5 comments about Avant Guide New York City: Insiders' Guide to Progressive Culture (Avant Guide New York City).
- when we first scanned this guide we thought perhaps we were too old to appreciate it {my husband and I are in our fifties]. However, we loved every bit of it and were especially helped in terms of what not to do or where not to eat.
- Honestly, I've been living in New York for the past two years, and I think I have a reasonably fair grasp on its nighlife, restaurants, whathaveyou. Not only did this book have a listing of some of my favorite spots, but it talked about some places I wish I'd known about earlier. Some good stuff here.
- I love to travel and I love guidebooks. This one is the best series Ive seen. it makes me laugh, has a great senseability about the places I like and really feels like it was written by a friend. I never write these reviews, but Im inspired to write this one because the book is so good.
- I am a big fan of the Avant-Guides. I used this book almost exclusively for a trip to NYC in the spring of 2002--thus some of the information had changed. Otherwise I would have rated it at a 5 star. The information on the museums and where to get the best deal on theater ticket was very helpful. I have since ordered the guides for Las Vegas, New Orleans and Toronto in hopes of finding the same cool, underground type of information provided for NYC. PLEASE--do guides for Montreal, Washington D.C. and Seattle.
- I Just returned from 1 week business/pleasure visit to New York and I found this guide full of good recommendations and descriptions were accurate. Better than Lonely Planet or Time Out's, which I also bought. Quite a useful guide with plentiful restaurant, watering hole and sight-seeing suggestions. It's replete with valuable information about attractions, hotels, eateries, shops, spas, etc. Beyond this, however, the layout is terrific, and the book is remarkably easy to use as a result. The maps, in particular, are helpful.I'd definintely purchase an Avant Guide guidebook again. I am happy to say that this book was by far the best single-city guide I used.

4 comments about Best Hikes With Children in the Catskills & Hudson River Valley.
- This book led me up to Taconic State Park with my family. We followed the very detailed trail directions for a hike labeled as "Easy for Children". The trail was reasonably easy to follow at first, but led us through over a mile of land that was regularly posted as private property / no trespassing. But much worse, at the end, the trail simply disappeared. The book mentions that you may have to bushwhack for 100 feet at the end, but we were up to our waists in thorns, unable to see our destination and at least several hundred YARDS from where we needed to go. Definitely not easy to do when you are carrying a three-year-old. In retrospect, we should have verified the trail with the park rangers who would have told us that no such trail exists on park land. In the future, we will not trust this book.
- I've generally had good luck with the hikes described in this book, and have taken my children on several. As with other hiking books I've used, though, 8 years (from the time of publication) can make a big difference in the condition of trails, for better and/or worse. An update might be helpful. We've discovered some really cool places with this book (I like the emphasis on what kids would like about a trail, not just what the adults want to see) and the time and distance estimates are accurate. Nevertheless, I plan to avoid the Taconic Trail mentioned by the previous reviewer . . .
- The Lewis's have quite a routine: move into an area where there is already a plethora of good guide books, borrow the research and trail information, change it round to suit their niche (hiking with kids), provide no acknowledgement or recognition of their sources, no bibliographic matter, no reference lists, and bingo, an "original" book. This formulaic approach to authorship is in many respects dishonest, infringing, and presumptuous. As for guidebooks in general, there are much better ones around.
- This seems to be a rehash of the other guidebooks I own. The trails have changed considerably since this book was written, too.

1 comments about Walks and Rambles on Long Island (Walks & Rambles Guides).
- Living on Long Island my entire life, I found this book extremely validating of my own experiences with travels on the island. I know that many of the landscapes have changed in the past 10 years since the book was written, but each one is still well worth the trip. If you are one that wants to leave the city for the weekend or wants to enjoy the heritage and nature that our own backyard produces, which we are unaware of, this is your guide. Enrich your life, go outside, breath the fresh air, and talk a walk with this book, you won't be disappointed.
