3 comments about Country Roads of New Mexico: Drives, Day Trips, and Weekend Excursions (Country Roads of).
- This small but fact-filled book explores the richness of New Mexico beyond the Albuequerque-Santa Fe-Taos axis. The author really knows her stuff--giving equal weight to the Native American, Hispanic and Anglo influences that make New Mexico such an interesting state. It's in the car beside me every time I head there.
- My family and I planned a trip last summer (2000) using this book. Our original plan was to spend most of our time in Santa Fe and Taos. After we read this book, however, we found several far more interesting trips that cost us about half what it would have cost in Santa Fe. Sure, we did a night in Santa Fe and Taos, but this book showed us the hidden spots in town that really were known only to locals. This book is so good that we even had a wonderful time in Farmington! Yes, that's right, Farmington. In fact, we plan to return their and once again enjoy the hidden restaurants and trading posts in which we found some of the most unique indian jewelry ever (and at about 1/3 of Santa Fe prices). Kudos to Ms. Moore! I just wish I could talk her into writing a similar book about Wisconsin.
- This is a nice book. It is well written.
The chapters are devided into areas of New Mexico. In each chapter there is a little bit about the history of that area, places to visit and more information about other nearby areas. Having been to many of the areas that are discussed in this book, I found the description on target and the suggestions of places to visit good. I particularly liked the history of the area with directions to see some of the historical spots in each area. Very nice. Well worth the money. This book will join me in the car as we go on our trips. It will join the RoadSide History of New Mexico as one of our invaluable, must keep in the car resources. Enjoy.

5 comments about Chiapas: The End of Silence / El fin del silencio.
- Antonio Turok prints in black and white all the shades of grey that he has seen in the last 25 years in Chiapas. A brilliamt photographer, madly funny with a wide eyed fasination with Maya culture and an unblinking witness to political tradgedies, this book will give you the clearest vision of Chiapas behind the news.
- A marvelous visual "walk" through contemporary Chiapas. Antonio Turok's sentiments are palpable in his pictures. A 'must-have' book for those interested in modern Mexico and, particularly, Chiapas.

- I went to school with Tony. He was never without his camera throughout high school. He is able to capture the "moment" through his photographs in this book. He is a truly gifted artist.
- The photographs in this book work as both documentary on the state of the Maya in Chiapas and as pieces of art. Turok's visions are sensitive and understanding. One gets a sense of both place and people.

1 comments about New Mexico's Historic Places: The Guide to National & State Registers Sites (Adventure Roads Series).
- For the past nine years, my husband and I have driven from Southern California to and sometimes throgh New Mexico to visit his folks for the holidays. This year we had the pleasure of driving through some of the pueblos around Albuquerque. However, for whatever reason, some of the historical landmark signs were illegible. Not to be outdone, we stopped at the Flagstaff, Arizona library to see if there was a guidebook available which would contain this information. After searching the holdings, the very helpful librarian tried Amazon.com and lo and behold, found the first and only book of it type was just published this year. Considering that, as the book points out, people have lived in New Mexico for more than 12,000 years, it is interesting that it has taken this long. This book is a comphrensive listing of over 1700 New Mexican registrar sites made more accessible for the first time. Previously, one had to go to the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division in Santa Fe to obtain this information. It is a remarkable achievement. However, I can't help but compare it to two other state historic place guides which we have enjoyed, CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL LANDMARKS (1990, 11th edition) published by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and ROADSIDE HISTORY OF ARIZONA (1986) by Marshall Trimble which we found in a used bookstore several years ago. Each guide has a slightly different organization. NEW MEXICO'S HISTORIC PLACES divides the state into six regions and then lists the national and state register sites alphabetically by town or city without a map of towns or cities in each county. Although the sites are listed alphabetically in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, that does not seen to be the case for all cities. The editor, Marci Riskin lists nine steps on "How to Use This Guidebook." That about seven steps too many on a road trip. CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL LANDMARKS is organized alphabetically by county preceeded by a map of the cities and highways in that county. Within each county, the landmarks are listed numerically by date of registration. Trimble, on the other hand, divides Arizona into five areas with a map of cities and subheadings according to highways. This format, of course, is the easiest to read on a road trip. So, unless you are very familiar with the geography of New Mexico, make sure you have an OFFICIAL HIGHWAY MAP OF NEW MEXICO issued by the New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department and the New Mexico Department of Tourism. Perhaps the next edition of NEW MEXICO'S HISTORIC PLACES will be a bit more user friendly, dividing each region by county, with town, city and highway maps, and also providing historic walking tour maps(or where to find them).

5 comments about Choose Mexico for Retirement, 9th: Information for Travel, Retirement, Investment, and Affordable Living (Choose Retirement Series).
- This is a good book in that it addresses some of the basics of planning to move to Mexico. What it does not address is specifics such as,
1. How do you get your water and gas?
2. What should you look for in renting a house in Mexico?
3. Is there a Mexican price and is there a Gringo price for things?
4. What about learning Spanish?
In the majority of the places this book lists for expatriation you will find large gringo communitites that are isolated from the culture of Mexico with their gated communities, their own American stores, movie theaters, etc... Choose Mexico does not cover these facts. The reason for this is that the majority of gringos in these colonies do not learn Spanish. Without learning the language you cannot very well have a life in geniune Mexico.

The Plain Truth about Living in Mexico
- Nicely organized and full of information, this is a great resource for anyone thinking of moving to Mexico. As much as anything, I learned what questions I should be asking, and what I need to consider before making a final decision. Different locations are compared in a meaningful way, so that I actually zeroed in on my tentative location (Sayulita, which I had never even heard of before) with the help of this book.
Important up-to-date information on Mexican laws regarding land ownership and vehicle insurance are critical and this book can save anyone a lot of money and inconvenience. Don't buy or rent a house in Mexico without reading this book.
- Modern retirees who want to get the most out of shrinking retirement benefits will want to look at CHOOSE MEXICO FOR RETIREMENT, appearing in its 9th updated edition to provide the latest facts on local real estate, costs, medical care, business opportunities and more. From Baja California to the Yucatan Peninsula, discussions revolve around cultural and economic considerations alike and also include first-person insights on development and direction. An excellent primer for assessing Mexico's pros and cons.

- It was this very book that gave my husband and I the information we needed to start bringing our dreams of retiring in Mexico to reality.
There were so many good tips in there. We found our piece of the baja outside San Felipe in Baja Norte, and started a site called [....]
Thanks to this wonderful author who has helped us realize our dreams of living and retiring in Mexico.
- This book is filled with useful and interesting information on retiring south of the border. I recommend it as a starting point, if you are considering retiring there.

5 comments about Caribbean for Dummies.
- This book is great. It has so much information about the caribbean. These Garrett folks are hilarious. They seem to put their heart into this book and I appreciate it. There is a lot of info for couples looking for romantic spots and for families with kids. This rocks!
- The review says that the book includes information on St. Lucia and St. Maarten/St. Martin. It does not. It totally ignores most of the smaller islands of the Caribbean. I realize that they could not fit an in-depth analysis of all the Caribbean islands into one book, but to totally ignore the vast majority of islands makes this book incomplete and disappointing.
- Oh dear, oh dear. This is the Caribbean from a Dummy. There is far more to it than this horribly limited selection of islands.
Aruba is in, but not Bonaire or Curacao. Nor St Maarten to round off the Netherlands and Dutch Antilles, plus its French half St Martin. Grand Cayman yes - Cayman Brac and Little Cayman? These beauties are a short hop away for the discerning traveler. Jamaica is in, but not Cuba. Puerto Rico is there but not the Dominican Republic or the Spanish Virgin Islands. In better times Haiti can be an attractive destination. BVI and USVI are there. No sign of Anguilla. Further down the great chain of the East Caribbean islands all we see is Barbados (which is stuck out in the Atlantic anyway and does not count itself as East Caribbean). These islands are almost all popular holiday destinations for land or cruise travelers. St Kitts and Nevis (laid back), Antigua and Barbuda (365 beaches), the French islands Guadeloupe and Martinique (incomparable cooking and rum), Dominica (the only true rain forest in the Caribbean), St Lucia (spectacular), St Vincent and the Grenadines (sailing as good as BVI), Grenada (an under-appreciated gem with beaches every bit as good as Grand Cayman), Trinidad and Tobago (restful Tobago). No to mention a few islands like St Eustatius and Saba in the north, plus volcanic Montserrat for at least for a day trip from Antigua. Anyone who relied on this book for a true view of the Caribbean really would be a Dummy. There is not one country in here that uses the East Caribbean dollar. PS I live and work in the Caribbean. I have lived on four islands, visited thirty-six at the last count, and I am still delighted and amazed to find wonders round every corner.
- the book was informative but it left out several interesting islands. the book only covered 11 islands & i know there is more than that. for a first time visitor to the caribbean you need information on all the islands so you can choose which one is best for YOU!!! As i said okay book but fodors or frommers is a much better choice.
- Great book at fraction of original price. Really helped me out on my trip. Very informative.
