3 comments about Take Your Bike: Family Rides in the Rochester (NY) Area - second edition (Take Your Bike).
- A great resource for people looking for good bike trails in the Rochester area. Easy-to-read maps of trails and locations, plus descriptions and difficulty ratings. A must-have for the avid Rochesterian biker! :~)
- Are there more bike shops per capita in Rochester or is it just that so many people want to enjoy the outdoors from May through October? I can't think of a more enjoyable source of weekend r&r than taking one of the trails suggested in this book. There are good suggestions for ability, the maps are adequate, and the directions to the start of the trail are clear. The only thing I'd add to this book is an online link for printable maps so I don't have to take the book (although pocketable) along. A must for any Rochesterian who wants to enjoy the trails around town.
- There is a new edition of this book that is fully updated and covers 42 trails. The new edition is ISBN # 1930480024. Type this number into the search field to read about the new edition.

3 comments about Moon New York State (Moon Handbooks).
- This is the first Moon book I bought - I'm an ardent Lonely Planet fan and I regret this purchase. It seems moon books are written with oldies in mind. There is little - if any - information about activities to do which Lonely Planet takes care of. Some of the sections like the finger lakes are so badly written that I can't imagine anyone going there after reading them.
This book feels more like a laundry list of places to go. If that is all that you are looking for, then it might work for you, otherwise, best stay away.
- If you really love New York, and all its different facets, you will love this book. It takes you street by street and neighborhood by neigborhood through this captivating city. You not only get recommendations on must-see tourist spots, unforgettable places to eat and well thought out hotel recommendations, but this book gives you a wonderful view into the former life of each street and neighborhood it covers. So much of the history of a city like New York is lost when buildings are torn down and neighborhoods evolve, but this book takes you back in time and gives you the full picture of each fascinating place. I enjoy reading it, even when I'm not planning a trip!
- Ms. Bird has done a wonderful job of covering New York City and state in a single volume. She manages to pack a ton of information between the covers of this book and includes a surprising level of detail on many out of the way places that other authors would have missed.
I should also complement the Moon editorial staff for keeping this massive volume well-organized and flowing right along.
In sum, this is an excellent pickup for anyone looking to familiarize themselves with NY state!

5 comments about The New York Mapguide: Fifth Edition.
- I went with some friends to Manhattan, and bought lots of different map books to easily get around. Upon getting to NYC, the New York Mapguide wasa the ONLY book we used. The information in it was everything we wanted, and more. It was so complete. I recommend 100% to all those going to Manhattan, that this will be the only book you'll use too.
- Every year I go to NYC for a couple days vacation and this book comes with me everytime. It is small enough so it can fit anywhere and small enough that you can have it out and nobody could tell it is a map. It looks as though you are just reading a book. I have bought other guides but they never compare. I would recommend this mapguide to anyone visiting the best city in the world.
- I have used this book twice when I have gone to New York City for a week at a time. The maps are accurate, the restaurant guides and entertainment tips help a great deal. This is the second edition of this book that I have purchased. If I go back to NYC again and there is another newer edition, I will definitely buy it as well.
- I used this to travel to NY for the first time and it was great. It was also shipped fast.
- Of the four items I purchased to help me navigate NYC, I would rate this as my second choice. It bills itself as a unique publication with information to enjoy Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx and it lives up to it's promise.
This would be my number one choice it I were staying in NYC or visiting with my family. It has tons of tourist information, is very easy to use and very detailed. It has a section titled "Interesting Walks" which is very nice for anyone who would like to stroll the city and take it all in.

2 comments about No Place I'd Rather Be: Wit and Wisdom from Adirondack Lean-To Journals.
- I bought this book for my husband for Xmas. He's been a camper, back-packer, and paddler for many years, and quite taken with the Adirondacks. So, I thought this book would be a perfect little stocking stuffer.
He read it right away, chuckled and laughed throughout, and has recommended it to many of his friends.
I think the book is a great idea and rings true for anyone who's dabbled in any outdoorsy-woodsman sport - or those who think they might like to!
- This book is a collection of entries in lean-to journals throughout the Adirondack park. This book was hard to put down. Some very entertaining tales are found here. Enjoy!

5 comments about Invisible New York: The Hidden Infrastructure of the City (Creating the North American Landscape).
- This book lived up to my expectations with it's beautiful photographs, insightful comments about each location photographed and rich, deep printing. A great book for anyone interested in wonderful black and white location photography, or in learning more about New York City and its' surroundings.
- I have an obsession with abandoned buildings. They are a place I know I can go to be alone because no one visits them anymore but the spirits of those who brought life to the buildings as more than just concrete and steel still linger.
It gives one a time to reflect on the temporality of our lives and the finiteness not only of our beings, but of our dreams and visions. It gives us pause to reflect on what is important and profound about life. When we are in these places we are really inside of parts of ourselves we don't recognize.
- "Invisible New York" is a splendid collection of photographs which pay tribute to New York City's technological past. Stanley Greenberg's large format camera yields dignified, poetic images of long-forgotten historic structures throughout the city. These range from beautiful pictures of bridge supports and hidden passageways to a deserted building at Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Field, once the city's primary airport. Although others have found New York City's architecture to be a rich source of photographic imagery, few have been as tenacious as Stanley Greenberg in creating stunningly beautiful visual poetry. I must commend Johns Hopkins University Press for publishing this beautiful tome of black and white photographs and keeping it in print. I eagerly look forward to seeing Greenberg's next book, which I think may be on a recent project documenting New York City's water supply system. He is surely one of the most distinguished photographers ever to have graduated from New York City's prestigious Stuyvesant High School.
- Invisible New York is one of the three or four most treasured books in my library. Greenberg's black and white photography is beautiful and lush. To me, the book's one shortcoming is that it's not longer! Greenberg has a sharp eye for reading and presenting spaces. A treat for all of us who wonder what lives down there under the manhole cover or over there behind that fence.
- Great coffee table book of little-seen aspects of NYC. One warning I'd mention is that not all of the pictures are of things underground/unseen. Some are simply of neglected/abandonded/decaying above ground sites (not exactly what I'd expected but it's still a good collection). Perhaps it would be best to peruse this book at your local bookseller before making a decision on the purchase.
