  1. The ultimate source. Excellent.
For anyone who wants/needs to know
what happened: when, where and who
in The Village. Crtammed full of facts
    and great stories, well-researched.
    Highly recommended.

  2. Originally, Greenwich Village was settled by the rich and merchant class of lower Manhattan as an escape from the recurring ravages of yellow fever and cholera. For this reason Greenwich Village was, essentially, never really mapped out; never really settled in accordance to any public plan. Perhaps this haphazard beginning is what gave the area its combined refined yet anarchic flavor that exists until this day.

And this was also the reason for the area becoming attractive to free-thinkers, tourists, bohemians and artists. Complete with maps, illustrations and walking tours of the Village, Terry Miller's "Greenwich Village and How It Got that Way" reveals the extraordinary history and the historic people who made the place their homes. Artists Jackson Pollack and Edward Hopper, poets Edna St. Vincent Millay and Walt Whitman, playwright Eugene O'Neill, and novelist Willa Cather, are just a few of the famous names who lived and created work here, as they created something uniquely American.

"Greenwich Village and How It Got That Way" is a great book for people who will visit the village, and is great for New Yorkers, themselves, to learn about this neighborhood that they thought they knew so well.

Rocco Dormarunno, author of The Five Points

  1. This is a great map, but it is hard to use on a day to day basis as a quick reference while walking the streets of New York. It has great detail of midtown Manhattan, where most tourists spend their time. The streets, subways, and nearly every landmark and store/hotel/resturant are situated to scale on the map. This is extremely helpful if you don't have the exact address of, say Carnegie Deli, you can just go to the area where you think it is, and look around till you find the actual Carnegie label. It also has great detailed maps of the other neighborhoods (the Villages, East Side, Lower East Side, Financial District, etc.) with all the major landmarks, but less detail about the stores and businesses than the midtown section. The problem with the map is it is made of that real thin, cheap paper (I mean look a the price) and it is BIG when unfolded (It's a bit awkward when you're in the subway, or in a tight line at an attraction, and you have to pull out this big old bedsheet of a map), so you have to constantly fold it back/forth/up/down against the creases and with the in and out of the coat pocket, it wasn't long before it just started shredding at the creases. It did last me the week however, and I used it daily and excessively, but it's not much good for anything now except a keepsake of our great trip. If I had it to do again, I'd still buy this map for it's exceptional detail (and cheap price), but consider getting one of the laminated maps for the day to day stuff (I think the National Geographic Destination Maps are great for this purpose, they were the best thing I used for London, Rome, Paris, and the New York one looked just as good--I should have gotten that one as well).

  1. This handsome little volume invites the reader to look up, at hand-carved decorative elements on buildings throughout Manhattan. Whether you are actually traveling or merely sitting in an armchair this offers a lovely way to slow down and really see examples from the past that have been preserved and/or are slowly deteriorating.

  1. In spite of this book dating back to 1992 there is a lot of good info about diving on Long Island's North Shore; The Long Island Sound and the bays, inlets and beachs on the South Shore's Atlantic Ocean side. If the shipwrecks are the training grounds for some of the world's best divers, the Long Island shore sites are where most of those divers started their local diving. Great book!

  1. I like the red ribbon. My favorite picture is the polar bear

  2. This is an amazing piece of work which deftly displays a wintry charm that I never knew New York City possessed. It's funny that only by looking at familiar places through someone else's eyes can we really see what's there. Whether you're a New Yorker, a transplanted New Yorker, or just an occasional visitor, this wonderful collection of Christmastime photos surely deserves a prominent place on your coffee table. Hats off to Mr. Crosby for a job quite well done.

  3. Being in New York at Christmas is one of my favorite things...and now I can relive that time whenever I pick up this book. The selection of subjects for the photographs is fascinating, the quality of the photography is excellent and the comments throughout the book are illuminating. I recommend New York Christmas as an ideal book for your library or as a gift.

  4. This book truly captures the essence of New York at Christmas. Mr. Crosby has done a remarkable job of capturing the known and the unknown, both of which make Manhattan a spectacular place to be.

The presentation is wonderful, the content is great, and the author/photographer is to be thanked for sharing his art with us.

I look forward to future books by Mr. Crosby.

  5. Don't worry if you don't reside in New York. This book is a must have if you like the images of christmas.

The book and it's many wonderful pictures depict christmas that many of us share no matter where you live.

If you want a real christmas mood setter and a beautiful coffee table christmas book to share with your visitors over the christmas holidays (and you and your own family too), then this book is one to get.

    A most recommended christmas book.
