  1. Both this guide and "Children's Guide to Santa Fe" provide basic information about the usual activities and attractions popular with children in Santa Fe: the Children's Museum, Palace of the Governors, the Plaza, and lots of others. Both are great guidebooks written for parents to help them select places to visit and activities to include when they take their children to Santa Fe.

This guide is more informal than the other--breezy even--and its information seems more personalized, yet practical. It focuses more on outdoor activities, but also includes useful descriptions of child-friendly (yet interesting) restaurants. It is shorter and a little cheaper than the other.

You will likely be happy with either guidebook to help you select activities for your children to enjoy in the wonderful place that is Santa Fe.

Of course, if you are looking for a guide that is written for children rather than for parents--one that can be your child's own--I recommend I See Santa Fe!: A Children's Guide and Coloring Book

-Lynn Michelsohn, author of Roswell, Your Travel Guide to the UFO Capital of the World!

  1. Was shock in the lack of detail and inside info on hotels, activities, and restaurants. Heading to Cabo San Lucas in Nov 06 and did not even list our 4 star hotel that has been around for decades with the exception of a one liner about festival night, nor the two pirate ship cruises, glass bottom boats, ultra lite info, baja racing....well you get the idea. If you have not been there before you would assume there is nothing to do but club, whale watch, golf and eat. Good general info for Mexico traveling.

  2. Excellent reading.....updated info regarding activities and included maps (thank goodness)and milege from Point A to B...interesting reading and recommended for anyone who wishes to experience Baja fun....

  3. I've been going to Cabo for years and I can tell you there's nothing remarkable about this book. They actually sugest Cabo Wabo is a main attraction. Anyone who's been to Cabo knows there are much better places. The book has almost no pictures, the few maps are useless and the restaurant recomendations are predictable.
Do yourself a favor, save the $10 and ask a Cabo Taxi driver to show you around.

  1. THE WORLD MAP 1300-1492: THE PERSISTENCE OF TRADITION AND TRANSFORMATION is an excellent choice for any college-level collection strong in cartographic or world history: it investigates the state of maps before Columbus, beginning with a 1436 atlas of ten maps produced by Bianco and using maps of the 14th and 15th centuries to consider how missionaries and merchants changed the state and presentation of the world. Makers and users of maps struggled with both technological change and changing world views brought on by discover, and mapmakers often blended old and new worlds to reconcile tensions between opposing viewpoints. The result is a fine, unusual perspective of world history and cartographic influences.

  1. This book has everything you could ask for from a travel essay. It's easy to read, humorous, suspensful and most important to me....recent. It took place in 1993. The one bad thing (keep in mind it's only 1) is that is speeds through the last week or so of the trip. Otherwise, I recommend it highly!

  2. The first 50 pages of this book were quite entertaining. But the remaining 150 pages were mediocre. Their trip through Latin America consisted mostly of getting drunk and picking up prostitutes. One bright note: It was interesting to learn of the difficulties the author encountered as he crossed from one border to another. However, I was expecting more from this book and was kinda disappointed.

  3. This book is about a man and his hearse, bound for Rio. Armed with plenty of alcohol and one sausage, he and two friends encounter everything from drunken prostitutes to corrupt politicians. Reading this is a must for any hearse enthusiast!!

  4. i loved the story line of the book. 3 guys with nothing better to do than get in a hearse and travel to rio. the encounters they had on the way were very funny to read about. i finished the book quickly because i kept wanting to find out what would happen next. i reccomend it to anyone who just wants some entertainment out of a book.

  5. This is one of the most entertaining books I have read in a while. Once you start you just can't put it down. It was very funny, had a great story line, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for sheer entertainment out of a book. It's not a how-to book, just a rollicking adventure story. I hope this isn't Mayle's only book!!

  1. My fiancée and I bought this book before we moved to New Mexico in March of 2000. It has proven to be a fantastic guide and we believe that it's the only book you need to explore the state on foot. Well organized by area with great trail descriptions and maps. A wonderful book!

  2. There are several books available on hiking in New Mexico. This was the one I wound up using the most on a recent trip to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Others, such as Parent's book, were also useful and I would therefore suggest having a look at all available guides. However, Hill's work includes legible photocopies of USGS topographic maps, and most of the newer hiking guides tend to feature homemade maps which give the user far less information.
In my particular case, the material on trails in and around the Guadalupe Reef was most helpful, as Bill Schneider's recently re-released book on the Guadalupe Mtns and Carlsbad Caverns National Parks doesn't include information on the trails in that part of the Reef in between these two parks, certainly worth visiting for those who are lucky enough to get to this area.
That the book is ten years old is an obvious drawback; things happen, even in a state like New Mexico that has so much public land. For example, a very hot fire had burned up most of the north face of Capitan by Roswell, rendering the trail up the NE side pretty faint. But of course, if you're not willing to ask questions of the locals in this fairly genial state, and do a bit of poking about yourself, you probably don't belong in a place with such rough and potentially lethal geography anyway.

  3. I purchased this book in 1996 while moving to attend UNM in New Mexico and learning (by asking) as a fairly new comer where to go and how strenuous the hikes were for a Jersey transplant. While building up my lung capacity on the Sandia Crest hike, I referred to this book over and over again to plan my hikes and really see this beautiful State from the trails. And I still recommend it to those folks traveling to New Mexico for the first or the 10th time. It is the best book written by a local devout hiker and used by local devout hikers. You can not go wrong with this book-it will show your topo maps, truly rate the hikes and give you the details needed to plan, it will be a treasured addition to your library and a good travel companion for beginners and seasoned hikers. Don't forget your water & happy trails, enjoy!!!!
