  1. This is the map to get - small enough to not make you look like a big dork if you need to do a quick "map check" while out on the streets and very easy to carry around, but with plenty of detail, and very easy to immediately read with important buildings marked. It's also laminated for durability.
This little map really increased our enjoyment of New York, and I can recommend it with confidence. Even has a handy subway map!

  2. I had never been to Manhattan before and would need a good map. The New York City Slicker by Hagstrom was recommended by a friend who had been several times and found it useful. It was great. I was able to navigate the streets with ease.

I would also recommend the NY sightseeing bus tours that allow you to HOP On, HOP off for a two day period. It helped bring the map alive

  1. This guide would be fine if you're a Brit or Aussie. But if you're an American and haven't been on the moon for most your life, you'll find lots of advice you don't really need. For example, most Americans pretty much know what constitues an America breakfast or what are restaurants are like in general. Plus, the guide doesn't list many actual restaurants or hotels and there are no maps (which may be because my version was an e-book). Still, the insights are very interesting to read and you'll have a good feel for the City if you've completed the book before you arrive.

  2. I rated this one star because it was not what I wanted. I wanted to purchase the Rough Guide to New York City but ordered The Rough Guides' to New York City DIRECTIONS by mistake. I was fooled because they both have the exact same picture of the front cover and a similar name and the two books did not appear on the same search results page. They are different in size but that is not apparent when ordering on-line. The thumbnail picture of the directions appears to be that of the guide. The directions book is a lot of maps. The knew guide was excellent because I had a copy from the library. Having both is probably a good if you are going to do much walking.

  3. The picture shown is the full Rough Guide, however, this listing is for Rough Guide Directions. I have both books and both are very good. The Directions version is simply a smaller version of the full Rough Guide. Both books contain very good maps and listings. The Directions version omits a lot of the historical items that are in the full Rough Guide. The nice thing about Directions is that it is small enough to carry in a back pocket or purse. The Rough Guide is much larger and heavier.

  1. My copy of the previous edition of this book is dog-eared and worn because I use it so much as a guide, reference and and entertainment. Levine knows New York, food, and people. He knows his stuff but he's not snooty about it. He's as much at home writing about Gray's Papaya hot dogs as he is about the finest wines

  2. Ed Levine is the host of a funny and very informative local New York restaurant and food review show called "New York Eats". I have repeatly sent in emails hoping to get a free copy of his book but to no avail. Alas I recently bought this book and it has helped me on many occasions. From finding the best pizza in NYC to the best take out fois gras. A indispensable gift for someone living in New York City and surrounding areas and even better for someone about to visit and they want to know where to get the best food in the best city on earth.
