  1. What I liked most about Mackinac Connection was the feeling that the author was sharing her personal favorites about the island - where to go, what to do, how much it would cost, etc. Mackinac Island came to life and made me want to go right away. The book is full of practical information and is an easy read. I read it in a few hours. And then started making plans to go there and visit.

  2. I've been to THE island twice now and am preparing for my third trip. But I wish I'd read this book before the first trip, for I'd have had a better time.

The book is short, yet chock-full of interesting and useful information concerning almost everything and anything a person would want to know about the magical place called Mackinac Island.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough! Keep up the good work in future editions, Ms. McVeigh.

  3. I worked on Mackinac Island for two summers- it is such a special place and a must to visit! This book is excellent-it gives you all the info you need on how to get there, what do do, where to stay, and all the little details you need to know ahead of time. For instance, she lists prices of all the places to stay, bike rental costs, ferry costs, ect. I havent been back to Mackinac Island in 6 years and Im so glad I got this book to help me plan my trip. I cant beleive I stayed away so long!

  4. I've been to Mackinac Island many many times before purchasing this book. I'd always felt as if I was missing so much of the Island - I WAS RIGHT! After I purchased this book - I was amazed at how much the Island has to offer that'd I'd been missing!

  5. I almost didn't buy this book because the cover looked kind of cheesey. I'm glad I did. Tons of information about how to get there and where to stay and what to do once you're there. I'll be taking this book with me when we visit the island in September.

  1. very limited in scope. The drawings are good enough for identification but they are common plants rather than some of the more unusual that are around.

  1. We just moved to Michigan and our family lives in Atlanta. This book provided excellent hints and tips on keeping our child entertained for the long trip. It is full of information for entertaining pit stops. Instead of searching for ways to distract our child, now we can take a quick look at this book and plan our trip easily.

  2. In a former life, I supervised the compilation and editing of thousands of directory pages each year. So I know a bit about the problems and goals of such information-publishing. And this one delivers. Specific information, concentrating on its topic, consistently presented. Plus, a good portion of fun and advice. If you're hitting the road down that long stretch of I-75, this is a solid and worthy investment.

  1. This book carefully explains each park, allowing for the advantages and disadvantages. I found it extremely helpful in planning our camping adventures in Michigan. I only wish Ohio's parks were as nice. This book is a must have for picking a place to camp anywhere in Michigan.

  2. My family and I enjoy camping and visiting the State parks all over Michigan. I have found this book to be very accurate, and helpful. There are easy-to-read descriptions of the parks, and great maps included. Color photographs would have been a nice feature to the book, but the loads of information inside make up for it. I highly recommend this book!

  3. Overall, this is a pretty good book. It claims to be a "Complete Guide" - but there is very little coverage of National Parks in Michigan. None that I could think of, and that I wanted to research, were listed.

The coverage of the State parks is good, however, if you're looking for National Park coverage, you'll need to look elsewhere.

  4. A good source for Michigan State and National parks. Good narratives and directions. However, park maps are small with no camping spot numbers marked, this is essential information when making reservations over the phone. If this info were included with the book... a solid 5 stars.

  1. Get your kids out-of-doors! Jim's books are all good - but this one fills an important niche, and does so just perfectly. It's really not comprehensive, as Michigan offers some excellent day-hiking, and much of it is appropriate for kids. But there's more than enough to keep you and young explorers busy, and Jim's excellent notes on each hike will help you decide which to try first. Kids over 9 or 10 (especially those already very out-doors oriented) might be bored with many of these. But that fact is part of what makes the book so valuable. These hikes are actually the harder ones to find - hikes that are especially appropriate for really young kids (and perhaps their weary or indoorsy parents). The trails are short, sweet, and especially entertaining.

  2. This book is a must-have if you're visiting Michigan with small kids. It is better than expected. There is great variety -- different types of hikes for different ages and abilities, even backpacking. The maps are good, and each hiking adventure is well described with all the information you need. Much more than hiking -- also camping and backpacking, as well as fishing and boating options. Many of the hikes are great for adults, too, who are just beginning to hike or backpack.
