  1. In spite of this book dating back to 1992 there is a lot of good info about diving on Long Island's North Shore; The Long Island Sound and the bays, inlets and beachs on the South Shore's Atlantic Ocean side. If the shipwrecks are the training grounds for some of the world's best divers, the Long Island shore sites are where most of those divers started their local diving. Great book!

  1. I like the red ribbon. My favorite picture is the polar bear

  2. This is an amazing piece of work which deftly displays a wintry charm that I never knew New York City possessed. It's funny that only by looking at familiar places through someone else's eyes can we really see what's there. Whether you're a New Yorker, a transplanted New Yorker, or just an occasional visitor, this wonderful collection of Christmastime photos surely deserves a prominent place on your coffee table. Hats off to Mr. Crosby for a job quite well done.

  3. Being in New York at Christmas is one of my favorite things...and now I can relive that time whenever I pick up this book. The selection of subjects for the photographs is fascinating, the quality of the photography is excellent and the comments throughout the book are illuminating. I recommend New York Christmas as an ideal book for your library or as a gift.

  4. This book truly captures the essence of New York at Christmas. Mr. Crosby has done a remarkable job of capturing the known and the unknown, both of which make Manhattan a spectacular place to be.

The presentation is wonderful, the content is great, and the author/photographer is to be thanked for sharing his art with us.

I look forward to future books by Mr. Crosby.

  5. Don't worry if you don't reside in New York. This book is a must have if you like the images of christmas.

The book and it's many wonderful pictures depict christmas that many of us share no matter where you live.

If you want a real christmas mood setter and a beautiful coffee table christmas book to share with your visitors over the christmas holidays (and you and your own family too), then this book is one to get.

    A most recommended christmas book.

  1. This is truly a must have for anyone who camps in New York State. I am writing this review after purchasing my 4th copy. I have had 2 copies of my own, one of which a family member made off with, and I have bought 2 as gifts. It is the one thing we are never without from planning a trip to sitting at the campsite. We use the individual campground maps to choose our favorite sites and we use the tons of empty page space to make notes about the different campgrounds. We always have it in the car, even when we're not camping, so that if we ever pass a campground we can go through and make notes of some nice sites for planning future camping trips.

This is not a "wordy" book... it is simply maps and contact information for campsites - but the maps include all campsites, fishing, swimming, restrooms, etc etc. If you want a book that does some real chatting about the campgrounds or the region, this is NOT the book for you. However, if you want a book that clearly and accurately shows you the layout of any campground in the state before you blindly reserve a site, then buy this book.
I sit down, go to reserveamerica.com, open my Campgrounds of NY book - and choose the best site for my camping trip. The guesswork is gone, and I have had nothing but good luck if I trusted my book. I'm sure a lot of work went into putting this book together in such a clear and helpful way - and it paid off!

    I love it!

  1. As a jazz fan, drummer and bandleader who's listened around Manhattan for 28 years and played around Manhattan for 16 years, I'm very impressed with this book. It's extremely well researched, the production quality is high, and the quality of the writing is so good that it makes an interesting read apart from its functionality as a guidebook. My only reservation is that it leaves out a couple of obvious jazz clubs and includes some non-jazz clubs. But that aside, I'm astonished at how much the author knows about his subject, and how much I was able to learn that I didn't already know. Very highly recommended.

  2. If you're planning to check out some jazz in NYC, my advice is simple: get this book. Dollar knows his stuff, and the book is so smartly written that it's worth a read even if you don't know the difference betweeen Bill Evans and Gil Evans. And if you're into cutting-edge jazz, you'll find some destinations here that will send you to postbop heaven.

  3. A great resource for the conoisseur as well as the jazz illiterate (like me!). This book is a terrific guide to some fabulous joints, and is fun to read, too. Well done!

  1. A real gem of a book - one of those that everyone with even a remote interest in its subject matter should own. I'd give it five stars if there were more maps.

  2. This book is a great. I've used it a number of times, and consider it one of my favorite outdoor guides to NJ. It tells you everything you need to know about a variety of trails: who uses the trail (mountain bikes, horses, hiking-only, etc.), directions to get to the trail, and where you can park (if that isn't obvious). If you are just starting-out exploring "Outdoor New Jersey" you cannot be without this book.

  3. Every serious New Jersey hiker must have the most current version of this guidebook. This 1988 edition marks the split of the New York and New Jersey volumes in two; previous editions included both states.

The current edition is New Jersey Walk Book: A Companion to the New York Walk Book; it was published in 2004.

The "Walk Book" was originally published in 1923 by the National Geographic Society; the next four editions were published by Doubleday; and the sixth and later editions have been published by the NYNJTC. The first five editions included trails in both New York and New Jersey. In 1988, the "Walk Book" was published by the NYNJTC and split in two, the New York version was called the 6th edition, and the New Jersey version, the 1st edition.

"The New York Times" published an interesting article on May 19, 1998 by Glenn Collins on the history of the Trail Conference and the "Walk Book". It extracted several passages from the 1923 "Walk Book" (which now sells for around $200 if you can find a copy):

"For protection against rain, pure rubber clothing is about the only reliable material; but in warm weather or after exertion it is uncomfortably hot. . . ."

"Boots or stout leggings will save many a bruised shin or ankle or torn stocking and trouser leg. Breeches for women, long worn in the Western outing clubs, are becoming more in vogue in the East and sensibly so. There are combinations of breeches with detachable skirts which are convenient for travel to and from the country or where city or country yokels may stare. . . ."

"A pack on the back is bound to cause heavy perspiration and wetting between the shoulder blades. Reed frames have been devised to hold the pack off the back and give circulation or air. . . ."

"Paper is as effective a protection against wind as leather, and many trampers regard a paper waistcoat, costing 50 cents, as indispensable for blustery weather. . . ."

"If you are ever out with Malcomson he will introduce his big Bermuda onion. You will crave a thick slice and you will never go tramping again without one. It adds horse power to one's legs after luncheon. . . ."

Things have changed a bit since 1923, but the trails are still a major benefit of living in this area. Collect this 1988 volume for its historical interest; purchase the revised 2004 edition and use it to hike some great New Jersey trails.

    Robert C. Ross 2008
