few cards as we went out the door. There is also information about kid-friendly restaurants, which was very helpful. We also had the City Walks set (for adults) and while there was overlap in areas covered, there was not much in content, which made this worthwhile.
I would definitely buy this set again.
- This is an interesting product, packaged and produced in a very high quality manner. It would be nice, though, if it would also include more unexpected sites to visit (if so, I would've given it 5 stars instead of 3). Thanks.
- This is a great resource for either a New Yorker or someone who is planning a visit with kids. These cards are portable and contain a good bit of information, including phone numbers, subway routes, and websites. Each card focuses on one destination, but mentions other attractions near the "walk," which makes it easy to plan out your excursion.
- After living in NYC for a few years, I got this for some friends visiting the city. There were cool places I did not previously know about (especially in non-Manhattan areas like Bronx and Queens). The cards can help you plan trips around each attraction, which is helpful so you often don't have to do extra research to find out transportation, for example. The illustrations are colorful and fun, but definitely kid-ish in design. The cards and box are slightly clunky to carry around, however.

5 comments about Charlotte Sometimes (The New York Review Children's Collection).
- Although it is very interesting and well-written, do not read her review, unless you do not mind finding out major aspects about the book's ending.
- A friend picked this up for me because the song of the same name has been my favourite for many years. The song, Charlotte Sometimes, by The Cure was written based on the book.
This sweet story was so well written and an enjoyable read. Its YA fiction, so its short (only about 150 pp) and easy to read, but very hard to put down.
It very much reminded me of Coraline, by Neil Gaiman.
- 17 years ago, I found this book in my elementary school library and checked it out. It had such an impact on me that I have remembered every detail of it since then. Such a magical, well-written story.
- This book is a great idea, but, it seems that content is missing. It's as though the general idea is there, however, the author could have expanded ideas or methods in which the characters could be in contact with one another. I realize its a children's book though, so it cant be too full of information. Good book, I remembered it from my childhood and had to find it. I recommend it!
- I discovered this book because the singer Charlotte Sometimes got her name from it. So if you liked the book then look her up on myspace.

5 comments about Little Chapel on the River: A Pub, a Town and the Search for What Matters Most.
- I like the "come find yourself in a small town" genre and I like the Guinan family the author writes about. I even love the Wall Street Journal, where she is a writer on staff. We lived in nearby New Jersey when the terrorist attacks happened and lost some friends and neighbors, so I've lived through a bit of what she went through. But...the book was missing something for me. Even though Gwendolyn Bounds writes in detail about the pub on Garrison's Landing and the family who runs it, I just didn't feel the connection to the characters--she wrote more matter of factly than from the heart. I understood that she cared deeply about them, but she didn't make me care. She did make me curious and maybe I'll go to Guinan's someday. Well, that's my take on it. I'd give the book 3.5 stars, and recommend the book with the aforementioned reservations.
- Wow, I feel like I missed the boat (or the train as it may be) on this one. I see all the posts from back in 2005 and wondered why I hadn't seen this book before. Now in August of 2007 I just finished reading this book (for the second time). What a superb tale, timely, well written and very touching. I live not far from Garrison and feel compelled to stop in at Guinans and have a beer.
Thank you Wendy Bounds for telling this story. I am going to look for more tales from Ms. Bounds. Hope to see some soon.
Must read for any one looking for a great story.
- I couldn't think of a better title to my review, then to sum it up with my feelings after reading this book. THANK YOU Wendy for sharing your experiences at Guinan's with us. For introducing us to the wonderful cast of characters - human, animal, logistical. Your writing placed me right at a stool at the "chapel", or on a wind swept hill overlooking the Hudson. Thank you for forever memorializing this place and time and people. Grand job!
- I enjoyed this book very much. The author did a beautiful job describing the area and I felt like I knew the patrons and Jim by the time I finished the book. A very nice read!
- Probably the most "quiet" post-9/11 book I've seen, this is a touching tale of a woman's senses being awakened and values shifted by being immersed in completely new surroundings. More than a fish-out-of-water tale, it's a thoughtful exploration of the way a tragedy can prompt you to re-think the course your life is taking. But even without the 9/11 connotations, it's a rich, rewarding read. Highly recommended.

3 comments about New Jersey Day Trips: A Guide to Outings in New Jersey and Nearby Areas of New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware (New Jersey Day Trips).
- New format looks good for this old favorite. The 10th edition, published by Rutgers Univ. Press, may be a little milder in its view of NJ outings than previous editions, but the book still has a "voice". There are many new entries, quite a few of the short, factual variety so newcomers to the state should find plenty to do. Earlier editions had better cross-references and indexes, but this one has better driving directions and includes websites for almost all entries.
Out of state entries like th Crayola Factory or Hyde Park are now found at the end of each chapter, so once you get used to this you know where to find them. STill the best alll around guidebook to New Jersey.
- This product was sent in a timely manner and in described condition- would do service with again!
- Good book filled with interesting day trips not only in New Jersey but nearby states. I had purchased one about 10 years ago but needed a more current one.

- Time out New York was VERY helpful and up-to-date. Lots of cool tips and seemed to be very accurate in assessments and insights. Every morning I would tear the pages out of the book that were of interest and put in my pocket for reference...without having to carry the book all day......and now i will definitely have to buy a new copy for my next trip. The perfect book for pre-planning a New York adventure

4 comments about At the Mercy of the Mountains: True Stories of Survival and Tragedy in New York's Adirondacks.
- Definitely one of the best books I've read on the Adirondacks.
Having just completed climbing all the 46 Adirondack High Peaks in the past year I found this book thoroughly enjoyable. It is well researched, well written and the stories are retold in such a way that keep you on the edge of your seat.
I really had a difficult time putting this book down as I read about many mishaps in areas in the "Daks" that I had personally "discovered" having passed through just recently- these areas will be well-know to those who frequent this still somewhat rugged wilderness.
Not only was the book entertaining but educational. One can always learn from other's mistakes thus minimizing a repeat of such tragedies or risky situations. It certainly pushes home the idea that safety should never be compromised when venturing out into any mountains or wilderness.
This book will be a big hit amoung those not familar with the region as well as those who love the Adirondacks. Anyone who enjoys mountaineering and adventure tales involving tragedy or survival will enjoy & benefit.
I can see this book selling like "hotcakes" once word gets around about its availability.
- I was aware, at least in part,of most of these stories
but didn't know the details. The author made these historic
events come alive.
Great book.
DML 4/5/08
- My mother is from this area, and I have gone up my whole life (mid 40s) and this is the BEST book I think I have ever read about this area of the Adirondacks. A wonderful book - cannot recommend enough!!
- Could not put it down and did not want it to end. Gave me a greater appreciation for the Daks. Really inspired me to get out there and hike!
