5 comments about Rand McNally Road Atlas Deluxe: United States, Canada, Mexico, 1999 (Spiral).
- this book should be on the Top 10 list. i keep it on my coffee table to read when wrestling is not on. no matter how many times you read it you can always find something you missed. i havent been able to determine if it is fiction or non-fiction because i do not have a car but when i finally when the lottery i'll hook my home up to a new Chevy and see the country. NOTE: do not read after a hit of acid
- This atlas is just too big and unwieldy. I can't figure out where to put it in my little Mazda. Right now, it's taking up a whole passenger space in the back seat.
- I found this atlas to be extremely helpful. The maps and index are easy to follow. The maps are up to date, including new roads and highways that have been renamed
- This road atlas is a great tool for use on-the-road or at home while planning your trip. It is large enough to read without eye strain and ring binding flips from state to state without any problem. It is larger than most would normally have in a car, but I found it fits nicely between seat and console.
Overall, its a great tool for travel.
- I love maps. I love maps, and I love travelling, and these dual interests brought me to this.
Rand McNally.
1998.
Yeah!
Seven years have gone by since this map was current, yet I can't bring myself to get a new one. When I was nineteen years old I was living in Alaska, and someone gave this to me when I was about to begin a lengthy hitchhike all over that state and then down through Canada and into the Lower Forty-eight.
I've sat with this book on windy corners in Alaskan autumns, shivering, hoping to move the nearest town closer to me with my mind on the page.
I've felt despair as I looked at the map of Canada and saw how far I still had to travel.
I've followed its directions to as far north as the roads would go (Inuvik, in the Northwest Territories), followed it East, and back West, and all around. I've annotated it with hippy scrawls, highlighted a thousand routes both taken and planned, and folded it in half to tuck it into my backpack more times than I could ever count.
I've used it for years, alone, with friends, with my wife, and I'll use it again. I highly recommend this--it's easy to use, complete enough, and priceless to me--though I hate that Alaska's a bigger state yet gets the same amount of space as Rhode Island.

2 comments about The Moonshine Mule: A 2,700-Mile Walk from Mexico to Manhattan (Explorers Club Book).
- Ordinarily I like stories of adventures, but this one was diverted by including an extensive history of the South. As an adventure story, it was pretty dull.
- This book is a gem. A pacy, informative and at times, hilarious read. It delves into many aspects of American history, from the Civil War to 9/11. It also offers an engrossing view of the South, without pandering to the stereotypes. Browny the mule is a splendid travelling companion and she and the author get to meet a huge cross section of charaters throughout their epic walk from Mexico to New York. Strongly recommended, especially if you're after something fresh and highly original.
