  1. This is the second Book that I have read by Volgenau. This book tells the true story of modern day adventurers who dive deep in the Great Lakes to find shipwrecks. Fascinating story about the dangers of diving deep. Lots of interesting mariner and Great Lake history as well. Shipwreck Hunter: Deep, Dark & Deadly in the Great LakesMuch different than his first, Islands which is fascinating in a different way-great historical information and travel ideas about the Great Lakes.Islands: Great Lakes' Stories

  2. To be honest, I was a fan of Mr. Volgenau when he was a writer for the Detroit Free Press, but this book is really something else entirely. A little bit of fascinating history, lots of drama and a compelling human story as well. I had a hard time putting it down. Definitely recommended for those interested in diving, as well as fans of the maritime history of the Great Lakes. Mr. Volgenau's background as a journalist really shines in this brutally honest look at the dangerous world of deep diving and the people who have the sauce to do it. Loved it.

  3. The inside story on how most of the ships in the Great Lakes were found and are still being found.

  4. This engrossing book is an excellent tale of the Great Lakes, shipwreck hunting, and underwater diving. I personally know, or thought I knew, the main diver profiled, Danny Fader and his wife, Jeanne. Volgenau paints a very thorough, honest portrayal of both. They are two of the most honest, caring, endearing individuals one could ever meet. If there is any fault with the book, it is that the author tends to get too bogged down with the technical details of shipwreck hunting. There is such a thing as too much detail.

  5. It was a OK book about the same one sided as you get from some Andrea Doria Diver books. Why dose He try to glamorize these old men as historians and hero's of the deep when most are not! Most all are just plain salvors and looters of the deep. The book states that one main character in one sentence takes only pictures and in the next breath they are prying a strong box open. And in another Bio he states correctly that one divers problems with the local government (Law) and writes about the one case this diver won but forgets to mention about the cases he lost. Was this intentional? In closing it is nice to know how paranoid some of these old salvors are (were) If they were so innocent sharing locations and information would be the norm as some legitimate groups do today. And I think the author would of done a much better job in including some more facts and interviewing others out of the good old boy network.

  1. I am a freelance photographer that travels the State of Michigan. This book is by my side when I plan trips and when on the road. It is organized logically in a trip around the state. Each light has a complete and detailed map and distances are almost always correct

  2. Just this past May (2001), I toured to most of Lower Michigan's lighthouses. Starting in St. Joseph and traveling north to Old Mackinac, then up to Whitefish Point in the UP, then back down in the Lower Peninsula. Once in the Lower Peninsula, we followed Lake Huron south to Marine City and then crossed over into Canada for our trip back to Buffalo. All I can say is...WHAT A GREAT BOOK. The biggest thing that I like about it is it includes directions to each light. What a concept. This book, coupled with my Garmin Streetpilot GPS unit got us everywhere we wanted to go without guessing. All together, we visited about 44 lighthouses and took over 30 rolls of film. ...

  3. If you are planning a trip to visit lighthouses in Michigan and are not familiar with MI do not do it unless you buy this book. I used this book to visit about 50 of the 116 lights. I would have visited more except the rest are out in the water or on islands.
I have the previous edition of this book and it only has a
few color photos. This newer edition may have more. There are several B&W photos in the edition I have.
Laurie Penrose also has these books:
A Traveler's Guide to 100 Eastern Great Lakes Lighthouses
A Traveler's Guide to 116 Western Great Lakes Lighthouses

  4. Lots of great information and pictures of each lighthouse. We have used this book to visit many of the lighthouses and to keep track of our visits. I highly recommend it for Michigan lighthouse fans.

  5. This is the second book we've purchased from the author, we wore the first one out. This is incredibly detailed and makes it extremely easy to find these lighthouses. The detailed mapes and the history of each light is enlightening and heightens ones excitement to visit each one.

  1. In this short, succinct book, a collection of three lectures given in the 1980s, Stegner sums up the history, problems, and ever-so-bleak future of the American West. He paints the clearest and most inarguable case that has yet seen print against the overdevelopement of the West's water, land, and resources and, jarringly, recants his youthful appelation of the West as "the geography of hope."This should be required reading in every high school, every college, and every home in the West--make that the entire country--no, make it the world.

  2. These three essays are crisp, clear statements of Wallace Stegner's beliefs about the influence of the American West on American consciousness.

Please note, however, that these three essays appear with 13 others in Stegner's book _Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs_. With a total of 16 essays, that book is a much better value than _American West as Living Space_.

  1. When people think about trips to the 'wine country', Michigan does not readily come to mind. All that will change with "From The Vine: Exploring Michigan Wineries", a collaborative travel guide by Sharon Kegerries and Lorri hathaway who showcase fifty-one wine country destinations throughout the upper-Midwest state of Michigan. Organized by four designated 'wine trails' and 'beyond the trails', "From The Vine" includes anecdotal stories, features on artisans who handcraft chocolate and cheese, Old World grape stomping, cherry mead, hard cider, ice wine, and more. Profusely and beautiful illustrated throughout, "From The Vine" is enhanced with a useful glossary and a bibliography that travelers through Michigan's wine country will find of immense interest. Informed and informative, "From The Vine" is an entertaining and very highly recommended addition to personal reading lists for anyone traveling through Michigan whether as a day trip or part of an extended vacation. Needless to say, no Michigan college or community library should be without at least one copy of "From The Vine" in their collection!

  1. I highly recommend this to anyone who's interested in waterfalls. The photography is very nice and the directions are clear and concise. My family and I visited twenty-four waterfalls so far this summer/fall in the Marquette area using this book.

  2. I carry this book with me whenever I go into the U.P. I like to photograph the waterfalls of Michigan and this guide is constant travel companion. The book gives clear directions on how to get to each of the falls. The falls are broken down into the corresponding counties. Not only is this a unique guide it is a comprehensive guide to Michigan falls. The only minor enhancement that could be made to the book to make it even better is more photographs of the falls. However, the bit of mystery of what the falls will look also is a good motivation for exploring more and more. There are more to Michigan falls than Tahquamenon. I highly recommend Bond Falls. This book is the bible to exploring the falls.

  3. I highly recommend this book! We have many visitors to the UP and this book is a great asset for day trips. It is so well organized, the maps of both the counties and the individual falls as well as the written directions are very clear. I know we'll be getting alot of use out of this book and I encourage you to buy it and see all the waterfalls for yourself!

  4. The book preview doesn't tell you that it ONLY has ONE waterfall in Michigan's Lower Pennisula, which is disappointing. Perhaps I should have known better. Alas, it is getting us motivated to travel North to gaze at the beauty in the Upper Pennisula where there are 198 more wonderful waterfalls. I had no idea there were so many there. The book seems very organized, more so than another waterfall book I have from another state. I can only comment on the location of where the waterfalls are with slight disappointment. Seems like it will be a good guide when we get to the UP.

  5. This is for the amature to expert hiker. Find those hard to find, but just off the beaten track waterfalls all over Michigan.
