  1. My family and I recently visited Maine and in preparation we purchased Great Destinations The Coast of Maine Book to get an idea of what we wanted to see. I found this book to be very clear and concise. It was extremely helpful in giving us an overview of what we wanted to see and do whilst in Maine. The coastline was as beautiful as the book depicted and I would recommend buying this book and also visiting this tremendous State.

  2. The Coast of Maine book is good if you're a first-time visitor to the state. I recently bought this before going to Maine for a week and found this book very helpful. If you're going to be driving a fair amount, then you'll like this...it provides information about the interesting things to do in the major coastal towns and areas in between. This book is lacking in a couple of areas, however. First, the hotel and restaurants listed are few in number and don't provide the best selection, although it is a start. Second, the maps aren't very helpful if you're going to do a lot of driving and provide only a relative idea of your location. I would recommend getting a AAA map of Maine to accompany this book.

That said, this is still a very useful book. Most of the other books on Maine were too focused (e.g., only lodging, or only lighthouses, etc.). This one at least gives a good overview and identifies both the common and less well-known things to do.

  1. I've read Peter Genovese's other two books and have to say this is by far the best. Great stories, great photos, excellent writing. I grew up in a town right on Route 1 in New Jersey, and have traveled some of the sections in a few other states. This book makes you see the road in a whole new light. My husband and I have driven Route 66 all the way and we were looking for another "road trip" to take. I think this book will be the "travel guide" for that trip. I loved it! I can't wait for his next book!

  2. If you love american history by a great writer, PICK THiS BOOK UP! It is amazing, and he is a true american writer! Great pictures, great stories, you will never put the book down. Dont mind that I am his nephew, im really not that biased!

  1. I had trouble putting this book down. I only did to make it last longer.
Celia totally loved her garden. She wrote about the flowers she planted, the birds who came to visit, and her battle with slugs. How I pulled for her to defeat those slugs!
This book had me itching to work in my own garden. I plan to read it every spring.
If you find it interesting reading about other people's exploits with their own gardens then you should enjoy this delightful book.

  2. Well written. had to keep reminding myself this was written in the 1800's. Good overview of the islands and reflections of life in those times.

  3. This book was another visit to a previous century, and I loved reading it. Very poetic and also interesting to read someone's observations of their world, and compare it to how we live today!

  1. I grew up on the coast of Maine; sailing on the schooners all summer. Peter Spectre's writing captures the feeling of sailing on a schooner perfectly, and Benjamin Mendlowitz's photographs are simply the best.

This book is a work of fiction about a passenger who goes sailing on a schooner for a week. The schooner leaves the dock Monday and gets back in on Saturday. It anchors every night and sails all day long. In the course of the week all the other schooners are seen and many fun adventures are had by the passenger.

This book is modeled closely after a real week on the schooner Heritage, though it doesn't say so explicitly in the book. If you're interested by this book I suggest you look at going sailing on a real schooner.

  1. A good book which largely delivers what it promises. However, it is best used in conjunction with a more comprehensive map and/or guide, if you're visiting a particular region. Give it 4.5 stars.

Good Points: 1) The author points out "kid-friendly" features on hikes and gives good descriptions. 2) Most of the hikes have pretty good thumbnail maps

Drawbacks: 1) Introductory map could be better (more detailed) to help reader find trails 2) Some hikes lack thumbnail maps. Why? 3) Abilities of children vary wildly. We found that a "moderate" hike can be strenuous for an inexperienced or out-of-shape child (or adult, for that matter).
