  1. ... be it as a newbie or not, it is this map. Accurate, perfect format, and above all, indestructible. Survived long days in my pockets without wear or tear, and continues to draw jealous looks from everyone with a crumpled and dog-eared paper pocket map ;-)

  2. This really is a great little NYC map. It unfolds and refolds easily without that frustrating 'which part do I fold in now?' experience traditionally associated with folding maps. The lamination ensures that it won't suffer from wear and tear. Get one!

  3. I was blown away with all the info they crammed into a two sided page that folds up to 3" x 4" pocket size & it's water proof too. I can't imagine what you'd need that this little map doesn't have. One side includes the "street" map with a list of all the "main" street names & guides for all the sights along with the NY City subway routes.

The other side includes day trip suggestions, top sights to see and this larger map covers NYC and all the surrounding areas ... The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan Midtown, Financial District, Chinatown, Little Italy, Greenwich Village, SoHo and a bit of info about each including subway info.

This map also has facts of all kinds about the city ie: history & statistics, climate, airport info, and my favorite ... listings of all the museums/galleries, music/theaters/opera, skyscrapers, parks/gardens/zoos, annual festivals/festivities, & other sights with a brief explanations of each and their location on the map.

I bought several books at the same time I bought this map. I've been studying this map and charting on my trip and haven't even looked at the books yet. This map is really all you need unless you want to read up on the history of sites before you arrive. DS

  1. This map was not at all helpful. The text is small. It splits the borough in half vertically with one half on one side and the other half on the flip side of the map. I have found other maps that are much more user-friendly especially for individuals who are not very familiar with Brooklyn.

  2. To add to the criticism of this map, it does not have the directions of one way streets on it. The Streetwise Manhattan has little arrows on all the one way streets, and this is even more crucial for navigating in Brooklyn!

I would definitely pick out a map in a store and then buy it online if it's cheaper.

  3. I loved Streetwise Manhattan so I bought this. What a disapointment! The main strength of Streetwise is the integration of Streets and Subways. But Streetwise Brooklyn actually leaves off some subway stations! Ever try to mark up a laminated map to add a stop? Doesn't work, and neither does this map. And the north/south split just doesn't work for Brooklyn. Also, the trains to Brooklyn changed when the Manhattan bridge re-opened to subway traffic, so where's a new edition? Do get the Manhattan version, it's complete and works great, but skip Brooklyn.

  1. I've used the Streetwise maps for New York (Manhattan and Queens), Chicago, London and Dublin and I've found them extremely useful. One measure of how good they are is how unobtrusively they work their way into your trip. The maps are compact (fit in an inside jacket pocket - good for hiding your tourist status!), contain all the right information (great overlay of subway and street information - in the New York case, probably better than their transit map) and extremely durable laminate (minimal wearing at the folds). Great map.

  1. When you're traveling, there's nothing better than having a travel book filled with maps, historical information, destination tips, and insider information. Unfortunately, the makers of the Mobil Travel Guide series have come close but not far enough to meeting most travelers' needs. The guides' strongest point is that they are packed with information; however, their organization makes them impossible to use for quick reference.

The guides begin with several full-color road maps. These are standard maps highlighting frequently traveled areas of a destination. The New York Mobil Travel Guide, for example, has close-up maps of major cities like Buffalo, Rochester, and Long Island. However, these are still broad-view maps and cannot take the place of regular city road maps.

One of the highlights of the series is its commitment to providing interested readers with historical information about the cities and sites they'll encounter. History buffs will absolutely love learning about how a particular city got its name or why a particular area is of otherwise significant importance.

Yet for the rest of us, providing historical information alone is not enough. If you're like me, you also want know about the hot spots in an area and the best way to get there. The Mobil series makes no attempt at providing travelers with anything more than a list of sites. From there, you're on your own.

For example, in New York, a visitor of the Angelika Film Center would be left to wonder where she could go to find a nice place to eat or shop after her visit. With the Mobil series, she'd have to flip through pages of restaurants, and then map them out herself before finally finding something she could walk or drive to.

Organization is also a problem because there is no table of contents. You have to flip through hundreds of pages to find what you want. You'd have better luck just stopping by your destination's Office of Travel and Tourism. There, you will find dozens of maps and brochures, complete with live people to respond to your questions.

With so many alternatives and other travel guide book series these days, there's really no need to use the Mobil books. It leaves so much to be desired that your money and time are better spent elsewhere.

  1. This map was accurate and really helped us get around the island. The laminated finish is the best feature. You can use it over and over, it doesn't tear and is very easy to refold.

  1. Two 10-year-olds are the last survivors of a long line of english aristocrats. The family castle lies in ruins, but the children are determined to restore it to its former glory with the help of the long-lost family treasure. The task seems daunting, but they soon discover there's some intricate, powerful magic in the family crest.. Subsequently the treasure hunt hurtles along at breathtaking pace. The magic includes frequent trips into the turbulent (and dangerous) times of England's feudal past to discover the exact time and place where the treasure was hidden.. This book and it's sequel (or prequel?!) "Harding's Luck" can't be recommended enough. They are children's classics of the nicest kind - not the least bit sirupy - but full of adventure and magic

  2. One of the delightful things about this book is that it treats children as thinking beings, yet still manages to contain all of the magic and adventure of childhood. As in all of her work, E. Nesbit tells an exciting story while encouraging the reader to consider the meaning of things. One of the best books written by one of the best children's writers of all time.

  3. I got this and "Hardings Luck" one christmas about twentyfive years ago. These stories have stayed with me throughout my adult life and I have never forgotten how I was swept away by the stories. These books are educational while being simply spellbinding...my imagination went wild, back then. Absolutely a must!

  4. I was hoping to read this book to my 7 year old boy. It was heavy for him and somewhat slow. The book requires maturity and sophisticated vocabulary, somehow it does not fit the pace at which our kids live now.

It certainly can be appreciated by an older, more mature kid, who loves the English language. It is beautifully written.

  1. Jean Pike has created an outstanding novel with Heatherfield.
She takes the reader back to New York State in the 1940s and does it convincingly, something not every author can do. And she deftly combines a love story with the paranormal in a way that makes it totally believable.
The reader can't help but love the central characters. I would like to say more about the story itself; but it wouldn't be fair to future readers who need to experience this intricate plot and group of complex characters for themselves. The ending will literally give you goose bumps.
I thought Heatherfield was an absolute joy to read.
    Larry Hippler

  2. Once again, M. Jean Pike establishes herself as a literary force to be reckoned with. With her sparkling style, she brings Heatherfield to amazing life with all the charm, emotion and mystery that her readers have come to expect - and with an ending will leave you speechless.

  3. I stumbled upon this little gem totally by accident--I'm so glad I did. This book was jam-packed with all sorts of good things--romance, suspense, time travel to the past, likable characters and nasty villains. Simply put, the writing was superb, the pace was perfect, and the many twists and turns had me glued to this book. I don't know how the author managed to deliver such a wallop in just 252 pages!!

Jake is a tortured man, scarred both physically, and emotionally. Tory is pulled into the past, just after WWII has ended. She feels pain for what Jake has endured, but wants to get back to her own time, 1999. I tried to hold back my emotions on this one, but I could not--IT WAS THAT GOOD!

The latter part of this book was like watching a really good action adventure movie--riveting! The ending, well, let's just say it totally floored me. Excellent!

This is a MUST READ for lovers of romantic time travel. You will remember these characters and this poignant story long after you've read this book. It is truly a keeper.

  4. M. Jean Pike has done it again with her novel Heatherfield following her delightful book, Waiting for the Rain. Meet Tory Sasser, a young woman who feels frustrated in her work as a counselor and loves to read. When she stops into her favorite bookstore, she's given an unfinished romance novel. As she finishes the book, her tears turn into new writing on the pages. Tory is pulled into the novel and she realizes she is now in a fictional town called Heatherfield and the year is 1949. The town is a creation of Destiny Page, a bad romance writer. Tory meets Jake Benjamin, a war veteran who lives alone as a recluse. Tory must help the residents of the town fight an evil developer while trying to find a way out for herself.
Jean Pike does an admirable job creating believable characters with a credible plot. I found myself unable to put this book down and finished it quickly. This is an engrossing tale of love, romance, and drama. And yes, I am a male reading a romance novel. This book is not a sappy romance novel, it is a nice breath of fresh air and anyone will enjoy it. I eagerly await her next book.

  5. Normally, I love time travel books, but this one was a little too strange for me to get my mind around. A person who starts reading a book and becomes the book, Kind of like Harry Potter but in a romance venue. Luckily it was a short book and I finished it.

  1. I was recently in the area for a business trip and had a couple days to spend in the City. LP's "NYC Encounter" book was invaluable as a quick resource for addresses, the subway map, and highlights of the more touristed Manhattan districts. To its credit, and unlike many other guides which believe visitors have no business leaving Manhattan, it also included a brief overview of some Brooklyn sights. For a short visit I found New York City Encounter perfect, but when I return for a longer visit a more detailed guide would work better- hopefully with more coverage of the other boroughs.

  2. Very Useful Guide to the Big Apple, it includes pretty much all you need: metro maps, street maps, major attractions, descriptions, and properly selected Tips. Unfortunately no real insider news.
The chosen listing into different districts is great since it shows detail maps for every sightseing spot shown in every district, a rip out full fold map of manhatten is included though too.
    Negative:
The suggested "hot clubs" are the common meat markets of the city. The recommended "harlem soul food restaurant" disappointed as well Nothing special...

    Buttom Line:

For a short trip to NYC this Book is all you need. Major phone numbers, sight seeing, tips to save money, culture, arts, shopping you'll find it all! To find the really sneaky places you have to talk to the locals!

  3. It is a small book, but it did a pretty good job in providing readers necessary information on where to go with clear metro map on the back. I found the color-coded pages are quite easy for me to scout a district. The only drawback may be it's a little bit official.

  4. It includes information about museums, etc, divided by zones, but I think not so good restaurant and bar choices.
