1 comments about Avelinda: The Legacy of a Yankee Yachtsman.
- For anyone who as ever set sail around the islands of Maine, this book is a must. Having sat on Thomas Cabot's granite bench on Butter Island, I feel like I knew him. This book shares many great stories of exploring the coast of Maine and some of his family history.
His summer home on Swans Island truly is a beautiful spot..... hard wood trees and all.

- i believe this book to be very useful. it not only gives you a variety of accomodations but many price ranges as well. the list of attractions is always accurate and explained very well. i recommend this book to anyone traveling anywhere! i have also used this good for Europe and it was fabulous. dates and times that sights were open was very accurate which made planning my trip very easy.
- Good source of information, but...has absolutely no photos! It's pretty hard to want to travel somewhere when you have no idea what the place looks like. Still, while traveling this book is quite useful.

1 comments about Discovering Elizabethan London: Diary and Sketches.
- This is SUCH a beautiful book. I actually bought my copy at the Globe Theater in London. I have written several novels set in Elizabethan London, and have many times haunted the old churches of the city, that is, the old city which was within the walls. Mrs. Thomson has sketched so many of them, each accompanied by a diary entry of doing it...how a verger brought her a cup of tea, how someone xeroxed a drawing for the organist, if the day was rainy or hot, or the street crowded, or if she found the very same bird in a church garden she had previously recalled. The drawings are also inset with a few lines about the church from the great Elizabethan city enthusiast John Stow, whose memorial is in St. Andrew Undershaft. It is one of my most precious, personal books: some other person than I wandered to these churches and gardens, some many hundred years old, and found and took away something personal. I tried to get in touch with the artist to tell her how much I loved it, but did not succeed. The drawings are exquisite. I am going back there again with her book in hand. Thank you, Mrs. Thomson. I hope these words reach you and many others!

1 comments about Ike Glidden In Maine: A Story Of Rural Life In A Yankee District.
- I read this book because sometimes it's fun to jump into and old book (1902). I guess I was curious to see what people were reading at the turn of the last century. Also, I was interested in what life was like in rural New England communities in days of yore. This tale is a bit of a Horatio Alger story. He starts in Vermont on the old farm and moves to Providence eventually then Maine then Ike dissappears and what happens to him? Well, I wouldn't want to ruin it for you...
The fun part was the language used by the author. It really wasn't easy to read until you got the hang of it. Mr McFaul really did a great job with the Yankee and Irish immigrant vernacular. Never read anything quite like it before really. And frankly it's not always easy to understand what people are saying but you usually get the gist most of the time.
The tale itself has been told over and over, so i gave it 4 stars but the language was well worth it. I managed to read it pretty quickly, so it held my attention. I recommend it if you are interested in this time period and or this region. I guess I thought it was going to be funnier too. The beginning is pretty funny, but then it has a more earnest tone as it goes along. I enjoyed it though.
