1. This book was very useful. However, it doesn't cover each state in depth, so if you are just visiting one state, you might look for a more comprehensive guide for that state.

This is the account of a hike the author and a friend took in 1966 through the Mahoosuc range: the roughly (and rough!!) 35 miles of the Appalachian Trail between Gorham and Grafton Notch (the route has changed a bit since then). Their 5-night hike is described in great detail, along with flashbacks to trips they took all the way back to 1929.
   I hiked this section last year and recommend the book to anybody who has been through the Mahoosucs (or plans to). It's probably more interesting to read after hiking than before, to compare their trip with yours.
   The most interesting aspect is seeing how things have changed since 1966. Many of the sheer rock climbs they did (near Goose Eye... or is it Goose High?..., for example) now have ladders. Hiking techniques have changed a bit (they brought an axe, thought about uprooting bushes to make a campsite, used balsam boughs in shelters, etc.): this is pre-LNT! And they were alone for days at a time (not likely in early September nowadays).
   A fascinating description of a tough hike (I take my hat off to the late Mr. Doan and his friend Claud).

1. The book has great illustration with a short history on the company or site shown. I think the background history could be a little more detatiled. There is also a typed mistake on the binding. The word "publisher" is spelled incorrectly. I was giving these as gifts and a person that had received it noticed the flaw. That is the only dissapointment to the book.



2. Peter Randall has outdone himself once again. This riveting book shows the "before" of many the scenes we are familiar with in the New Hampshire that all of us love. While Peter complained to me that too many trees had grown up since the original image was captured, I think we are a much improved place since the mid-1800's, instead. Going to any historical presentation of the Granite State in the past will confirm that. We need the trees to be the New Hampshire of today that we all enjoy! This Grand and Magnificent Place: The Wilderness Heritage of the White Mountains (Revisiting New England: the New Regionalism)
   by Christopher Johnson, should accompany this book for the historical references we need to see our passage to the present. Buy both as Amazon suggests. We have preserved ourselves quite well and keep getting better.



3. I moved to New Hampshire about a year ago and I wanted to find out some history about my new environs. I found this pictorial history and couldn't put it down. It is truly fascinating! It shows century-old photographs of significant landmarks side-by-side with present day photographs of the same site. Brief local histories and descriptions are also included. The photography is very well done. This book makes a great conversation piece and would grace coffee table and library alike.

1. We have found this book to be a great way to talk about nature & using your imagination with our boys. Our boys say that they enjoy it too. The photos are clever, imaginative, fun and very well done! It is a great book for all ages. It could be a kids' book or a coffee table book. Enjoy!

1. The woodland trail descriptions contained in "Nature Walks" are excellent and very well detailed. My only major complaint with the book is that the directions given to arrive at the base locations are NOT accurate. I have used this guide on two trails and both times I found street names to be wrong, and measurements to be off greatly. The book does not differ between dirt and paved roads, so bring the book, but also bring a map. On a more positive note, I felt my hiking experience was greatly enhanced by the information in the book.
