3 comments about Sword In The Stone, The (level 2) (Hello Reader).
- Hey everyone out there! READ THIS BOOK! it is boring in some parts, but still good! This shows that T.H. White was an excellent author! He can spin magic with his fingers as well as J.K. Rawling and Brian Jacques! (Although they came after him!)
- The other review on this page mistakenly refers to this edition as the novel by T. H. White. Its not. This edition is a short adapation for young children of how King Arthur became king. Maccrone's Arthur is a young boy, and he is "tricked" by Merlin into freeing the sword from the stone. Boddy's illustrations are great.
- If you buy this book expecting to introduce your children to Arthurian myth, you will probably be disappointed. This book keeps only young Arthur, Merlin, and the barest outline of the beginning of the story of King Arthur.
If, however, you are looking for a reasonably fun, short story for a child who is past "Hop on Pop" but not ready to read anything much more complex, you will be very well pleased. The story is simple, but reasonably engaging, the vocabulary is also simple, and the illustrations are decent. This is the first "Hello Reader!" book I have bought for my 2nd grader for use in home schooling, but it will definitely not be the last.

5 comments about The Book of Druidry.
- Modern druidry traces its roots to the early 1700's and that is the tradition that this book is about. The Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids is still around and going strong and this book seems to be an introduction to the Order.
All that aside, it is a good read. A wealth of ideas, this book can be one step on your spiritual path. Or it can be just an interesting book about modern druids. Regardless of your beliefs, if you have any interest in the subject this is a good book. There are many other books available if you are interested in historical druids- "The Druids" by Stuart Piggott, for example.
- this book was more than I anticipated. i didn't know anyone who could fit that much information in any type of book Ross does it well and keeps it interesting. A must for anyone wishing to know history and druidism...
- This book is a must-have not because of its many historical/archeological inaccuracies but because it was one of the first produced by someone in recent history proclaiming to be following a Druidic Way. No one truly knows what the ancient druids did or believed with any exactness. It's left up to Anthropology and its constant flux of theories in order to interpret archeological finds versus historical documents and data to come up with a possible answer. Even so, no Anthropologist will tell you that there science leads to truth.
I think that some reviewers think other folk are stupid. The title of this book gives it all away. This is a book about "Druidry" and not really about the ancient historical persons known as druids. I had no misconceptions when reading this book. I knew it was a modern/romantic view of the druid religion through the eyes of someone who was part of the Ancient Order of Druids as well as the Martinist Order. As far as I know Ross Nichols was not a historian with a PhD from Oxford with scholarly publications in peer reviewed journals. As such I do not expect that kind of scholarly material in his work. I look more for the history of romantic Druidry and a peek into his spiritual path. I also expect to find (within this book) the cumulative lore and rituals as found within the AOD and his OBOD.
Purchase this book before it goes out of print!
- Crap.
The Book of Druidry by Ross Nichols was a huge disappointment for many reasons. Many of its assertions have been proven false by scholars, archeologists, and historians. It's like Nichols got most of his information from sources published in the 19th century and certainly before 1950. And it's just a big advertisement for OBOD in a lot of ways. In my opinion, this book is crap and not worth a dime, much less the price on the cover.
- Modern Druidry owes a lot to Ross Nichols. He removed the masonic ties and brought paganism back into the path. Inspiring and educating many followers of the modern Druidic Revival - we all owe a great debt of gratitude to this man. And his lessons live on through Philip Carr-Gomm. Everyone should have this book in their collection.

2 comments about Insiders' Guide to Portland, Maine (Insiders' Guide Series).
- This book is an excellent guide to Maine's largest city and its surrounding area. Unlike THE INSIDERS' GUIDE TO THE MAINE COAST, this one actually has information on local radio stations, in addition to the lowdown on Bull Moose Music and the Maine Mall, so it gives you a complete picture on how to keep your promise to your significant other regarding dance-music choices and purchases. Moreover, like the book on the Maine Coast, this one includes some ideas on where to get in shape for your significant other and/or your favorite celebrity. Overall, this is a book no one going to the Maine Coast can afford to be without.
- My wife an I are are thinking about relocating when we retire, and this book has made us think that Portland, ME is a place we should condider moving to. It has been instrumental in not only peaking our interest in the area but also in helping us organise a look see visit this summer. I highly recommend it.

5 comments about Curious New England: The Unconventional Traveler's Guide to Eccentric Destinations.
- I liked this book because I'm always bored and searching for something different to do. If your into New England culture like I am then you'll appreciate us eccentric Yankees! Some of this stuff I wouldn't drive out of my way for but it's enjoyable to read about it. Having grown up in the Boston area I already knew about most of these places(and lots that didn't make the book!)but if your planning to be in the area it's well worth your while to check out this book.
- My wife and I structured our honeymoon this month around this book, and we had a grand time touring its recommended destinations in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire. As we both work in horror publishing, we particularly enjoyed places like America's Stonehenge and H.P. Lovecraft's grave.
Buyers of this book should be forewarned to call ahead to every place they plan on visiting. We discovered that although this book was published this year, some of its information is already out-of-date. For instance, the aliens apparently beamed-up the UFO Museum two years ago. In some cases, the information was incomplete (e.g., the Occult Museum is only open to tour groups of 10 or more), or vague (e.g., road directions to the Bow Wow Villa (now no longer called that, by the way) and the Museum of Bad Art). Overall, though, the book has lots of interesting information, and our vacation wouldn't have been quite as nice if we hadn't read it.
- If you like the path less traveled, then this book is for you. If disneyland, and the flashy theme parks are the forefront of the American psyche, then this is the back roads. To my mind infinitely more interesting, I only wish he could chronicle the whole of the US, not just New england. Not to be missed!
- This is a terrific resource for those who will be travelling in New England and who are interested in seeing the more unusual sights the region has to offer. The book is divided into six chapters, each devoted to a state: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, and a map at the start of each chapter locates the cities covered. Each chapter contains entries listed alphabetically by city, and each entry contains a description, address, phone number, location, hours and sometimes a b&w picture. Entres include cemeteries, haunted houses, odd museums, unusual homes, monuments, etc. This book is lots of fun, contains great information and is well-written.
Terrific resource.
- Never did I know that there where so many odd places to visit in New England. This book goes state by state and lists places to visit that are famous and infamous. Man now I wish I had a GPS to find them! Get this book!!
