  1. This book of postcards contains 21 high quality postcards with beautiful panaromas from around the city. My favorite is the Columbia University postcard, which portrays my future college :)

    Highly recommended!

  2. I ordered this book of 21 NY postcards thinking that it was exactly the same as one that I already have from Browntrout. The images in the one I have are stunning, and I wanted to offer it as a gift. (I thought the postcards sold by Amazon were the same because the cover image shown on the site matches exactly the cover of the book of 30 postcards). What I received was completely different -- different cover, poorer quality postcards, overall a huge let-down. Don't buy this product -- make sure what you see is what you get.

  1. This is another great book by the ADK covering the Raquette Lake, Old Forge, and lower regions on the western side of the beautiful park. A must have for even the most casual of hikers.

  1. An excellent book for your coffee table.

The photography is superb. Many well known structures and locations are photographed from angles that provide the reader a new and interesting perspective. Starting from the New York Harbor and working north, Mr. Ortner covers all the important locations, from the Financial Distict and Soho through Midtown and Central Park to the upper East and West sides of the island known as Manhattan.

Accompanying the photos are captions that permit the reader to discover interesting new facts about the Big Apple.

The double gatefolds and glorious full color prints are an excellent choice as a gift, as a souvenir or just as a relaxing book. Whether you reside in the city, desire to visit someday or just enjoy beautiful pictures, it is a book that you and your family will truly enjoy.

  2. I found this book by chance in a 2nd hand bookstore the day when the towers of the WTC collapsed. It brought tears to my eyes to see how impressive and beautiful the skyline and these buildings were.

The pictures in this book are excellent and show the city in the mellow light of early morning and evening. My favorite is the one showing the Statue of Liberty with the WTC towers behind it, almost dwarfing it. For me this picture captures the essence of NYC.

  3. If you're looking for just one volume of photographs of The Big Apple, you've found the one to buy. I've just completed my 6th visit to New York since 1997, and I'm so glad I found this book. Believe me -- I'm really picky about this sort of thing, and each one of Jon Ortner's photographs is breathtaking. All the other New York books don't even begin to compare with this one. Looking through this book is like being back in New York again. All the major sites of Manhattan are there -- The Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building, Central Park and more.

Don't hesitate to buy this book.

  4. Jon Ortner takes exceptional photographs. For New York City lovers, it truly doesn't get any better than this. Though I live about 70 miles from Manhattan (Long Island, NY), I rarely get the opportunity to visit, making this book perfect for me. This book truly brings the best of Manhattan right to you.
Mr. Ortner covers all aspects of the city, including climbing to the top of the famous Verrazano Narrows Bridge (Brooklyn- Staten Island, NY) and taking exceptional view photos.
This book is a wonderful buy. $42 is worth it. You won't be sorry you purchased it!

  1. I read this books years ago and I still remember it. If that's not the mark of a really good book, I don't know what is.

The story is easy to follow. An alien android trying to preserve ecosystems is attacked by a reprogrammed duplicate android and has to land on Earth. To prevent crashing into modern-day New York, he travels back in time to the time where only native americans inhabited the area - coinciding with the birth of a young brave of whom the shamen said is going to avert a forthcoming calamity.

Add a young girl from the 20th century who knows martial arts and much time traveling, and you get a really memorable story.

    I'd recommend it.

4 comments about Boats and Boating in the Adirondacks.
  1. Hallie Bond has written a masterful account rich with history and funky details about one of America's most unusual boating regions. Her grasp of boating, the North Country woods, the life of Adirondack guides, and the evolution of boat designs provides an entertaining yet immensely informative tapestry. Bond is a scholar and curator of boats at the Adirondack Museum, but she writes with a journalist's ease. Her eye for detail, her control of narrative, her insights into countless eccentric characters, and her love for the North woods all contribute to a compelling story about a changing, evolving culture.

This book is also about ingenuity in boat building and the special attributes of design that produced world famous boats. The Adirondack Guideboat, the St. Lawrence River Skiff, and the vast assortment of canoes designed by Henry Rushton not only filled special needs but also changed how people perceived and enjoyed the Adirondacks. She traces the evolution of canoes, the co-mingling of canoes and kayaks, the emergence of Guideboats and assorted craft, each used for pragmatic purposes, then changed as people changed. In many ways this is a cultural history,as much about people as about boats. Yet it includes innumerable photos and illustrations that suggest these builders were also artists and surely supperb craftsmen.

She takes advantage of the Museum's remarkable collection of boats and boating art, and provides a fun and engrossing pictorial narrative. Her book is as fun to browse as it is to read, and it's all handsomely put together. I've read a lot of books about boats, but this may be the best I've ever read.

  3. Reading this book started me on the search for others like it. Recently, I read Sailing Ships of New England by George Francis Dow, another book about the history of boats in a specific region of the US. If you're interested in this sort of thing, I highly recommend it. It's full of great illustrations and makes for a great follow-up to Boating in the Adirondacks.

  4. There could hardly be a more qualified author for this book's subject. Hallie Bond is an historian and Curator of Collections and Boats at the Adirondack Museum. For anyone who has watched in awe as an Adirondack Guideboat has glided out of the morning mist by a local getting her morning exercise or perhaps her daily groceries, this book will charm you. The book covers canoes, kayaks, sailing canoes, guide boats, launches, dories, and even runabouts. The author has included the copious endnotes which you'd expect of such a scholarly treatment, as well as a comprehensive catalog of the boat collection in the Adirondack Museum. And as likely as you are to purchase this book for its mesmerizing historic photographs of the long-gone Adirondack denizens at work and play in their boats, you are most likely to treasure it as the definitive history of Adirondack watercraft. For it is in writing history that Ms. Bond excels. You will learn about the "sports," the local term for visiting hunters and fishermen, and you will share the awe of the tourists admiring the region's natural beauty: "...we were spellbound, for a time, by a scene in which were blended so many natural harmonies." Of course you will also learn how each type of boat was made, and what characteristics each one offered. It is a compelling book, and will make you want to own a guideboat of your own, and will make you want to visit the Adirondack Museum. Savor it slowly, chapter by chapter, and when you return to the Adirondacks, you'll be a much wiser sport for having read Ms. Bond's masterpiece.

  1. Very good, easy-to-read book on the origins of the Catskill Mountains, written vividly and with fairly good illustrations. I just used it as a guide to a couple of places, and found it very useful. It's very broad, covering the origins, the fossils, etc. I recommend it for anyone interested in the Catskills region, especially people who live in or
    near them.

  2. No one knows Catskills geology more thoroughly, or writes about it more engagingly and eloquently, than Hartwick College's Bob Titus. There is a real art to turning the dry facts of ancient boulders and Devonian shale into highly entertaining prose - and Titus has mastered that art.
