This book is a very interesting exploration of old New York, written by an interesting woman, Hope Cooke, who among other things was married to the prince of Sikkim, and (enjoyed?) much publicity in the 60's. I read her autobiography after reading this, but actually, she come across as being much more interesting in this scholarly book. I wish she would write more on the subject of old New York.

1. Recently did the tour, which was not as varied as some of the others. Also one of the venues had moved and I couldn't get access to one of the others even though I was there at the recommended time. Still worth doing but there are better tours in the series.

1. THe Foulkes have hit their stride with this marvelous and detailed guide to the beautiful Upstate New York area. Their rich narrative draws the reader right in, enticing you to visit the many sights. This book is a must read for travelers to the area.

1. This is treat for anyone interested in photography, especially in the period leading up to Winogrand, Friedlander, etc. Most of the photographs in this book, I've never seen before. Included are interesting 35mm work by Diane Arbus, some untypical Avedon, great Robert Frank's that I haven't seen published anywhere else, early Winogrand. However the really nice thing about this book is in being able to see the work of those lesser known, but nonetheless great, photographers such as Leon Levinstein, Louis Fauer, Alexi Brodovitch, and many more. Also includes a thorough and informative essay as well as individual profiles on the artists involved.



2. I agree that this is a great collection of photographs, many either never or seldom published before, and supported by interesting and original text. It is amazing how little biographical information exists on so many photographers. I bought the book because it encompassed so many of my photographic heroes and introduced me to some photographers I was not familiar with. But the reason I decided to actually write a review here was to correct the previous reviewer who mentions that Gary Winogrand's work is included in the book. It's not. But it sure is nice to see more on the Photo League. What a great group. And it's nice to see their influence so fully recognized. Thank you Ms. Livingston!

1. The LP 'Best Of' book on NYC was to itemized. It ended up containing very little actual information on NYC. My girlfriend and I was in NYC the week of the 6th of February and used nothing but the map. More useful information can be found on the internet, so I cannot recommend this book; even though it is inexpensive, it is money well used for other purchases.



2. Some people might want even more info but there really is enough in this book to plan a great visit to NYC. Plus it's small enough to carry with you so you always have a map, a subway map and food recommendations with you. I tried a number of the restaurants listed in this book and they were all very good. The street map with items plotted right on it is very helpful and I'd be a mess without the subway map. If you want to make sure you cover all the best sights and museums, the Highlights section near the front is a great check list. This book has served me well on two trips to NYC, I plan to buy the new edition when it comes out in May before I go back over the summer.
