- The 'Hiking Michigan' guidebook was ok, but I expected more. The book is adequate for casual walking. Unfortunately, the maps were not well done. Both the trail maps and the directions to the trailheads lacked important detail. The guidebook did not have a summary matrix of trail information that would have been helpful in planning outings. On the positive side, the descriptions of the trails were accurate. In addition, the book includes introductory sections on clothing, equipment, and trail ethics. Therefore, 'Hiking Michigan' is a good starter-book for the novice, but it falls short compared to true hiking guides.
- I found this book to be very helpful on my first foray into the Northern Michigan wilderness. My wife and I walked the Herman Vogler trail and the Ocqueoc Falls trail while visiting friends on a vacation in Onaway, MI and found the book to be very accurate (maps and descriptions). Both trails are within a 30 minute drive of each other, and are must see's if you are in the area. I cannot speak of any other trails accuracy(s), but once we make another trip up north we will be sure to check out another trail or two and let you know! Good book, good price, I would (and have) recommend this book to anyone interested in hiking Michigan.
- This book has good reviews on trails and is very helpful. There are some trails it does not mention that I would have liked to learn more about but it does have a lot of good information.
- It was a gift and I don't know what he thinks, but the shipping and recieving was great.

- I've been to THE island twice now and am preparing for my third trip. But I wish I'd read this book before the first trip, for I'd have had a better time.
The book is short, yet chock-full of interesting and useful information concerning almost everything and anything a person would want to know about the magical place called Mackinac Island. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! Keep up the good work in future editions, Ms. McVeigh.
- I worked on Mackinac Island for two summers- it is such a special place and a must to visit! This book is excellent-it gives you all the info you need on how to get there, what do do, where to stay, and all the little details you need to know ahead of time. For instance, she lists prices of all the places to stay, bike rental costs, ferry costs, ect. I havent been back to Mackinac Island in 6 years and Im so glad I got this book to help me plan my trip. I cant beleive I stayed away so long!
- I've been to Mackinac Island many many times before purchasing this book. I'd always felt as if I was missing so much of the Island - I WAS RIGHT! After I purchased this book - I was amazed at how much the Island has to offer that'd I'd been missing!
- I almost didn't buy this book because the cover looked kind of cheesey. I'm glad I did. Tons of information about how to get there and where to stay and what to do once you're there. I'll be taking this book with me when we visit the island in September.
- A wonderful guide to the do's and don'ts of visiting Mackinac Island. Not only does it tell all of the "fudgies" out there about the great spots on the island, it all trains you how not to look like a dork while visiting - or looking like the traditional tourist. You'll really enjoy this book and its easy-to-read (almost elementary) style. It would have been nice to have more detail on particular exhibits that have been there for a long time - but you can't have everything. I highly recommend this book because it's one of the only ones out there that are decent.

- Not just for Michiganders (I've never been to Michigan!) this is an absolutely beautiful and artful book composed of colored blockprints & simple, but lovely prose, printed on handcrafted deckle-edge paper. The book emanates a certain hush and reverence through its subtle palatte and the careful arrangement of images with negative space. (How rare to find an artist, as is this author, who has an eye for negative space and understands the important contribution that this quiet space gives to a work!) Artists (printmakers, in particular) will awe at the artistry of the author, Gwen Frostic, and at her repertoire of subjects, which ranges from flora and fauna to Michigan bridges & architecture to blue skies and snowy scenes. Writers will appreciate both the content & delivery of her prose, which absolutely compliments the images and never once lapses into sentimentality. ALL readers will delight at the many quiet surprises, (such as the unexpected image of the frog on swamp grass peering between pages). Aesthetically and literally, this book is purely a work of art, and your bookshelf will be richer for its presence.
- I'm a big fan of Gwen Frostic - love this book about Michigan!

- Read this book real careful and check out the facts for yourself. I've heard this writer say stuff in the classroom like the epidemics that killed off so many Indians were an accident because the Indians didn't have immunities, and that there was no jenocide of Indians by white people. I don't know if what's in his book is impartial. I also thought the writing was real hard to get into. I couldn't even get finished with the book.
- Very interesting read. Well written and compelling, with a great introduction and brilliant portrayals of the early explorers of the 1800's.
- From a detailed map to a great introduction, this book does not fail to please the casual reader or the scholarly historian. Well worth reading, especially if you're interested in Exploration or Western History in general.
