  1. I got this book for Christmas and it makes you wanna book a flight to the big apple right away !!

There's another 360° about London that is also very good.

  2. I bought this book as a gift to a Chilean family I will be staying with this summer. I chose it because, other than captions, there is very little writing and because the pictures are gorgeous and varied. I liked it because it gave a good taste of New York -- yes, there is a picture of the Crystler Building, the statue of liberty, but there are also pictures of Dylan's Candy Bar, the Tiffany's on Fifth Avenue, etc.

  1. When you're traveling, there's nothing better than having a travel book filled with maps, historical information, destination tips, and insider information. Unfortunately, the makers of the Mobil Travel Guide series have come close but not far enough to meeting most travelers' needs. The guides' strongest point is that they are packed with information; however, their organization makes them impossible to use for quick reference.

The guides begin with several full-color road maps. These are standard maps highlighting frequently traveled areas of a destination. The New York Mobil Travel Guide, for example, has close-up maps of major cities like Buffalo, Rochester, and Long Island. However, these are still broad-view maps and cannot take the place of regular city road maps.

One of the highlights of the series is its commitment to providing interested readers with historical information about the cities and sites they'll encounter. History buffs will absolutely love learning about how a particular city got its name or why a particular area is of otherwise significant importance.

Yet for the rest of us, providing historical information alone is not enough. If you're like me, you also want know about the hot spots in an area and the best way to get there. The Mobil series makes no attempt at providing travelers with anything more than a list of sites. From there, you're on your own.

For example, in New York, a visitor of the Angelika Film Center would be left to wonder where she could go to find a nice place to eat or shop after her visit. With the Mobil series, she'd have to flip through pages of restaurants, and then map them out herself before finally finding something she could walk or drive to.

Organization is also a problem because there is no table of contents. You have to flip through hundreds of pages to find what you want. You'd have better luck just stopping by your destination's Office of Travel and Tourism. There, you will find dozens of maps and brochures, complete with live people to respond to your questions.

With so many alternatives and other travel guide book series these days, there's really no need to use the Mobil books. It leaves so much to be desired that your money and time are better spent elsewhere.

  2. The Mobil Travel Guide used to be good years ago. I guess they're relying on their name to continue to sell these books. I wouldn't even give it two stars. You'll get more information from any travel website, on-line travel blog, or on-line maps... and, for free.

  1. WINE TOUR OF THE FINGER LAKES is a well-produced, lovely tour of some of the most beautiful scenery in the country--the wine country of the Finger Lakes of New York State. And by leaps and bounds, the Finger Lakes wines are competing with the best of California and Europe for awards. Learn more about the wines in text and pictures. And come visit!

  2. If you are planning to visit the Finger Lakes region and tour the wineries, this extremely well written guide will tell you everything you need to know. The author explains what to look for when tasting wines, the various kinds of wine you'll encounter, and the specific grape varieties the region is known for. There is information on all of the wineries in the area, with special emphasis given to those that are producing the most consistently outstanding wines. There are gorgeous pictures of many of the wineries and information on dining at the ones that have a cafe or restaurant. A dozen noted wine connoisseurs--the author included--each provide a list of top recommendations for purchasing wines. Finally, the text and photographs are beautifully presented on high quality paper. The Finger Lakes Book: A Complete Guide also covers wineries in the region, but if a major focus of your trip is visiting the wineries, you will find this guide to be by far the most informative resource.

  3. As I prepare and pack in order to move to the Finger Lakes region of NY state, I enjoyed reading Wine Tour, which further reinforces my love of the area. I have visited a few wineries and look forward to my permanent residence and a greater dedication of exploring the wine industry there. The book is well organized, informative and has many beautiful photographs of the region and its wineries. It is must read before wine touring.

  4. this was a fantastic trip - the first time we toured an area specifically for wine tasting, and became comfortable stopping into wineries and interacting with those from the industry - the recommendations were fantastic and we lent this book to another couple who were also grateful for it's recommendations

  1. This comment is not only to say how well priced this easy to read map is- it is also to praise Amazon for their wonderful and fast customer service; the map arrived slightly damaged; customer service immediately sent a new one, without even waiting for the damaged one to be returned, for which we did not have to pay postage (which is only fair here!)
" They" ( customer service) continue to be top notch in all aspects, which makes me a devoted Amazon customer.

  2. This atlas replaced my 1989 atlas. The new atlas has maps which are clearer, and the book contains more information than the old edition. Both of these rate a plus. But the pages are printed on much thinner paper than the old edition. The book is spiral bound and the pages tear easily. Thinner paper means the book will wear out quickly, which is disappointing.

  1. that the inside of the book prominently features the World Trade Center as it used to be. It should be updated. The rest of the book looks great - I love the Eyewitness guides, but this one needs a big refresh to be useful.

  2. We're in the process of planning our first family vacation to New York and checked this book out from our local library to get our four year-old son excited about the trip. As the previous review indicated, the book needs to be updated but with that said, this book has nice pictures and kid-friendly, easy to understand information.
