  1. I read this portrait of Tasha Tudor by her daughter Bethany with hunger and joy! I shall add it to my list of favorite books that I reread yearly at Christmas as a gift to myself. This intimate portait of one of this century's most unique women adds to a storehouse of wisdom not often found in the modern world. I feel drawn by this book to my own quest for that which inspires me. Bethany Tudor has written a memoir which will serve as inspiration for generations of creative women. The pictures are also exquisite and draw one into the peace and serenity which are Tasha's gifts to us.

  2. What a WONDERFUL book! I've always enjoyed Tasha Tudor, and bring out her books when I need to "escape" and have a pick-me-up. I happened upon this beautiful history written by her daughter, and have since shared it with others....Tasha Tudor is truly a blessing to us all, and to have this insightful, introspective piece shared by her daughter is beyond words. I HIGHLY recommend it to all who are so enamored with what Tasha has done with her life, and for those, such as myself, who wish they knew her personally--this book gives you a wonderful glimpse into this special woman's life, as well as her special family! Enjoy!

  3. If you are a fan of Tasha Tudor and can only buy one book about her---THIS is the one to buy. It is a fascinating biography accompanied by wonderful photographs. I've owned it for years---and treasure it. You will not be disappointed.

  4. I just received "Drawn from New England" in the mail today. I couldnt wait to sit down, brew a pot of tea and start to read the book--absolutely fabulous. This is a MUST HAVE if you are a fan of Tasha Tudor. The book transports you to Tasha Tudor Land--a great place to be in these stressful times. Thank you Bethany Tudor (& Tasha Tudor) for giving us all this precious gift!!! Cindy R

  1. These travel guides are the best! I have used them all over Europe, so decided to try it for the States. I like the city center maps, pictures and Place to Eat and Places to Stay. We have traveled for years with a plane ticket, ATM card and one of these travel guides. Makes being a gypsy easy!

  2. If you are going to take a tour of New England this is a must have book. It includes great ideas for touring around Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Connecticut. If you are only going to Boston you are probably better off buying the cheaper Boston guide but any tour of New England needs this book. The pictures are great and as always the division by region is a great way to see things. Whether you are touring the whole thing or just a few states this book is an excellent start.

  1. We are fortunate enough to have met Donna Kent, and yet she continues to surprise and engross us with her command of the supernatural!! We have read many books, some more authoritative, some less, concerning paranormal legends and lore of New England, but this one still manages to tell nuances of stories we THOUGHT we already knew!! Donna's warm personality, combined with her considerable first-hand paranormal experiance, makes this a must-have part of any devotee's libray!! We can only hope and pray that she is working on Part Two already!!!

  2. I was hoping for something new about these stories, but there wasn't.
It was an o.k. book if you've never heard them before, but definately not worth the cost for so few pages.

  3. This is a great book on Historicial Eastern Connecticut and lore. The
ghost stories only add to it. Most facinating stuff. Buy the book
    you will love it.

  4. This book is not good or bad, but it is okay but yet I could not put it down. There were some really good stories and them some that sound like a history textbook. I wished there were pictures of ghost orbs. Overall, it was a decent book but is a little overpriced.

5 comments about Boston 1775: The Shot Heard Around The World (Campaign).
  1. I bought this book at the Bunker Hill national monument recently, hoping it would fill in the gaps that David McCullough left out of his excellent 1776. Unfortunately, I finished the book only more desperate to find a book that not only solved my original dilemma but could also serve as an antidote to this one.

First, what the book is and what it is not. It is not a narrative of what took place in Boston in 1775. Instead, it is a sequential distillation of the military events of 1775 in and around Boston. To be fair, it is part of the Campaigns series so I should not fault it for not reaching for the same heights that McCullough did.

I would not have minded this approach, however, had the author been even remotely objective in his presentation of the known facts -- or perhaps even-handed, trading barbs against both sides. But, alas, Morrissey chooses to chide the colonists at every turn possible and to praise the redcoats for their forbearance and grace under pressure. It becomes laughable when page after page he continually defends the British taxes and the behavior of the British regulars while portraying the American leaders as having only profit motives for rebellion and the militia as misled rabble.

I am willing to hear of our own people's weaknesses: they are many. However, to fail to note that the other side was equally flawed in aspects of its approach grows wearisome after about page 10.

In sum, the book does have great maps and visuals -- the commentary on the etchings are first rate (except when they again accuse Americans of dealing unjustly with the British). I will keep the book on the shelf for reference, but will not recommend it.

  2. Great stuff! Great maps and information - based upon fact and not fiction.

  3. Hard to believe a Brit can write a good book on the American revolution but here it is.

Well organized and nicely written and also very balanced. A fun read. Maps are very good.

  4. How can anyone not love the Osprey series of books?

Whenever I'm researching a military campaign or would just like to know a more about what happened historically, I turn to the Osprey series of publications. They are well organized, written, and illustrated and provide the reader with state-of-the art maps and graphics.

This particular volume provides the essentials on the Battles of Concord/Lexington and Breed's (Bunker Hill). Author Brendan Morrissey covers the following:

    - The Road to War (Colonial America and Colonial policies)
    - The Seat of War (Boston in 1775)
    - The Opposing Commanders
    - The Opposing Armies
    - Lexington and Concord (19 April 1775)
    - Breed's Hill (17 June 1775)
    - The Seige of Boston
    - Aftermath
    - The Battlefields Today
    - Chronology
    - A Guide to Further Reading
    - Wargaming the Boston Campaign

In short, this neat book contains everything anyone needs to know about the opening campaign of the Revolutionary War that set the stage for a British defeat eight years latter.

  5. This book had great visuals, but the writing just did not flow. I love learning about the Revolutionary War, but found myself bored with what was written. The book was quite brief so even though some points were tedious, it was a quick read.

  1. This book is a great start when you are looking for places to bike in New Hampshire. However, beware of the maps provided in this book, they are very general and WILL GET YOU LOST. I would advise using the book to select a ride then getting a topographical map of the area, or, obtaining a Forestry Service map. Either way, you are preparing yourself for a fun day of riding in a great state! Let's face it, getting lost riding is fun, right up until it's nighttime and getting cold.

  2. This book is so perfect for family and for leisure riders! It is not the "carry-your-bike-up-the-legdge-and bushwhack-through-the-bushes" kind of book. Rather, you're biking on pine-needle covered trails a lot and having a chance to share in nature. It if perfect for starting a family tradition. The author does a super job of combining riding with your kids and doing other things (watching great blue herons fish, observing beavers building their lodges at a state reservoir, a visit to a science center on the Seacoast that's a part of a state park--Odiorne Point).

My kids look at this as such a family thing to do. I want to cultivate this kind of activity with my family so that video games and other sedentary activities take a back seat.

It's a gift to have all these state resources in the scenic state of New Hampshire readily available for the taking. Count me in! Let's go summer--load those bikes up. Don your helmets, kids. We're ready to roll. Ride softly!

  1. With each individual chapter including a profile of a local angling personality who is an expert on that particular region, A Fisherman's Guide To Maine covers eight distinct fishing regions including: Southern Maine; Rangeley Lakes Regions; Kennebec River; Moosehead Lake Region; Down East; Penobscot River; North Woods; and Aroostook County. A lifelong fisherman and biologist/entomologist, Kevin Tracewski reveals not only the best places to fish, but how to get to them, as well as what techniques and tackle to use. If you have an opportunity to fish the waters of Maine, then pack along a copy of A Fisherman's Guide To Maine to help you plan a successful and challenging itinerary.

  2. Really enjoyable fly fishing guide for those who love Maine, or are planning a trip to different regions. 154 pages, plenty of black & white photos throughout, with excellent color photos in the middle. One-page maps for each region add value. 95% of content is fly fishing for trout and salmon, and the only thing missing is more about smallmouth bass fishing with spin-casting tackle.
