- The Rough Guides are my favorite guide books, and this guide to Baja California is great, too. It's been invaluable in planning my trip next month. Well-written, to boot.
- This is so well-written it is a good read from cover-to-cover. I consider it the best Baja guidebook on Amazon and second only to the AAA guidebook. This is one of the very few that I would consider a must-have on a trip to Baja. Tons of current, factual information and recommendations.

5 comments about Streetwise Mexico City Map - Laminated Center City Street Map of Mexico City, MX - Folding pocket size travel map with integrated metro map including lines & stations.
- Worst map/purchase ever made, never again.
Look like Mexico City is totally incomplete & I know Mexico City.
This was purchased for a friend who is traveling to the city of Mexico.
- This isn't quite a streetmap of Mexico City so if you don't intend to buy a guide of the city then you won't be disappointed by this map. What it does show you are some less than ideally detailed maps of the center city (from Chapultepec to about the historic score) and a little north and south. Not that useful if you wanted to make it out to other parts of the city like Xochimilco for example. This is not that useful unless you plan on staying confined to this area of the city.
- I don't know why one can't buy a full map of Mexico City -- I guess the place is just too big?? This map came in handy, though, during a recent trip. The metro markings really helped. It folds up and you can take it out while ducking inside a Sanborn's or something so you don't look like a complete lame-o.
- waste of money - out of date, full of typos (the "Isreal" embassy, "Jaurez"....doesn't inspire confidence in the accuracy of the info) wish I had gotten the guia roji instead.
- This is a must have map for the traveller to Mexico City who likes to wander. The streets are well marked on both the map and in the city. The only section that seemed weak, was the map of Coyoacan, which was less detailed than the rest of the map. Nonetheless, it was enough detail to get by and wander around on foot freely.

5 comments about Cozumel Can-Do Travel Guide & Map.
- Excellent coverage of Cozumel. ... Maps are available of Cancun, Cozumel, Riviera Maya, Playa de Carmen, and soon Isla Mujeres and Chichen Itza.
I buy new maps yearly, because the changes year to year are so drastic. Get one or all before you go!
- I was disappointed in the map, thought it was more, but that's not your fault. Service was excellant as always.
Thank you
Kathy Crone
- We just returned from Cozumel, and used this map a lot. It had great advice, and was easy to read. There were lots of tips packed into a convenient package.
- I just returned from Cozumel and this map was a great thing to have. It helped us a lot before going on our trip to kind of plan what we were going to do. It had great insider information that I trusted 100%. Every comment on the map was completely true. I highly recomend this to anyone planning a trip to Cozumel.
- The map is terrific, but what sets this apart from an ordinary map is all the additional information and travel tips you receive along with it. It provides a wealth of "quick" reference information by identifying each location and then summarizing the different activities included in them. I haven't actually had the opportunity to use it on location yet, but it has been a tremendous aid in planning our travel and activities.

5 comments about A Guide Book to Highway 66.
- This book reads like a good fireside friend, or an uncle, or even Tom Snyder in his famous Roadside Companion. It's a wonderful spin back in time to the period just before "Getting your kicks" became the American pastime, and provides a postcard view of the towns, cities and countryside that was America not so long ago. As an 8-time veteran of Route 66 roadtrips (and all within the last 5 years), I have to admit I'm chomping at the bit to get back out on the road and try to find traces of some of the landmark places and hamlets Rittenhouse has recorded in this highly usable travel guide. Kudos to the U of New Mexico Press for reissuing this book as a facsimile of the original (no updates save for a warm intro to the new edition by the author himself!), and doing so at a very accessible price point. A must have for any 66 roadie's collection.
- This reproduction of the original 1946 guide to Route 66 is an invaluable companion for any trip on the Mother Road. Not only does it give you a feel for what the road was like at the dawn of America's love-affair with automobile traffic, but it gives you a feel for the psychology of those pioneers who attempted to drive the Route.
While we're now accustomed to well-marked Interstates with easily located on and off ramps, early cross-country routes were less highway and more stitched and patched collections of local roads, filled in with connectors and dotted with small towns. The map was, in essence, the route itself. Following these early routes was not trivial, and drivers had to take caution not to find themselves stranded without food, lodging or fuel. Rittenhouse's guide was the first comprehensive effort to assuage fears of long-distance car travel, and provide a mile-by-mile guide to services and sights along Route 66. While most of the sites (and most of the services) he documents are long-gone, the sense of wonder that is Route 66, and the thrill of coasting into the cities through which it threads, remains fully intact. No one should drive Route 66 without a copy of this in the glove box. Doing so would rob your of a good deal of the road's history. Note to West Coasters: though the book is arranged from Chicago to LA, it can just as easily be read backwards for the Eastbound trip.
- The road out west from Chicago to LA can be tedious at times, and this cheap and fun little guide was a great way to pass the time. It's an exact reprint of the 1946 first edition about HIghway 66. I was able to call out towns and gas stations that were now in a shambles or abandoned on the side of the road. Fun book, right price, and it made my trip more interesting.
- First off, this book is not a map. It's a guidebook to Route 66 written in 1946. However, it's something you WILL want on any Route 66 trip. Why? Because you'll be passing ruins and dried-up blown-away towns, and this book was there before they blew away. This book will tell you what you're seeing now though the eye of "then".
Team this book up with the "Route 66 Adventure Handbook (3rd Ed) by Drew Knowles, and you'll really add something to your trip.
We used the "Adventure Handbook" to tell us what's in each town now, then referred to the Rittenhouse to see what each town used to offer many years ago. It was facinating! Some towns offered so much back in '46, and today there's nothing there, or very little. Other towns seem to not have changed much in 60 years. I give it 5 stars for the history it will impart to you along the way.
It's a cheap addition to anyone's arsenal for travelling Route 66, and one you really will be glad you had when you're done.
- I will be traveling cross country and bought this for that purpose. It's smaller than I expected but I will use it as a reference.

5 comments about Cities of Gold: A Journey Across the American Southwest.
- I thought this was an outstanding book, so well researched before their trip and so well written describing the areas, the problems encountered and their combined solutions to those situations. I've met Walter Nelson, Mr. Preston's partner on the trip, and that made me understand their friendship and their determination to make it happen even more. It was a great book and I highly recommend to anyone interested in the history of the Western United States.
- This was a truly fascinating book- a description of the trials and dangers of traveling cross-country on horseback, and how strained relationships with close traveling partners can become. But the best of the book was the detailed history of the areas traveled, including journals of the early Spaniards, priests, and legends and history of the various tribes of the area. A true-life adventure story with (painless) history lessons.
- A great read!
I would add to the above "for a man" but was lent my first copy by a woman friend. She loved it also.
It is much more than the History of the 1540 expedition into north America by Coronado, although that is very interesting, it is a trip by three guys who don't have the slightest idea what the hell they are getting into, and we get to live right there with them every step of the way.
This book really demonstrates the abilities of someone who uses stubbornness to their advantage. Great writing.
My only problem with it: Not enough Photos...
- Mount Dragon
Thunderhead
Tyrannosaur Canyon
If you have read any of these Preston/Child books (Tyrannosaur was a Preston solo effort) you have enjoyed the spectacular word pictures that brought the landscape of the American Southwest to life in your mind's eye. If you ever wondered why it seemed so real, so vivid, you need to read Cities of Gold. In it, Preston documents his 1989 retracing of the original journey of Coronado, weaving back and forth between the two epic expeditions. It is a tale of majesty and awe and wonder, and it is a warning to those who would dare to venture into uncharted territory: This way lies madness!
- I bought this book to give to a friend who loves the Southwest and its history. I opened it one night just to get a taste of the story because Preston is one of my favorite fiction writers.
I was hooked and I haven't put the book down since. It is a story full of adventure and mystery and it is teeming with history. But there is humor and honesty too as the men travel in unfamiliar territory on horses they are not used to riding.
This gets my highest rating. If you like adventure, if you love the southwest, if you love the early history of the west, this is a book you will love!

5 comments about The Grand: The Colorado River in the Grand Canyon a Photo Journey.
- This book has page after page of remarkable, vibrant photographs. From the extraordinary landscape, to the animals that inhabit the surroundings, to people running wild rapids--this book offers more than just a glimpse into the Grand Canyon. An absolute must-have for everyone-- be it nature lovers, river runners, or if you just want to admire the scenery, I can highly recommend this book!
- What a treat it is to read this book! Page after page of glorious photographs beckon with their beauty. The pictures capture a wide range of scenes--from the river to its vegetation, animals and canyons. A thoroughly enjoyable book to be read and reread.
- This is a book I highly recommend to all my friends who are contemplating a trip down the Colorado in the Grand Canyon. After spending two weeks on a raft trip in the Grand Canyon, this is one of the best guides I have seen about the trip, complete with pictures.
- I recently purchased this book for my boss who when white water rafting in the Grand Canyon. He loved the book, he related to alot of the pictures and was happy to relive the moment again.
- Wonderful photos and descriptions. I felt that I had visually rafted the Grand Canyon and since I'm going to do just that in June of '08 I'm more pumped up having seen some of the sights I'll see in person and so lets go rafting.

5 comments about Waterproof Baja California (Mexico) Map by ITMB.
- This is an excellent map. It helped us wander our way through Baja over spring break. It's plasticized material stands up to all kinds of abuse, and it contains an impressive amount of detail and useful information. Couple it with The Rough Guide to Baja California (Rough Guide Travel Guides) and you're ready for a guide time.
The only other map for Baja I'd recommend is the AAA one, free to members.
- I love maps, and getting one that is water proof is the best laminate for the fact it still folds nice an stores in the map drawer or libary shelf. This came fast and was in perfect condition.
- Great map. Water resistant would be more accurate description. A must map for Baja travel. Only complaint of its functionality would be some typos in names and legend icons. Complaint of its aesthetics would be the hideous photo on the cover. Baja is a beautiful peninsula, surely there were a thousand better images to feature on the cover of this map. Get it anyway.
- I got the map and have spent hours looking at it. If there is a more detailed, current map of Baja I haven't seen it. I like that the peninsula is divided on both sides, allowing for a fantastic level of detail. The texture is also very durable, though I'm not sure that it is truly waterproof. If I could only take one publication with me to Baja, this would be it.
- This is the latest of many maps I've purchased for Baja, and by far it's the best one! The things I love the most: it's basic topographic, with perennial streams and springs marked, and road-quality marked the best of any of the maps I have; the settlements and important points-of-interest (gas stations, etc.) are well- and accurately-marked; and it's waterproof (in case you spill your cafe on it). If they come out with another series that is more detailed (say a 1:250,000 scale), I'll be ecstatic!

5 comments about Sport Fish of the Gulf of Mexico.
- If your trying to find out what is on the end of your line... I would suggest this book. It has good illustrations of many fish and a few other interesting facts about them. It also covers the whole gulf area rather than selecting a state or two. The only draw back is it doesn't include great detail on how to catch each particular fish.
- This book is well written and nicely cross referenced. When it's not on my boat during a fishing trip, it stays in the throne room for good reading. The only complaint I have is that the author seems to think nearly every fish in the sea is tasty. Only a few of the fish in the book are labeled as "Poor" when it comes to food quality.
- I enjoyed reading each and every species entry. The author is obviously a fish enthusiast when it comes to cuisine due to the fact that 90% of the animals he lists are described at the very least as 'tasty'. The illustrations are exquisite and the descriptions for each fish type are thorough. I would recommend this book for anyone new to fishing the Gulf of Mexico.
- With so many restrictions and diffrent types of fish in the gulf, the last thing you want is an illegal fish. "Sport Fish of the Gulf" is on my vessel when I fish!
- After shopping for a book of this nature, I got tired of the book store prices and was glad when I found it at Amazon.com. Shortly after placing my order, I found it at Wal-Mart for about $7.00 more. Always Low Prices should be Amazon's slogan. Great book to own with great details such as: food quality, how to fish for, avg. size and weight etc.

5 comments about The Cruising Guide to Central and Southern California: Golden Gate to Ensenada, Mexico, Including the Offshore Islands.
- From a recent sailing trip out of Santa Barbara through the channel islands I can tell you that this book is invaluable. His treatment of safe ports and refuges (arranged very well but conditions) was fantastic and kept us out of danger.
- We have used Brian Fagans guidebooks from SD to SF for many years, but this is the best of the lot. We recently led a cruise to the Channel Islands, and made this a "must" for the cruisers, all of whom praised it highly. Really THE guidebook to coastal cruising in Central-Southern California---and a bargain!
- This is a good book for those interested in cruising the west coast, you can always get something out of the book if you plan to make that trip up the coast, lots of good information to research and make plans from.
- After cruising in the Pacific NW for the past two years using the Douglass and Hemingway guides and the Waggoner Guide, we were admittedly spoiled. If that's the quality you expect, you won't get it here. On the other hand, we couldn't find an alternative, and this is better than nothing. The harbor diagrams were nice, but there aren't enough of them and what there are don't provide enough detail. The landmarks mentioned in the text often don't appear in the diagrams. We also noticed inaccuracies, but this could be due to time. For example, the fuel dock in Morro Bay wasn't where the guide said it was. However, the woman at the Visitor Information Center also thought it was in the direction indicated in the book. (For others looking for it, it's across from marker 12, not beyond 18.)
- I found this book to contain many useful tidbits of information, especially about prevailing weather conditions. The author gives insightful and non obvious ways for determining the approach of Santa Ana's which itself is probably worth the price of the book
