  1. I found this book in a bookstore on a rainy day and did not put it down till the last page was read. Having spent meny summers in Michigan this book directed me to a few new spots I had not known about. A few made for some interesting sight seeing and photography. In particular, "The ghostly Ruins of Marlborough". I spent the better half of a hot summer day walking, climbing and exploring the "the Ruins of Rome". Nearby North Lake provided a place to cool down before dinner. If you explore the back roads when you travel this gives you some interesting spots to stop. I would have liked it if there were better maps of the locations in the book but overall it made for several interesting days. If you like reading about the history of Michigan or ghost towns this is a good book. I now know how I want to spend next summer. Looking for "Ghost Towns Of Michigan Part 2"

    Brian

  2. i have lived in mich my whole life and spent many summers up north. i got this book right around the time i recieved my licence, so this book made up north interesting for a kid. my brother and i drove to the area's near us, and managed to locate two of them. we found an old cemetary, and the the oldest head stone was about 1920ish. we also found ruins of a house and a very old rusted ford. it was fun. if you are ever in the area get a map of the northern half of the state and try to locate them. its a great time to spend with your kids.

  3. I just got this book in the mail and it is very intersting. I am originally from Michigan so this book holds an extra special interest for me. I reccomend this book to anyone interested in ghost towns in general or in Michigan ghost towns in particular. The book is very imformative. 5 stars.

  4. What constitutes a ghost town can be widely interpreted, I suppose, but readers should be aware that quite a few of the towns dealt with in this book are alive and healthy; almost all of them can still be found in the DeLorme Michigan Atlas. Be that as it may, Larry Wakefield knows a good story when he sees one, and all the towns listed here have a good story or two attached to them. Most of the towns are located in the southern part of the state, and Wakefield gives good directions (mostly) for those venturing into the field. The locator maps for each town, however, are a bit crude, and the star indicating the location of Superior which he has north of Grand Haven should be down by Holland. Also the directions for Kensington in Oakland County seem fuzzy (US-16 is actually I-96 and Turtle Lake is now Kent Lake). But the book is entertaining and well written, and those who like to mosey around small towns or placenames on a map that once held greater promise than they show today should find much to admire in this book.

  1. This book is an awesome photographic chronicle through all four seasons on Mackinac Island. The island is a trip back in time to a quieter, more peaceful existence that few of us know anything about in today's hustle and bustle world. Having spent 8 summers vacationing on the island, this book gives me a vivid glimpse into the other seasons. My daughter-in-law bought this book on the island this summer, and I loved it so much I bought another copy as a gift for a friend who had never visited the island. I would recommend this book highly.

  1. The book was absolutely fabulous! It was as if the reader had been invited to take part in the michigan farm. It was heart-wrenching, yet funny at times. It made me remember that I'm a farm-boy at heart!

  2. I did not grow up in the Great Depression, nor Michigan, when and where this book takes place. I grew up on a farm in Iowa in the 1960s, yet this book described my childhood perfectly! The work ethic, parental discipline and life in rural America Jager describes is now a part of history. I am thankful he captured it so well for future generations. If you grew up on a farm, you will love this book as well!

  3. I couldn,t put it down, but I wanted it to last...Every page evoked a memory and a smile, or an outright laugh. It paints a picture with broad stokes, and fine insight. Wit and wisdom and loveable folks throughout...Sorry to see it ended.

  4. I have the audiobook version and I feel like I lived every moment of Jager's childhood. It's well written, open and honest; it's not only interesting, but a journey through the history of the American family farm.

  1. Very nice book, and beautifully packaged. Note that this book is essentially a duplicate of the book by George May, published in 1987.

The differences are that there are three new chapters written by the co-author, and there are some editorial differences in the text. This would be a good book to purchase for those libraries who need to replace a dilapidated 1987 edition, or for those interested in the new chapters added to the original book.

George May's work is always worth reading.

  1. I should have known better than to purchase the Compass Guide to Michigan. I owned a travel bookstore for 9 years and I chose not to carry this series in my store. Lots of pretty pictures, lots of history (yes, that is important), but not enough practical info. Plus, these guides are heavy! I think the only other guide available was the Moon Handbook to Michigan. Moon Handbooks are wonderful guides, but they are not updated often enough and the shopper must check the publication date; in this case I think it was 2002. So if you are looking for a lot of information about lodging, restaurants and activities, the Compass Guide is not the answer. Hopefully, Moon will update their handbook to Michigan soon.

  1. These striking aerial photos show views of northern Michigan's most beautiful landmarks and terrain. The book includes many views of Michigan's beautiful lakes and scenery with seasonal photos from spring through winter. Not only are the pictures exceptionally well done from a technical standpoint, but it is evident that Marge Beaver has the eye of an artist as well. It was fun seeing all the places in Michigan I've visited, but also to find new locales in Michigan that I hope to visit one day.

  2. I just received my personal copy of Marge Beavers latest effort ABOVE THE NORTH. If any book comes close to illustrating the beauty of Michigan, this is the one! She has combined her love of aviation with her talents in photography to produce one of the most beautiful "coffee table" books currently available. The color, detail and beauty of the state as show by Ms Beaver just hits you in the eye and is a book i definitely want to share with others.

  3. I stopped in the bookstore and this book caught my eye with the tremendous aerial photo of South Manitou Island in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. I've hiked there many times and was impressed by this beautiful view of the entire island.

When I looked through the book I knew this was one to share with friends and family. There are unique views here of many of the most beautiful spots in Michigan from Tawas Point to Garden Island. The views are all aerial photographs done with great artistry and perspective. There are views from on high of Manistee and the Lake Michigan Shore at sunset with the sky full of color and the lake spread out to the horizon and the lights of the city seemingly twinkling below, and others of green emerald forested islands settled in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron with a surround of aquamarine waters.

There are dozens of "coffee table books" full of beautiful pictures of the Great Lakes. It is not difficult to obtain pictures when there are so many scenic coastlines in the state. What sets this book apart and makes it by far the best photo book of the Great Lakes is the selection of the images, their color and the depth that the aerial perspective provides. You have probably not seen the Mackinaw Bridge as shown here from up in the clouds looking down across the span to the shore at St. Ignace and the eastern reach of the Upper Penninsula. I think anyone with an interest in the land and shores of northern Michigan would be enthralled with this book and would enjoy sharing it with others as I have.

  4. This book has incredible arial pictures of Michigan. We bought 3 to give as gifts to other Michigan lovers. What a hit!
