1 comments about Michelin THE GREEN GUIDE Mexico Guatemala Belize, 2nd (THE GREEN GUIDE).
- This is not the source for hotels and restaurants. However, no other guide does as well what Michelin sets out to do, explain the sights clearly using good color maps. The cities and sights are rated. Although one may disagree with individual ratings, they do give the reader a good idea of what sights are considered the most important.

1 comments about Final Destinations: A Travel Guide for Remarkable Cemeteries in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
- This is a good reference book. It lists some different cemeteries in the Texas,New Mexico,Oklahoma and Arkansas region. Some I already knew about but lot I did not. It has some historical information along with several pictures of the actual cemeteries. Would have liked more information listed about some of the cemeteries in Oklahoma. I'm sure a book on each state and its famous or interesting cemeteries could be written. I would recommend it for people doing genealogy in this region.

1 comments about The Mexican War Correspondence of Richard Smith Elliott (American Exploration and Travel Series).
- The Mexican War Correspondence of Richard Smith Elliott, edited and annotated by Mark L. Gardner and Marc Simmons, University of Oklahoma Press, 1997, xi + 292 pgs. The book consists of what the title says it does, plus some useful material written later by Elliott but appropriately inserted by the editors. Elliott was an elected Lieutenant in the Laclede Rangers which was a unit from St. Louis and a part of the Missouri Volunteers, in turn a part of Kearny1s Army of the West during the Mexican War. Irregularly, from May 1846 to July of the next year, Elliott sent dispatches back to the St. Louis Daily Reveille, writing as John Brown. In brief, Lt. Elliott with his outfit went from his home to Santa Fe, where with few exceptions, he remained throughout his term of enlistment. Compared to many other soldiers of that time, he led an easy life. (After all, many of us pay to live in Santa Fe, although arguably the amenities may be somewhat better than they were 150 years ago.) However, Elliott's descriptions of the marches, Bent's Fort, Santa Fe and its inhabitants including the native ladies, are most interesting, as are his opinions of some of his associates and high-ranking commanders. The Introduction is helpful and the notes, we think, are the main achievement of the editors: erudite, expansive as need be, and interesting on their own ‹ as you might expect from those two well-known historians. Notes are what turns diaries or dispatches into histories; in this case a valuable piece of New Mexico history and an excellent view of a minuscule part of the Mexican War.

1 comments about Sea of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research.
- A marvelous insight into John Steinbeck and his mentor/pal, Ed Ricketts ("Doc" of Cannery Row fame.). Their obvious affection and respect for the other threads throughout the text. Contains wonderful lines such as," ...in six weeks in Baja, we collected about 3000 specimens of beer.", and of course there is the Hansen Sea Cow.
Their musings about a world going crazy (Hitler is on the rise in Europe during the time of the voyage) are superb.
The science and biology at the back of the volume is just the icing on a most delectable cake.

1 comments about Los Alamos Beginning of an Era: 1943-1945.
- For all interested in the beginnings of Los Alamos, this book is a must-read. Written, as it were, by the Los Alamos staff, the details are not as objectively presented as they would have been by an "unofficial" annotater, however one who wishes to have a fuller knowledge of the beginnings really ought to read through this book. The informatuon presented herein is not "rare" material, but presents a very nice beginning point to all interested.
