  1. For those interested in Railroads in general, and the New Haven Railroad in particular, you would be well advised to grab a copy of this book. As a 46 year veteran of the NH,PC,Conrail & Amtrak progression, I found it to be very accurate, concise & mostly very interesting reading, bringing the whole history of the New Haven in easily followed chapters (couldn't put it down once I started reading it). Also, there are many excellent photo's. I strongly recommend this book.

  2. Here is an outstanding history and pictorial survey of the late (but still beloved) NYNH&H. The author gives a basic (yet thorough) history of the railroad and describes what it did and how and why it did it. Thoughtfully selected and captioned pictures supplement the well-written text. The book includes maps which will provide readers not familiar with the scope and operations of the NH an idea of "what was where when." The quality of photo reproduction (color, black and white, sepia)is excellent. This will be a good addition to your collection of books on railroads in New England. Also, in this era of drastically overpriced and often indifferently produced railroad books, Lynch's work is refreshingly affordable.

  1. This is a fantastic book and should be a part of every fourth and fifth grade classroom. The story gives a soul stirring look at life for a minority in the late 1800's in such a way that children can relate to the emotions experienced and actions taken. The story shows how even a child can respond to challenge prejudice and unfair bias in a mature way. It would also be a great introduction to a unit on poetry.

  2. My sister loved the book so much. She asked me where I got it from. I prodly told her Amazon. It very hard to find quality books about African-American children for African-American children. Thanks!

  3. THIS IS A FANTASTIC BOOK. I COLLECT ANYTHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH BLACK DOLLS, WHICH WAS HOW I STUMBLED UPON THIS JEWEL. BUY IT. READ IT. APPRECIATE IT. ************

  4. Jessie Daisy Turner, an eight year old child in the late 1800s, lives with her parents and twelve siblings on a beautiful Vermont farm surrounded by daisies. Her father had settled in Vermont after he escaped from slavery in Virginia and joined the Union Army. Daisy is one of the only children of color in her classroom, and she is both embarrassed and angry when the teacher, in assigning poems to read and props to hold for a school program, singles Daisy out by giving her a doll with a black face. That moment was the first time someone had treated Daisy differently due to her skin color, and Daisy had trouble making sense of this experience.

Ultimately, Daisy is able to use her courage and her talent as a poet to show her teacher, classmates, and the community the importance of speaking out about race and racial equality. Based on a true story, Daisy and the Doll provides readers with an important reminder of the hurtful feelings associated with discrimination, even if the person responsible for the treatment may not have intended to be cruel. Although the book focuses on race, the astute reader will also notice an interesting discussion point related to gender, given that the teacher assigned dolls only to the girls.

  1. After reading this book, I was left a little confused. I am from Massachusetts, and have traveled extensively through New England, but some of these things I have never heard! Even so, I've found myself using many of these terms and pronunciations. Overall, it's a great book with a great deal of history. Off to pawk my caw in the Hawvawd Yawd next to a bucket, and eat t'other grinder...

  1. I thought that I knew Rhode Island fairly well after going to school there for four years. However, this book introduced me to so many beautiful places that it seems only locals know about. The maps are easy to follow if you want to get away from the Newport crowds and relax in serene surroundings.

  2. Rhode Island, accessible to all New England, truly offers quite a bit of exploration. Having done a fair bit of paddling in Northern California, I had yet to find an equivalent on the East coast; Matheson's guide helped fill that gap. As an avid sailor it is hard to pull myself away from the Newport action, but some days I want to appreciate the shores that are so often ignored. Lot's of history as well as beauty in this tiny state, and Discover Rhode Island truly delivers on its title.

  1. This is one of the easiest street atlas's that I have ever seen to find your way around. This atlas has a lot of details with city hall's, post offices, and other useful information in bold red so you can find the things that you need. It is clear and conscience and with this you should be able to find just about anywhere you wish to go. This is a must have for any traveler who doesn't know the area.
