1 comments about Seasons of Mackinac (Michigan Photographic).
- This book is an awesome photographic chronicle through all four seasons on Mackinac Island. The island is a trip back in time to a quieter, more peaceful existence that few of us know anything about in today's hustle and bustle world. Having spent 8 summers vacationing on the island, this book gives me a vivid glimpse into the other seasons. My daughter-in-law bought this book on the island this summer, and I loved it so much I bought another copy as a gift for a friend who had never visited the island. I would recommend this book highly.

2 comments about My Michigan.
- Not just for Michiganders (I've never been to Michigan!) this is an absolutely beautiful and artful book composed of colored blockprints & simple, but lovely prose, printed on handcrafted deckle-edge paper. The book emanates a certain hush and reverence through its subtle palatte and the careful arrangement of images with negative space. (How rare to find an artist, as is this author, who has an eye for negative space and understands the important contribution that this quiet space gives to a work!) Artists (printmakers, in particular) will awe at the artistry of the author, Gwen Frostic, and at her repertoire of subjects, which ranges from flora and fauna to Michigan bridges & architecture to blue skies and snowy scenes. Writers will appreciate both the content & delivery of her prose, which absolutely compliments the images and never once lapses into sentimentality. ALL readers will delight at the many quiet surprises, (such as the unexpected image of the frog on swamp grass peering between pages). Aesthetically and literally, this book is purely a work of art, and your bookshelf will be richer for its presence.
- I'm a big fan of Gwen Frostic - love this book about Michigan!

1 comments about Compass American Guides: Michigan, 2nd Edition (Compass American Guides).
- I should have known better than to purchase the Compass Guide to Michigan. I owned a travel bookstore for 9 years and I chose not to carry this series in my store. Lots of pretty pictures, lots of history (yes, that is important), but not enough practical info. Plus, these guides are heavy! I think the only other guide available was the Moon Handbook to Michigan. Moon Handbooks are wonderful guides, but they are not updated often enough and the shopper must check the publication date; in this case I think it was 2002. So if you are looking for a lot of information about lodging, restaurants and activities, the Compass Guide is not the answer. Hopefully, Moon will update their handbook to Michigan soon.

5 comments about Lighthouses of Lake Michigan: Past and Present.
- I own almost every book ever written about Great Lakes lighthouses and this is the best one yet. It has a brief history of all the present Lake Michigan lighthouses, along with color pictures and directions to get there. In addition, many lighthouses are shown in historical pictures from the National Archives, US Coast Guard files, or the authors own postcard collection. Long-gone lighthouse are also remembered and pictured when possible. I hope this is a first in series covering all the Great Lakes. If you have this book, you don't need any other about Lake Michigan lighthouses.
- There has never been a more complete, well written, accurate
and better illustrated book on Lake Michigan lighthouses.Pictures of existing and long-gone lighthouses are beautiful, and frankly my wife and I can't put it down. This is a must have.
- I thought the author did a wonderful job on this book. I hope he someday does the rest of the great lakes of Michigan the same way. It has been a pleasure to read. Plus it makes a great gift.
- This book is fantastic. It gives you great information about the history of each of the lighthouses around Lake Michigan and reasons why some may have changed over the years. The pictures are great! It is also one of the few books that I have come across that is so complete. I also like how he included the status of each light and how to access it. I hope the author does another book like this about Lake Superior.
- I purchased SEVERAL other books. However, I really ONLY NEEDED THIS ONE. It is BY FAR the best of the other books on Lake Michigan I got.
DON'T purchase any others YOU WON'T NEED THEM and will save money on getting JUST THIS ONE.
It has COLOR PHOTOS OF ALL THE LIGHTS, HISTORY, LOCATION MAPS AND WRITTEN DETAILS DIRECTIONS on how to get to each light. It also has a list on the ones with: museum's, hauntings, Tower access, catwalks and MORE!
WHAT A BOOK, WHAT AN AUTHOR.
Please, please please do write more of these books ON ALL THE LIGHTS OF THE USA!

1 comments about Dennis McCann Takes You for a Ride: Stories from the Byways of Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois.
- When reading of the locations Dennis goes to you feel you were in the back seat with him. He gives very vivid detail of exact places.
One place he reviewed was Manistee Michigan the Victorian Port City. the Milwaukee House was owned by Great Grandfather and Grandfather Diefenbach and we know the information was factual and interestingly portrayed. There are many such articles that make you want to go to these byways he deplicts.

1 comments about Natural Michigan: A Nature Lover's Guide to 228 Attractions.
- This is a cheerful 245-page guide from the same folks who gave us publications such as "Canoeing Michigan Rivers" and "A Guide to 199 Michigan Waterfalls." It is designed to assist birdwatchers, cross-country skiers, hikers, campers and other nature lovers in their search for Michigan's flora and fauna, or a quiet place to picnic. The book is a little too large for your glove compartment, but you'll still want to store a copy in your car for those weekend outings, or for an hour's walk in green and peaceful surroundings.
"Natural Michigan" doesn't list state or national parks (see author's "Michigan State and National Parks: A Complete Guide"), just the smaller Michigan beauty spots that might go undiscovered by all but the nearest residents. It includes nature centers, sanctuaries, game areas, arboretums, and even a wastewater treatment area. Both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas are covered. Each of the 228 attractions is described in terms of its most unique or eye-catching features such as this depiction of the St. Clair Woods Nature Sanctuary near Port Huron: "The area also hosts ferns, shrubs, and wildflowers, including three different types of trilliums..." I've lived in Michigan all of my life and only knew of two types of trilliums. If these spring flowers happen to be your favorites, also check out the Trillium Trail Nature Preserve near Memphis, or the Trillium Ravine Plant Preserve near Niles. If you prefer a dollop of history along with the wonders of nature, try the Besser Natural Area near Alpena: "Nearly a mile of wild, undeveloped Lake Huron shoreline, a ghost town, [and] a sunken ship in a small lagoon...are attractions to this 137-acre preserve." A map, directions, fees (if any), schedule, and prominent feature symbols are included with each area's description. The only omission that might have proved useful is a cross-reference by prominent feature, such as ski trails.
